So, I decided to do a silly thing and try and fit a Coils of the Hydra RoW with Alpharius into 2000 points. It actually worked surprisingly well all things considered.
List was the following:

----------------------------------------
HQ
----------------------------------------
Armilius Dynat - 200

Exodus - 115

Sabotuer w/ Artificer Armour - 95
----------------------------------------
Elites
----------------------------------------
Contemptor - Mortis Dreadnought - 180
- Twin Assault Cannons

Rewards of Treason - 295
5x Tyrant Siege Terminators (4 and squad leader)
----------------------------------------
Troops
----------------------------------------
3 x Legion Tactical Squad - 495
- All 10 dudes strong
- All sarges have fists, power daggers, and artificer armour.
----------------------------------------
Heavy Support
----------------------------------------
Legion SIcaran - 205
- Lascannon Sponsons
----------------------------------------
Lord of War
----------------------------------------
Alpharius - 415
----------------------------------------

So that's the list! I used it against a 2k point NL list, running Curze, 3 terror squads (2 with all volkite chargers), 1 of the raptor squads (These guys ran with Curze), a praetor, 5 lascannon dudes, dual ccw dreadnought.
Dynat ran with the Terminators, primarily for his Cognis, while this makes for a 495 point unit, it was actually incredibly effective. Coupled with Alpharius' Preferred Enemy (Everything) they were hitting on 2's with re-rollable 1's, and then against most things with a toughness value wounding on 2's rerolling 1's - safe to say I was comfortably popping a squad a turn
The exodus was underwhelming, I took him to pick out special dudes from units but they were few and far between so he just killed a couple of random marines and not much else.
The volkites made short work of my tactical squads - like super short work.
I was fortunate enough to take 3 wounds off Curze in a single round of bolter overwatch (he was with the Night Raptors so I was wounding on 4's not 6's) - and then fail his charge by 1" (with night raptors so couldn't use fleet and had already used jump pack in moving phase).
I ran alpharius hidden in a tactical squad, I am not sure I'd do this again and i wouldn't mind having preferred enemy from the get go.
Also took the Infiltrate mutable tactic as it was the only legal way for me to run this list.

My issue is this though, I want a cheaper way to get a cognis with the Tyrant Termies - the only way to do that is to take a Master of SIgnal, which isn't a compulsary HQ so I would be forced into also taking a praetor which as a result gives me an extra model but no point saving, should I just stick with Dynat in this instance?
Any other changes you'd make? looking to expand on this list to push it to 2.5k soon, also perhaps looking for a way not forcing me to take the infiltrate mutable tactic is a plus.

This feels like a quasi-duplication. I'd keep one sneaky bugger and turn the other into wounds on the table, or putting your tacticals into rhinos or increasing their size for survivability.

Of the two, I'd be inclined to ditch Exodus. Give the Sab a jump pack, melta bombs, combimelta.

If you're taking Alphy hidden, place him in one that will be mobile to best place him.

Yeah, I am not sold on the exodus, the Sabotuer can generally make his points back and then some with his entering the table ability tbh, that is why I have kept him cheap
I am tempted to get 3 rhinos, however to be truely viable I need a transport solution for the Tyrants too!

You can give Tyrants deep strike via Dynat, thus letting you pick whatever for Mutable Tactics. But then you have to lose Alpharius.

I don't like the list, lacks any power units except Tyrants and they are small, too many points spent on Force multipliers,
No transport for Alpharius and he can't join any units if you activate Mutable tactic infiltrate.

Yeah I dont want to drop alpharius, the preferred enemy here is what really helps them.
I started Alpharius hidden when I played so the whole infiltrate thing was a non-issue (although hadn't actually realised he does not benefit from the Mutable tactic...how gak).

And you're right, the only real unit worth a damn in that list is the 5 man squad - I think that is an issue with this RoW in general at low points. I could always not run the Rite of War and alter the list a bit to be more well rounded!

Alpharius has the 'Master of the Legion' special rule, so he can be your warlord and grant coils of the hydra.

Scrapping Dyant and Exodus then taking a centurion (mandatory HQ choice with upgrades to taste) and a master of signal will save a few points that can be invested in Rhinos and small changes. You could even take a second sicarian if my calculations are correct.

Can always run Primarch's Chosen and dispense with any other HQs. That would be the only way I'd bring a Primarch at 2000 points.
