Any other Dakkanauts in the zone, keep your powder dry and watch your asses. Time to go finish securing loose crap in the yard, so I don't have to worry about it if (or when) it comes our turn to deal with Matthew.

Might want to edit the title to "Hurricane Matthew" or something, because Matthew is almost done with Haiti.
That aside...QFT

Now forecasts are showing it following along the Coast of the Eastern US, just offshore enough not to diminish quickly but close enough to hit the coast with full Cat 3 / 4 wind speeds. Thats a five hundred mile wrecking ball.

Impacting in just a few hours. Center effectively on the coastline about 8.00AM per NOAA.

About 40 miles from impact point. I was out cutting oak limbs near the house and pulling my fire pile apart and dispersing it amoungst palm stands so the wind doesnt catch it and turn it into projectiles. I am expecting to be without power for several days although I do have a generator. We are expecting about 8 inches of rain and 100mph wind here. Time for the Hurricane Party. Done about all I could do to prep for it.
If you dont short hand your list, Im not reading it.
Example: Assault Intercessors- x5 -Thunder hammer and plasma pistol on sgt.

Not sure if this will be a Cat 4 or Cat 5. The local weatherman Tom Terry is going nuts. The roads in Orange County close at 5pm this evening. Winds should start picking up at 8PM tonight and let up tomorrow just before 5PM. There will be a 6 hour window of wind exceeding 100+ mph in Orlando (9AM - 3PM) so this will be a slow moving storm.
My parents live on a barrier island in Brevard and have elected to ride this one out. Usually I wouldn't worry but all projections show the eye of the storm moving through the entire Space Coast.

My son lives in Jacksonville just about one block away from the St Johns river.
He has said that he is going to ride it out as well. I countered with '9 foot storm surge.'
He is still staying.

A bit over the top for normal weather, I think. I mean yes hurricanes are bad but this is just more of the same that the east cost as withstood just fine before. It's not like the weather could have somehow gotten more extreme in the last century, or anything.
Most of Florida is slightly above sea level. Merritt Island is expected to get a 7 - 13' storm surge and they are in between the mainland and the beach. Cape Canaveral and Cocoa are expected to get 13 - 20'+. New Smyrna and Daytona Beach are expecting roughly the same storm surge. If you live near the Banana or Indian Rivers, you're going to have flooding. In East Orlando, they believe 2 million plus will be without power by tonight. As my neighborhood's power lines are buried, I'm hoping we aren't one of the people who lose power. No tornados yet so that is a plus. The news is getting better - they are talking about the 'double eye wall' so the wind field has expanded and we will get the winds much earlier.
If anyone is looking for a movie to watch in honor of our predicament, please watch the Sharknado series. One of them is filmed in Central Florida because my brother was an extra.
Automatically Appended Next Post: The storm turned east and the eye is not going to make land fall. That means the storm surge will not be too bad and the winds will not be as high. Orlando is slated to get sustained winds of 70-80 mph. If the storm continues to move east, then it will be much less.

We did not lose power. Hell, we barely got any rain. Wind is breezy but nothing extreme. I caused more of a mess yesterday cutting some oak limbs than this storm caused. Two of my fruit trees went down, so when the wind stops I will have to stake them back up.

Keep cool Dash, the storm looks like it may bobble about a bit. Good to hear though.

Editor's Note: This post has been updated at 8:01 a.m. ET following a tweet from Waffle House indicating that several locations have been closed.
There are a bunch of unusual ways you can track what's happening in the economy.
And one of the more popular informal measures is the so-called "The Waffle House Index" — an indicator that is actually unofficially used by FEMA.
Here's the gist of it: Waffle House restaurants notoriously stay open during natural disasters. So if the diner closes during an event, that suggests it was a really bad natural disaster with devastating effects on the economy. And on the flip side, if it stays open and serving a full menu, damage was relatively limited.
As a historical reference point: after 2011's Hurricane Irene, 22 Waffle Houses lost power in North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware. Only one wasn't open by the Wednesday after the storm passed through — a particularly hard hit location in coastal Virginia.
"If you get [to a place where a disaster hit] and the Waffle House is closed? That's really bad," said FEMA administrator Craig Fugate back in 2011.
As of Friday, 8:01 a.m. ET, Waffle House's official twitter account tweeted that 25 restaurants had been closed across Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina amid Hurrice Matthew.
Waffle House had been planning to stay open during the height of the hurricane, which was expected to hit Florida as a Category 4 hurricane. Florida Gov. Rick Scott issued a statement on Thursday warning residents living in evacuation zones to leave immediately or risk death because of the impending hurricane.
“We’re a 24-hour restaurant, so oddly enough shutting down is a big deal for us,” Waffle House’s Vice President of Culture Pat Warner told FoxNews.com on Thursday.
“When it comes to making the final decision, we let our operations team on the ground, like individual restaurant managers, make the final decision based on local conditions. But our job [as corporate officials] is to give them all the support they need to stay open.”
This could be a rough one. 25 Waffle Houses are closed.
It's a very unusual storm- since it didn't run into land, few areas will be utterly devastated, which is a wonderful thing. On the other hand, it maintained its full strength and fury for its entire run up the coast, so the overall area that is being damaged is absolutely massive.

Spoke with my wife's aunt last night, she had to evacuate her place on the FL coast and headed up to stay at a hotel in Orlando. She's still waiting for word on her home, but the whole town...small town...was completely evacuated and none of the neighbors are around to call and get a report on the damage.
Good news on the situation? The hotel she's staying at allowed her to bring her dog.

Id not want to be a at sea though, if its not happening the land but anyone out at sea is going to have it rough.
And there's still risk of storm surges even if it does not make land fall.
I think it was on BBC bur cape canavaral rocket site being hit by 17m waves
Guantanamo bay was evacuated much as it could be previously.
