So whats the best all around weapon to use in a tac squad? From what i understand plasma cannon and ML are off the table because you cant snap fire them.

So what are we looking at then? HB, Gravcannon, Las, MM?

and if so, what the best way to get ahold of said heavy weapon.

To many unpainted models to count.

IMO, Grav Cannon or MM. But depends on the rest of your list.

Grav Cannon is the only one that works with how Tactical Marines work: it does something on the move.

I think the Dev box is theonly way to get them. Maybe FW, not sure. That or a 3rd party manufacturer that makes something counts-as.

You can snap fire MLs. Just the krack missiles though. Not that you should ever be shooting frags, but that’s a different rant.

I think there is a place for almost every heavy weapon on tac squads.

Grav cannons shoot well on the move, which fits the tac’s role well. Crazy expensive though. Although the things they like to wound tend to be pricy themselves, so it works out.

MMs work in full melta squads. The turn after you hop out of your transport, you can sit still and there is still probably a tank in range.

HBs cost peanuts, and like the shoot the same things the squad’s bolters do. They look cool as an added plus. Not doing anything extra special though.

LCs are OKish. Expensive, but nice stats. Single shot AV is not all that in today’s game, and they have little to no synergy with any of the specials.

PCs can’t snap fire, small blasts are not great, they they are expensive for a gun you are almost never going to get to shoot. I could see a full plasma squad to camp in previous editions, but these days take the grav.

MLs are mediocre at everything. Iconic though, and handed out with every tac squad since the dawn of time. Pure inertia keeps me including them in my lists.

Alright, i was thinking of Grav but they are VERY expensive, MM do sound like another solid choice that i cant really go wrong with.

The best should be Grav cannon. Nothing need to say about this so called "OP" stuff.
The second I think is heavy bolter, cheap and 3 shots to mitigate the snap shot on the move problem, but they also in line with the bolters in both preferred target and the range.

In such sense, what followed is Missile Launcher, plasma cannon and Multi Melta, and Lascannon.

Cough up the 35 for the grav cannon. It's stupid good, and is the only weapon that remotely models what the marines are supposed to be able to do.

New Dev box is the only way from GW. However, Kromlech sells sets of 3 for a good price which look very similiar to the original.

The sites are down right now apparently so you'll have to wait before you can access it.

Site may be down, but (and I never thought I'd say this) their Facebook page is thankfully up.

Heavy bolters also work (for imperial fists) with bolter drill, which helps a lot with snap firing the things.
The Kromlech weapons look pretty good.

Sorry for misleading the OP's thread but what about the best and worst "light"/special weapon?

Personally for how you will use most tactical squads a grav cannon is too expensive. I am a fan of melta/multimelta just because it keeps them cheap and fills a need in many lists.

Without something to give them relentless grav cannons are meh, if you move you have less range, including move, than if you sat still.

Playing Imperial Fists in a Sternhammer, a snap firing TL HB isn't a totally bad choice.
And if you stay still it adds quite nicely to the anti-infantry firepower of the squad.

Same as with the Heavy, they all have their place.

Flamer - It’s like an auto-hit bolter with a number of shots equal to what you can catch under the template. So it helps the squad against the things it wants to be shooting. But doesn’t bring anything new to the squad. Well, a little ignore cover and wall of death. So a few nice perks.

Melta - Tac squads are going to be downfield anyway, and you can always use more AV these days. Be sure to pair with a combi on the sarge. One melta shot is not going to reliably pop a tank, but a full melta squad, particularly with some sort of buff, can make it worthwhile for the bolter guys to take 5 while the AV guns do the work.

Grav and Plasma - These two do basically the same thing for the same cost. They let the squad try to take down harder targets. Optimally mid-T, good save. That way the bolters can try to drown them in wound spam while the specials get more guaranteed wounds. Plasma on tac squads is one of the few places it compares well to grav, which is generally superior. It has better range and functions better while moving, which tac squads often do. Also when shooting soft targets, it still functions just as well, while grav is not as good.

Grav cannon in a Rhino or melta/combi-melta in Drop Pod.
