Think they are pretty great. It does push me to get my imperial fist army started.I doubt id run them as a solo army. They wont have a ton of options, atleast not as many as a standard legion. Makes more sense to me to have them as tag alongs/muscle of a existing legion when I play with em.
I have 3 sets so my plan is to make 5 and 5, then possibly 2 standards, 1 more of each then a conversion (since they have his head in the kit) for Constantin Valdor counts as. They wont have a model for him for a long long time
I only hope the rules for the standard bearer is he can have a sword and not stuck with a dagger

They may not get as many unit options as a Legion Army, but they could be a very small, elite army with a lot of very good toys that if you like the play style they represent, could be a very effective army on the table. Legions have what, six different Dreadnoughts, and all you ever see are Contemptors. What does that say about the other five types of Dreads? How about troops- Legion Tactical Squads, Support Squads, Assault Squads, Breacher Squads, Reconnaissance Squads... unless a Rite of War or a specific Legion says otherwise, it's always the Tactical Squad used for the Troops choice in the Force Organization. What about tanks? OMG, how many different tank units are available to a Legion, but which ones do we always see again and again? Choice is not always better nor means quality. What does it matter if you can fill a role with 4 different choices of units if you always take the best one? Might as well only have one choice then, eh? That's what the Custodians will probably be- one HQ, a couple elites, one troop, one FA, and a couple Heavies, and one or two dedicated transports. There would be nothing stopping you from using them as an allied force alongside your regular force.
I think your plan is a solid one if you want to get these guys on the table ASAP, or you could wait until probably Dec or Jan when HH:Book VII Inferno comes out. I expect that announcement this weekend.
Standards have always been an additional piece of wargear, typically not replacing weapons the model might have. In the Legions, only the Command Squad gets a Legion Standard. The rest of the squads get Vexcillas, which don't replace anything on the model.

Vexillas are mounted on backpacks though, the standard carried by the Custodes is a bit bigger than that.

Given we are getting a preview of Inferno in the next WD (December) and for the GS Cult release and the BoP release both times we got a preview in WD with the release the following week I am still hopeful for a December release.
Do the "OOOOOOOOOO look at this book" at the open day with preorders then release week 2 of December just in time for Xmas.
I am expecting for the custodes as a list...
HQ - Hero character, Valdor, Command squad
Elite - Terminators, sentinels
Troops - Custodes, bolter armed custodes (as per the art)
Fast - Jet Bikes
Heavy - Grav Tank with a couple of weapon variants
Transports - land raider, Spartan, grav rhino
That's about it

So, can you have a squad of a mix of shields and spears? Or can you only equip them with spears only for a squad and guardian blades in another. Basically, can you have a variety of weapons in each squad for 40k and 30k?

Spear are only for Guardian Squads and sword and shield only for Sentinel Squads.

Gods? There are no gods. Merely existences, obstacles to overcome.

The sword and board is better than storm shields in close combat, since a rerollable 4+ is better than a 3+.
But I think I prefer the spears, for both looks and fluff... hmm.

Yup, with my current lot, I'm building something along these lines:
1 standard guy (because I'm assuming we're gonna get an HQ like the herald)
1 guy unbuilt (assuming we're getting a shield captain or something)
2 9-man guardian squads
1 5-man sentinel squad
w/ at least 5 more coming in shortly
