Hey everyone. The 40k bug has bit me again, but my lack of funds mean I need to dig around and any new projects need to come from some of my used armies. Since my Fantasy Ogres aren't selling, I figure I should figure out how to convert them up into something new and interesting. Age of Sigmar, sure, but for 40k....what?

My thoughts were either: Beasts of Nurgle, Nurgle Terminators, or Imperial Ogryns. Problem is, none of these are something you can fill an army with. Sure, I can make some Plague Bearers, or even salvage some Marines to go with, but...well, the more of a focus on the Ogres, the better.

So, which of these three units would be worth converting a dozen or more Ogres to? Are there any other units or beasties that might work for Fantasy Ogres conversions? Any overall thoughts for conversions on the cheap?

I add heavy weapons and greenstuff and use them as inquisitorial servitors. Not the best unit in the game ( not as bad as you might think either ) but they are sure fun to convert.

Other options are genestealer brutes, that would sure be an interesting army. Or you could take a look at the 30k rules for Imperial Militia and Cults that army list has some interesting rules about using ogre sized mutants or abhuman models you would not even have to convert that much, and getting into 30k might be a lot of fun.

I was about to recommend digging up Imperial Armour rules for Chaos Ogryn for even more conversion fun, but they manage (somehow) to be quite a bit worse than normal Ogryn (which aren't impressive already). Even in a Militia force you'd probably be using them as Ogryn proper, there aren't any ways to make Militia troops not 1-Wound T3 models. I'd recommend putting your conversion hat on and coming up with some sort of Possessed/Spawn-based army out of them; in 40k proper that'd be a Crimson Slaughter army, in 30k that'd be Word Bearers using the Rite of War that makes Gal Vorbak Troops.

(A really serious challenge would be trying to turn them into Thallaxi, but that could get messy and difficult.)

Yeah, the actual Ogryns don't seem that strong or even interesting, so that's out.

Do the Crimson Slaughter allow Spawn to be used as troops? Possessed (as well as any regular marines) use a smaller base then Ogres, though MIGHT be useable...

No idea on 30k, though 40k seems to be more of the focus, so I'd prefer to focus on that. Being ABLE to run them in 30k would be cool, though.

Thallaxi would probably be quite out of the question. Going from a very fleshy model to a sleek robot just won't work, sadly.

Crimson Slaughter works Possessed in as Troops, not Spawn, but it's the closest I think we're going to get to a core Troops build that makes sense with the model size and works on the table.

Hmm, true, true... That does still make them elites, right? Wracks are the troops for the Homunculus stuff?

Wracks and Grotesques are both technically Elites. You'd be playing a Coven-supplement army with the 2-6 HQ/2-8 Elites/0-4 Heavy Support detachment if you were going to do it that way.

And/or an army made up of Grotesquerie formations (Haemonculus/2 Grotesque units with a Combat Drugs-style signature mutation table).

I will second the Grotesquery formation for the DEldar. One of the few competitive things the True Kin have these days.

Also, the actual Grotesque model is mono-posed, so everyone kit-bashes them for added fun times.

Formation is two squads of Grots with a single Haemunculus (HQ). Generally run as 2 squads of 3 Grots, 1 Haemi, all in transports (which runs around 450 pts)
