Subject: turf on a WH40k board?

Hey y'all I was wondering about whether using artificial turf on a warhammer board would work. I think it would be pretty cool looking. The only issue wold be the grass being to tall an there for not very proportionate (I could fix this with a little chopping). Here is the turf I was looking at :http://www.homedepot.com/p/Green-6-ft-x-8-ft-Artificial-Grass-Rug-T85-9000-6X8-BM/202274592 I would cut it up and then apply it onto my board. What do you guys think?

It'd be a nightmare to put terrain on and figures would fall over a lot if you didn't have very very short cut material.
I'd have to see it in person, but I don't think it's a great idea.

Static grass or flock are the typical ways of doing small scale grass. Static grass, if you lay down some pva and drop clumps of it, it'll somewhat tend to stand up like grass (somewhat). If you want it to stand up perfectly you can make or buy yourself an applicator like this... http://playingtheodds.com.au/static-grass-applicator-type-2/ But I find if you apply it in big clumps it tends to stand up anyway (obviously not perfectly, but enough for it to look realistic to my eye). Especially if you can position your board so that after you've applied it you can tap the back to knock off the excess, it tends to coax the grass that stays attached in to an upright position. There some videos online on applying static grass in ways to make it look realistic, like this one... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uj1q1hK-9qk EDIT: Also look for brands like Woodland Scenics rather than GW brand. Hobby stores that sell model trains tend to have a very wide range of terrain products that are far cheaper in bulk than wargaming stores tend to carry. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLyo9epuqqA

If you've got any old towels lying around, they make a great surface; soft and level enough that figures and terrain are secure:
There's some more info on how I built the board on Death of a Rubricist, here.
If you want to use more commercially available bits to save time, then I'd suggest looking for green flock wallpaper or matting ( here's a US ebay search to get you started), which will be low enough to work with miniatures and terrain.

A quick google for 'grass effect sheeting' yields a few railway modelling products that are, basically, microscale astroturf type things.
Static Grass mats is the product,
this is one on ebay

I've never really liked the look of static grass mats, I think you want a bit more variation in colour to make it look natural.
But I suppose they're a good option if you don't have space for rigid boards.

the towel idea is genius! I have never thought about that! did you just spray them with varying 'grassy' colors? that looks really nice. I am making a modular board do you think it would work as well with that? Automatically Appended Next Post: nvm just looked at your again and it looks as though yours is modular.

To paint it, I just used watered-down tester pots of various yellow and green house paint (the towels were yellow and green in the first place, too). Keep the paint nice and fluid so it soaks in - if it's neat, it might end up a bit brittle.
As you say, modularity is entirely possible in fact, if you leave the 'loose' edges ragged, you can drape the towelling over to mask the join.
It's also worth noting that you can build in the edge of the towels to suggest field/meadow boundaries to create nice natural footpaths/roads. Dead easy, dead cheap!
