No, data authors do not get paid.
Subscription is completely optional.
If you have an old BS license, you can redeem it for a 1000 year subscription for the desktop version.
The changes are not visible on the surface, but, believe me, they make the app, after a rough start, so much better with things you just couldn't do before. Like Kill Team.
Since 2.0 hit I invested round about... 50 hours in updating the data files. It takes time.
Basically... dont let the door hit you on the way out.
Yeah that's totally the right way to handle paying customers who are unhappy, no way that'll backfire at all.
And yet people still stick with GW. This seems so mild compared to what GW does.

I'm a data author because I like to do it, not some customer relations guy. If you invest a significant amount of time for free for the good of others and then get hyperbolic crap for it, you'd be miffed too.
Selling an app for a single price and then providing unlimited updates forever just isn't sustainable, particularly for a small "one man show" like mine. This is especially true given that BattleScribe is updated and improved constantly, and requires ongoing work to keep it up to date with the wargaming scene.
Given the huge amount of time and effort it has taken to develop BattleScribe 2.0, it was the right time to finally release it as a new app at a new price. There is no doubt that this is a business decision, and one I have needed to make for some time. BattleScribe 2.0 has provided the opportunity and justification to go through with that decision.
Of course, the simple solution would be to release BattleScribe 2.0 as a new full-price app. But this comes with problems. People who had only recently bought the old Pro version would rightly be annoyed. Some would be concerned - correctly - that if they bought the new version of the app, it would become obsolete at some point in the future as 1.15 had before it. Other more cynical people would sling abuse and cry foul, which isn't nice to endure. Clearly, transitioning to a new app was always going to cause friction.
Releasing BattleScribe 2.0 as a new full-price app sets the precedent that future major versions (3.0, 4.0 etc) would also be sold as new full-price apps - and we would need to go through the pain of transitioning to the new app every time. This is not something I want to put you (or myself) through again in future.
The solution then, is the new Supporter Pass system. Instead of releasing new full-price apps every few years, the idea is to charge a much smaller fee on a yearly basis - less that 50% the price the old app was sold for - and continue to develop BattleScribe "in place". Buying a pass unlocks the Supporter features for a year, with no risk that the app will be replaced in future and become obsolete, thus invalidating your purchase. You know exactly what you're getting for your money, with no uncertainty.
For those of you who bought BattleScribe Pro in the past, I have provided a reasonable way to upgrade to 2.0, which I hope will go some way to ensuring you are not left out in the cold.
For BattleScribe as a business, it means my income is sustainable and predictable and I can continue to work on it for years to come. A small yearly fee more accurately reflects the ongoing work and development it takes to keep BattleScribe up to date.
And none of us have to go through the painful transition to another "new" app ever again.
This is a money grab!
I'm sorry if you feel this way, though I do think it's a rather cynical outlook.
While I have made mistakes in the past, with various bugs and issues plaguing the app in the the early days, I have only ever been open and honest about what I am doing and why. I have never done anything dishonest or deceitful that should make you sceptical of my motives, and in keeping with that I have laid out above exactly how and why BattleScribe 2.0 is priced the way it is.
Yes, ultimately it is a business decision, and one aimed at making sure BattleScribe can continue as a business in a sustainable way. But there is no shame in asking to be paid for the work that you do.
I understand that this new pricing model will not suit everyone, and that's fine. If you want to continue using BattleScribe 1.15, you can. If you want to use BattleScribe 2.0 for free, you can. If you feel BattleScribe brings you enough value that you want to throw a couple of bucks into the tip jar each year, then thank you!
I could make comparisons to the price of a cup of coffee, or the cost of a single miniature, but ultimately the value judgement is yours to make.

This would have served him better if he had posted it before a lot of us unknowingly bricked our old version. As for "it is still valid" please explain to me how to roll it back since there was not an announcement and we unknowingly downloaded files that crash the old system, hence bricked.
Thairne I can appreciate your opinion of battlescribe and the FREE effort you put into the system, However you are a horrible representative of the company to tell disgruntled PAYING customers to get the heck out if you don't like it. That is the dumbest thing you can do. Had battlescribe posted to its users (I am on three mobile and one PC and never knew this was happening)that this was happening then somehow I think it would have gone smoother.
This is a cash grab and nothing more. You should be making money on the ads which should compensate you for your "tireless efforts" to keep the files up to date. Of which we are to understand is done for free...so....hmmmm.
As to the comparison to GW....that is the attitude that destroyed their market share and their long term profits sooo....yeah...not the best model to follow.
So much complaining about coughing up the price of about a tenth of a single GW clampack figure per year. What's that come to? One boot and half a shins worth of plastic, maybe part of some skull acne?
This thread should really be us plebs thanking the data file creators for all their hard unpaid work.
Currently most played: Silent Death, Mars Code Aurora, Battletech, Warcrow and Infinity.
I have to admit when the changeover first happened I was annoyed. On the face of it, releasing a new app that looks like an update, that looks like it is invalidating a paid app is pretty crummy behaviour.
Most people won't immediately be aware that old BattleScribe will continue to get support, or that the files will still work etc.
But Jon's reasons are completely valid. This isn't a cash grab, and the old app that people paid for is still available.
As for 2.0 the jury is still out as far as I'm concerned, it seems to run very slowly on iOS. So list building takes me a lot longer than it used to. I'm going to stick with it and give it a fair chance though, hopefully as kinks and bugs are worked out it will speed up, I'm sure eventually I will subscribe.

Well I used it on my kindle and there isn't a version 2.0 on their app store, and downloading of git hub does not fix the issue it still wants me to fill a field that's greyed out.
Until a year ago, I'd used Army Builder (Lone Wolf Development) which I've probably used for well over a decade. I prefer it still over Battlescribe but moved because Army Builder only panders to Apple users and I have Android - I prefer having a version I can use on the go rather than being stuck at the PC nowadays. Besides, there's no MEdge data for Army Builder either.
Currently most played: Silent Death, Mars Code Aurora, Battletech, Warcrow and Infinity.

This is where you err.
I'm not a representative of 'the company", which is a one man show.
It is my opinion and I do not adhere to some marketing yadda or standards.
Rolling back per definition is not possible, BUT - all you need to do is to install the 1.15 battlescribe and download the data from here:
https://github.com/BSData/wh40k/releases/tag/v4.18.7 that is the last release we did before 2.0 went public.
To be sure uninstall the 2.0 BS and corresponding files not to mix things up, then keep using the product you paid for forever!
Also, do you have any idea on how long Jon worked on 2.0? He started work in January. So about 10-11 months of work to get the app ready for the increasingly complex requirements on the data.
And if 0.99€ bother you that much after being in this hobby... that is if you're not using the desktop version which gives you lifetime free access... or take such offense on the pretty subtle adds which make it FREE...

Battlescribe was a good idea when I found it a few years ago, so I paid up. I got a lot of time out of it, and waiting for the datafiles to get updated is something I can live with, as GW refuse to support these things.
Now there is a new version, I still have the old one to fall back on (after I found the app relisted on the Google Play store). I have yet to try the new one properly, but it sounds like the pain of changing is worth going through.
Big thanks to the datafile maintainers like Thairne, as I have a rough time learning programming, and that would take up too much hobby time for me to do it myself. I do hope Jon (?) gets you fed occasionally

People talking like the Battlescribe bros fumbling the ball is akin to Microsoft ballsing up a major xbox one update. Stop acting so entitled ansd put it in perspective. That sub fee probably barely covers their overheads, of course theres gonna be issues now and then...
Yup, the formations are all on there, which were only in the new codex.
It could just do with a codex date listing in the title, like a lot of the other armies have.

Has the gaming community come to a new low? I mean it's one thing to complain about GW prices, but to complain about $5 now? And that is what $5 Canadian?
Wow just wow on some people here.

If GW made it, half the people moaning would quite happily buy it for ten times the price and then buy updates every year. And praise GW for their awesomeness.
Feels so daft people moaning about 1.99 a year yet it's to help them play with massess of toy soldiers that cost $20 each in some cases.

Oh no I'd boycott the blatant price gouging by not using that service.
The issue isn't price for me it's the piss poor rollout that's left me without a useable version the old files from github don't work for me I can't make new lists and 2.0 isn't available on my platform.
Also as I have said it has nothing to do with price. It is the way it was handled. If army builder had a mobile build version I would purchase that in a heartbeat. I stopped using army builder due to the two year license renewal. I purchased the BS license because I thought his app was great and I wanted to support him. His rollout makes me want to take my business elsewhere. The more Thairne talks the less I want anything to do with battlescribe....

I'm having trouble with a lot of the data files, and I mean a lot, so I doubt it's errors in the files themselves, since they worked just fine in the old version and I doubt they've been updated. For example, if I try and build an army using the Ork Horde Detachment, I can't add anything.
I've moved onto using google docs for army lists now. I can access them on both my phone and my laptop, and any changes I make on one carry over to the other. I have to do all the calculations myself, but that's not too much extra work.
The only problem I'm having right now - other than the interface for the Codex: Space Marines roster file being unpleasantly awkward - is that a Kill Team Detachment tells me I need to add three Specialists, but doesn't actually give me a way to do so.
As for old data files, when I go to http://battlescribedata.appspot.com/#/repos there's a message in a red box saying "Looking for data for BattleScribe 1.15.x?
The data on this site is being migrated to BattleScribe 2.0 format. This format is not compatible with BattleScribe 1.15.x or below. Some data authors have archived their old 1.15.x data on their GitHub page. " Click the link, and you get to https://github.com/BSData
Click the 40k link, scroll down and read the bit about old versions.
The problem I'm having is with incredibly long load times and crashes. It takes several minutes to load forces on my ipad and often crashes when I try to go back and add a new force to a list I already have. I appear to have the most updated version with 2.00.09 since I can't update it more through the app store.
I paid for the premium version before and would be inclined to do so again if this one were running more smoothly. Are these known issues or is this working as intended?
Nobody has an update on this? I have found that some factions are working ok on the ipad version, but chaos is what most of my list-building has been on and it is especially atrocious. I'm still getting frequent crashes and several minutes of loading time when I try to create or edit a list.

Only 30k works on mine all other files crash the app, I've gotten replacements for most systems though.
As it stands battlescribes gone the way of the dinosaurs for me.
