My favorite story from 40k is probably the Burning of Prospero. I've been wanting to do a mixed force of Thousand Sons and Space Wolves (so, yes, I am going off in a slightly non-canonical direction with my fluff) for years... between 30k and the new TS plastics, now seems like a good time to actually make my army. What I'm not sure of is what friggen codex to use, because simply taking allied TS and SW detachments isn't really much of an option. Since I'm bending the fluff pretty hard, I'm not really too concerned about that, but I do have a pretty good idea of the mechanics I want to use... I'm just not sure where to find them (I'm a remarkably mediocre player, and the explosion of supplements just makes it that much harder for me to keep track of what's actually a good idea.)

I'd want to go psyker heavy. Both Space Wolves and Thousand Sons make heavy use of psykers, so simply taking a Librarian/Sorcerer or two isn't really going to cut it.

Elite, highly individualized troops. I see them existing in the edges of the Imperium, recruiting individuals over time. Forming up into neat, uniform tactical squads just doesn't fit.

Limited equipment. They're experienced, well trained, and general badasses. However, they also don't have forge worlds or legions to draw supplies from. I see it as a mostly infantry or cavalry based force... not much in the way of tanks or fancy dreadnoughts/centurions.

--------------

I think Deathwatch might not be a bad way to go. Taking a war coven / librarius conclave / some other similar formation, along with something that they can Battle Brother with could work too; Space Wolves with a Wyrdstorm Brotherhood might be a really good option. I'm really looking for some suggestions because, honestly, I'm not sure what's out there.

If you wait for Inferno to hit you could just build a TSons/Wolves Shattered Legions army...

Oh! Yeah, for 30k that's actually one of my plans. I'm either going to go Shattered Legion or Blackshield (biggest headache with Shattered Legion would be that I'd have to keep the units 6" apart or they'll start giving each other the stink eye... I think. Not quite sure how the allies matrix works if everything is in a single detachment.) For 40k I'm still scratching my head a bit (although, really, unless I stumble across some serious cheese I doubt people would get too cranky about me using a 30k list in a game of 40k.)

I dont think it would work well in 40k The new 1ksons stuff requires to heavy of a investment to really add anything but a few demons to a list. Let alone them not being able to buff each other or even use the same warp charges (maybe) I actually need to go find out how warp charges and come the apoc allied detachments work.

I don't know about the Thousand Sons but most Space Wolf buffs are Space Wolf specific.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.

Deathwatch lets you field psykers in their line units, don't they?

Well it seems I gave an answer the OP already knew, silly me. Need to read posts better. Anyhow, id vote death watch.

They do, yeah. Add in the ridiculous IoM allies matrix and they're *probably* going to be what I use.

TS (SW) buffs only work on TS (SW)

I'd be fielding both 'teams' using the same set of rules. Mechanically, they'd all be the same. The TS models would just have more Egyptian bits on their models, and the SW would have more Viking bits.

Thanks for all the feedback so far.

I'm surprised that no one suggested this one yet. Grey Knights.

Now yes, the codex itself isn't as strong as many of the others, but I think that it works out well in the psyker department for what you wanted to pull off. It also fits to the smaller, elite style force.

Oh stop complaining, its for the greater good... Now get in the box!

In Shattered Legions everyone counts each other as Sworn Bothers (like Battle-Brothers in 40k but they can't share transports) while your Warlord is alive, and revert to their normal alliance level if he dies.

So you'd need a tough Warlord, but you could do it.

As far as 40k goes I'm going to second Deathwatch; the Veteran statlines and customizability are as close as you'll get to Blackshields rules in 40k, the light vehicles/Deep Strike-heavy approach and reliance on fancy bolter ammo over massive guns speaks to the low-resources fringe-space theme, and you can stick Librarians into Kill-Teams wherever you want them.
