Greetings,
Trying to light the spark to get back into 40k with the new battle forces. Any opinions on the Space Wolves or Tau Battleforce from those who know the formations or have bought them already? Still getting my head around the whole formations. (shows how long I haven't played) lol

A heads up on how both armies are fairing in 7th would be awesome as well.

Thanks, Dakka

Please ignore the salty Chaos player. Both Space Wolves and Tau are upper-mid-tier, and their battleforces aren't even close to OP.

Space Wolves are one of the best close combat armies in the game, but balanced outside of certain spam lists. Tau are the best shooting armies in the game, and widely hated for essentially no reason (probably people spamming Riptides in casual metas). The Battleforce formation for Tau is fine.

If you want to play Tau, try to avoid spamming Riptides, and please don't take the Optimized Stealth Cadre in casual games.

Peregrine - If you like the army buy it, and don't worry about what one random person on the internet thinks.

Tau get a lot of hate because of how one sided their games tend to be. Either they blow you off the table or they don't and get rolled in close combat with very little in between. I say this as somebody who owns a Tau army and have seen the look on my opponents face when two turns of shooting destroys 70% of their army and an overwatch wiped out entire enemy charges. Tau are just an extreme design army that puts all their eggs into the shooting basket with next to no assault or zero psychic phase presence. That being said the Tau Battleforce is a nice mix of stuff which makes for a nice sampler of units to expand from 1-2 Start Collecting boxes while both the formations for the Tau are very mild and focus on their movement. Both the Battleforce and the Start Collecting boxes are good value for the Tau and can make a good launching point for them.

First question. Do you like to win a lot. If yes field the following.

Tau: BIG suits the bigger the better, and only field suits + some ways to get marker lights its just that simple.

Space wulfs: Wulfen + their formations and the space wulf wulf riders is all you ever need to look into .

Both are on the high end of the power curve and monotone one trick ponies.

If you don't want to play that competitive you can just take whatever you want.

Tau can do lots of stuff. Mechanized, infantry, mobile suits, melee. Yes, melee Tau exists. And it's hilarious.

Get out. OP has shown no interest in them. That's on the level of suggesting Orks to a person who's wondering what paint scheme they want for their Marines.

The tau battle force isn't good unless you've one or two start collecting boxes IMO. As a tau player, I can say without a doubt that the commander needs either some drones and/or a squad of suits, the devil fish is only good with a squad of breachers, and that the pathfinders want either crisis suits or fire warriors to buff. The new box works really well with the start collecting box, but not on its own unless you've some prexisting purchases.

The space wolf one isn't a very good formation (If I remember correctly) but it is an amazing deal.

Not sure about the Tau one, but it seems like a pretty good deal.

(OT) The deathwatch one is the only really good formation that I can think of though...

The start collecting x2 plus the battle force is enough for a hunter cadre + auxiliary.

Thanks for all the replys, always guaranteed help from the awesome forum of dakka. Lol but now you Have me looking at deathwatch. Looking for one purchase at the moment to get me going that's why I was looking at the new battleforces instead of the start collecting boxes.
Anyone have a good configuration of arming the vets? Thanks

I don't know why, but after the past six months or so of being constantly insulted and ridiculed by random people on Dakka, WoW General Discussion, and the Eternal Crusade forums, this is the first hurtful comment to actually bring tears to my eyes.

Magnets!

(More immediately you'll want all the frag cannons and Infernus bolters you've got, but minimize other upgrade guns and avoid the melee loadouts like the plague (hammer Blackshields look cool on paper, until you notice they're more expensive than getting an entire Librarian). The bolters and shotguns are enough for most small targets, the frag cannons and Infernus HBs are enough for most big targets. You'll have enough shoulder pads out of that box (45 spares, by my count) to last through a bunch more models if you get that far.)

That's the real issue with Space Wolves IMO. I was looking at their painting guide recently and it's all a bunch of gray armor and orange hair. It's a cool box and there are some interesting models but the colour scheme is just blah. I still think it's the best battle-force though.

The AdMech box.

But seriously, the Tau are better than Wolves on the table top, but I don't think any of the real power units are in the battle force...

In all of these interactions what/who is the only constant? Do you really think such behavior towards you, from such varied sources, is the product of coincidence or is it perhaps time you started to examine whether or not how you interact with others is causing them to react to you in the manner you stated. You might be able to completely fix the problem.

To the OP, you can't go wrong with either one of those boxes. Both SW and Tau are in a great position rules wise. Do you like vikings or robots more?

Generic characters disappearing? Elite units of your army losing options and customizations? No longer finding that motivation to convert?

Oh young Shas'ui let me show you the power of a more powerful list that actual took top place in a big tournament. http://bloodofkittens.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Jermey-Martino-1st-Overall-Omegacon-2016.pdf

Not a single big suit in it and it's performed better than Triptide and 2 Stormsurge or even TripVara and two Stormsurge. It is the first major Tau first place win in ages. I actually ran a fairly similar list myself undefeated. The Skyray is like the master Shas'o's prefered tool of choice. Same with Kroot.

Edit
Two people being nice to each other on the internet... and on dakka? Truly these are the end of days. Also awwww.... not even being sarcastic or anything.

Edit
I used to be one of the sisters haters. I thought they looked dumb and didn't make sense and now the cool models got released and I've changed my mind and was clearly wrong. Getting treated like a pariah and outcast just for playing Tau in real life and on the internet makes me feel like gak. I can only imagine how sisters players felt/feel.

I hate to 'White Knight', but I feel in this instance it is appropriate.

I've actually noticed often people are unnecessarily rude to Pouncey just because his perspectives, inferences or delivery style are different to theirs or the groupthink. I don't think I've ever seen Pouncey be particularly rude, certainly nothing memorable enough to recall. Yes, maybe sisters are lamented a little too often. I don't think it is appropriate to tell someone who hasn't been rude to change their persona to avoid irritating people that are?

Keep doing your thing Pouncey, keep your head above the haters as you have been doing for the past 6 months you mention... the fact they reply to you shows that they feel you still have something worth reading/replying to and haven't ignored you. Keep providing your own on topic thoughts!

OP: apologies for not posting any on topic thoughts; I don't have any atm. Will investigate!

Wow, this thread got shakey real quick.

To the OP, I would recommend the Frag Cannons and IHB, as well as a couple Cyclone Missile Termies for Aquilla Kill Teams. A tactic that seems to be working is 'Breacher' Vet squads. 10 men all with Storm Shields and Bolters. You might need quite a few kits (only 2 in a box) or get bits online, but you end up with a 3++ squad which doesn't care much about your low AP weapons.

If you want to know more about the Deathwatch, there is a Deathwatch tactics section in 40k Tactics, which is a super helpful resource.

If you can't believe in yourself, believe in me! Believe in the Dakka who believes in you!

The best way to answer the question is to ask: how much do you like to build models? Space Wolves would offer more conversion opportunities thanks to bitz being super prevalent.
