I've always been a fan of written batreps, I can read at my own pace and I know where to go back to if I miss something. However, it seems recently that 90% or so of new batreps are in video form. I'm really not a fan of the video format to be honest, and obviously it's down to the individual which media they use, I'm just curious as to why they've become so popular recently?

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

When people ask, "What's the point in understanding everything?" they've just disqualified themselves from using questions and should disappear in a puff of paradox. But they don't understand and just continue existing, which are also their only two strategies for life.

I watch a batrep in the same way I'd watch a tv show. Most of them happen to be about the length of a tv show. I find them very entertaining depending on the army.

This, sort of. I get a better sense of how the game actually played out if I can see the board. Still like a nice written batrep though, as long as it's well written.

It took a while for me to come around, but it is now exclusively how i consume my batreps. If I'm staring at a screen, i might as well enjoy the affordances of a multimedia format.

I like writing mine on my blog. I guess because people have requested Battle Reports to "prove" my theories to them I have caved a few times and done them. This was more done just to shut someone up. Having said that, The REAL problem with them is decising on a format to do them in. I hate the way my camera shakes when I do them and i suppose to do it seriously I kind of need a better camera or stabilizing equioment or something which saps my interest in doing them further. But I have done them and i do enjoy doing them a little bit as long as I dont have to do it all the time. =)

Example, since you like them:

I dislike video batreps. Thus far, the ones I have seen have had passable camera work (not too much shakey cam, decent lighting, OK audio, etc.), but I don't find the dialogue compelling, the action seems dull, and sometimes the people who are making the video don't know the rules for their own army. Many of them are just too long.

I've done both video batreps and written batreps. I find the video batrep to be a lot easier! So, generally, I'd say laziness is the #1 reason. The video batreps I've done have been for The Basement Collective (I've played Harlequins and Genestealer Cult for the channel), but weren't done for fame of any sort, but rather to give people an impression of how these forces work. A lot of people have pointed out on the Harlequin batrep that my army was Unbound, so I shouldn't have been able to Run & Charge, but we knew this to be the case and they let me play that way anyways because Harlequins were new at the time and we wanted to showcase that ability.

For my friends I've done a HUGE amount of written batreps, but I don't tend to post them online. The reason being that I don't want to step on their toes. When it's just between our group, it's okay, but some people are very uncomfortable with being "exposed" online, and I very much respect that. It's a lot of work to do a written batrep, because there's so much visual information in the game that it's hard to condense the important points of a turn into a single paragraph.
