That is probably exclusive to perishables like toothpaste and soaps. No way GW is so dumb that they would release a product that is illegal.

Tiny little beads of plastic, usually less than 5mm small added to personal care products to aid exfoliation. Basically they take 100 years plus to biodegrade and are attributed with widespread pollution of the sea and local waterways. They are believed to have entered the food chain. A number of US states have already banned them and I believe the US plans to phase them out by mid 2017. The UK looks set to follow, as the poster above says the ban applies to cosmetics and personal care products.

Isn't the reason microbeads are banned because they pollute the environment? You wouldn't flush this down the drain so I don't see it as a problem.

Again though, so far they've only really been banned from cosmetics and cleaning products by various countries, not in general. It shouldn't really be a massive problem as long as you're careful enough to remove any excess beads from your brushes before you wash them.

What about the water you used to rinse the brush in (the fact that it can be used with a brush is listed as a plus.)
It's not going to be a lot, but I dare say each use of toothpaste with microbeads isn't a lot individually either.
I won't be using it, mostly because I have about a gajillion different basing options already, but the microbeads would give me pause as well.

I read it as the ruins are printed on the mat. Either way I'm interested. Its about the same price as a mat of the same size from other companies(in the UK anyway), and the board sections on the recent boxed games from GW have all impressed me so far with there artwork.

If that is all there is, then no money for GW for this. Not when FAT Mats exist among other things.

I'm optimistic about my painting, but I know I'm going to strip some of my minis some of the time. And that'll get into the environment when I rinse the mins while stripping them.
I'm not worried about sand or cured greenstuff getting into the water because they aren't acting on that micro level to mess things up.

any of us worrying about microbeads better not sand, scrape or file plastic minis as we'll be creating a bunch of them when we do
the amount we are going to release via texture basing paint is going to be small by comparision

Sorry, but plastic dust/shavings are not the same thing as microbeads. Not that they aren't also harmful/hazardous when introduced as waste, but the issue with microbeads has to do with the fact that they are typically included in things that get washed down the drain, like soap or paint. When you wash out your brush in your water cup with some texture paint on there, it might not have a lot of texture beads left, but it's still some, and when you're done painting for the day you're going to dump that cup down the drain. Everyone says they aren't contributing much, which per person they are not, but these things add up and then you end up where we are now.

Yup. Worrying about microbeads in texture paint is perhaps one of the finest examples of that tendency people have to get really concerned about the environment only in cases where doing so doesn't actually inconvenience them that much.
Plastic microparticles in the ocean entering the food chain has been a concern since the 80's, if you're only starting to give a hoot about it now because of the cosmetics microbead ban then you've probably been happily contributing to the problem for years at levels that make folk washing their face with gimmicky plastic-laced goop seem pretty irrelevant by comparison, nevermind the tiny amount that will enter the water via these new paints.

And to that I say using the internet right now is using up hydro. You are contributing much more surfing the net than just washing your brush. Now you are buying plastic crack. You are even contributing even more pollution now because trucks, boats, airplanes using up petro/gasoline causing more pollution for those products to travel.
And you are worried about little beads? So if we stop the beads, are we going to stop buying plastic crack? Stop using the internet and hydro and driving and what ever else? I just find it funny some people are making an issue of these small beads but are doing a lot more worse buy doing other things like protesting the use of these beads on this very forum.
Reminds me of the movie Armageddon. The protesters renting out a boat that spews out so much petro/oil out and doing more harm while they are protesting.

Another factor is the size of the microbeads. Those used in the Texture paints are going to be much larger than those used in the hygiene products which are causing the problems, with the larger microbeads less likely to slip through the filtration systems at the sewage treatment plants.

That would be surprising. Other makers are selling 4x4 mousepad mats for 40-45£ with no extras. That would be a significant deal of GW is selling one for 50£ with ruins (assuming they are plastic and not cardboard).

Got the new issue today. It's good. No pics of the mat though. The new format 40k battle report is very very nice. So is the Chapter Approved-like GSC article.
It could contain more rules for my taste though. There is only one rules expansion, the 40k mission 'The Hunter, Hunted', which the battle report is based on, 2 pages of rules.
It seems to allow for some interesting Hive-based fights and comes with special rules like 'Shooting from above' which gives re-roll of 1s (to hit) if the shooter is at least 3" higher - and the target will get -1 to its cover save.
