I recently started playing 40k, and I am rolling downhill with it. I love it!!!! I am new, as I said, and I would like to increase my knowledge and skills. I am looking for tips on what I should do (add units, remove units, change weapons, etc)
to have a better army.. This is what I have right now.... and obviously I wont be using all HQ's and whatever in a single game.... duh!

Please let me know what you think I should do to increase my army's potential.... I'm considering another Stormtalon Gunship and Stormraven Gunship for a formation

You won't be using Pedro and Tiggy in the same army, so which Chapter Tactics do you prefer to use?

Salamanders or Ultramarines I would have to say... Its just my friend and I playing, so we kind of bend the rules a little bit. We know we can mix certain units, but we do anyways lol (house rules right)

My play style from what I'm understanding is very Space Marine-like..... I believe being versatile in anything (not just tabletop games and war)... One day I may want an air army, next I may want just soldiers... One day I may focus on heavy weapons, next would be light.... If that makes sense.

My one question though is this... Why cant I use Pedro and Chief? They are in the same codex, just a couple heroes down from each other

Look at the Chapter Tactics section of each model's datasheet.
You can only have one CT per detachment (or whatever), and these are locked to using a particular one. Most named characters have this., and it forces them to be part of the detachment with the same CT, and cannot mix. Pedro is CT(Fists), and Tiggy is CT(Ultras).
Neither can be used in a Salamanders force, and Tigarius can be part of an Ultramarine force. This applies to successor chapters IIRC, as there are only so many CTs to choose from.

House rules though, and Unbound.
Or, take a second detachment from the other chapter, as they will count as allied Battle Brothers.

But, see if anyone corrects me on any of this, as it has been a while since I used them.

Oh, and don't be worried if this thread gets moved to a different area of Dakka. This is the 'Saying Hi' part, and this is getting a bit 'Army List building'-y

Hello and welcome!! If you're truly just looking for versatility, theres a few things I'd beef up. You might consider another tactical squad, they aren't sexy, but can be so helpful. I'd also consider a Vindicator or Predator. I haven't tried Centurions yet, but they look pretty cool. Drop pods would give you more deployment options. More fast attack would make you more versatile too, another unit of bikes, assault marines, or even some land speeders. Chaplains are neat, but personally I'd rather run a second librarian. That's an awesome starting force though!!

I appreciate everything you guys have said. I have many plans which include getting a whirlwind, another stormtalon AND stormraven, Vindicator is on my list... Another tactical squad was definately going to be the next purchase, along with either - 5 more scouts (10 total) ([i]Crazy I know... but imagine the more possibilities with targeted hits and headshots... and bringing them against my homeboywould just cripple him) another devastator squad, or do it big and get my command squad with the apothecary and company champion... anyways...
I am pretty strategic on the tabletop, regardless who I field.. I enjoy playing 1500-2000 point range (2k is pushing it this second with what I have, without overspending), and maybe its the competitive side of me saying this, but I believe I can compete with the best of the 40k players, even though I have just recently started..

I guess thats a ramble? lol idk.... But yea, I'm definitely trying to find some more people to play against, whether it be at a Tabletop location, or just at home enjoying some beer and shooting each other in the face - #manlaw

Im also fixing to buy my fiance an Imperial Guard army so we can get some 2v2 games going, and so I can switch up the flavor myself in solo's.. Thanks again all you guys

Hey, if you get a chance, check out the Thunderfire Cannon too. Its a pretty interesting unit if you're considering a whirlwind.

Based on the 2 main HQ you have you can choose go for Crimson Fists or Ultramarines Chapter. Both Pedro and Tigarius are HQ choices.

However, If you wan't to choose them both - one will enter with bunch of marines as allied detachment. Then everyone will benefit from the chosen Warlord and the traits of the other HQ cannot be used.

My advise is to look up for some diversity in your army. Whirlwinds and T. Fire canons are killers against mass infantry, but won't help much versus super heavy and etc.
