This is the second White Dwarf I've bought on the Apple Store, the last one being I think October (the Deathwatch vs Genestealer Cult battle report). I bought them both for the same reason, to read the battle report.
I found the battle report a bit disappointing, mainly because I would have liked to see some shots of the models in action. The photos that were there were too zoomed out and didn't really show anything. I'm not particularly fussed about competitive army lists, an attempt to make a cinematic narrative would be nice.
The other thing that jumped out at me was the Tau vs Adeptus Mechanicus display. The background showing the planet and stars was especially cool serving as a backdrop.
There were a couple of articles I barely read that I'd like to get back to. I'll probably read the one from the Golden Demon winner. Though I'm not that interested in the painting articles as I'm happy when my models look decent, not award winning.

They need to keep these two guys, Erik and Dan, away from battle reports though. This is the second battle report for 40k these two guys have done where it's "We didn't use points just picked what we liked and calculated points later" resulting in 5300 points of Imperium versus 5200 points of Chaos, which I guess makes for a good model showcase, but shows nothing as far as actually playing the game, which is something I strongly lament from the old White Dwarf days when you could actually glean tactics and list construction (albeit not uber-competitive) from the battle reports. This was more or less a joke of "Let's just show all these pretty models" and I found it quite lame. These two did the same thing in the Genestealer vs. Deathwatch report in October, where they "just chose models" and miraculously ended up with about 2500 points each (and some illegal lists but ignored that).
IMO it has little to do with those two guys in particular and more to do with an over-all strategy. The 40K (possibly Sigmar too, but I only read the 40K stuff) battle reports have been done in this way since the beginning of 6th ed. Where they used to present coherent lists and clean reports, they've now moved to "XYZ is coming out so I've picked an army consisting of ONE OF EVERYTHING out of the new book. It will be facing off against a RANDOMLY SELECTED PILE OF STUDIO MINIATURES! So EXCITING!" lol In the past they didn't even bother to list point levels at all. At least these two seem to try and point stuff out.
But yeah, I'm with you on the reports in general. Liking the "new" WD format a lot, but I really wish they'd go back to the old style of report where you had proper lists and point levels and an easy to follow report with really nice editorial style photography. I think it would show the game off better, and I think it would even be a better showing for whatever new stuff was coming out because you would get to see that stuff perform in a game that you might actually play. I don't know too many people who are going to replicate those two "lists".
6/10 for me.
The Cadia article was cool, and I liked Blanchitsu, but the battle rep fell way short for me and I wish they'd go into a little more detail on the conversion process in the Blanchistu articles. Like more in depth on the HOW some of that stuff was done. Also agree that there were too many Golden Demon pics. In a magazine that already features a lot of well painted miniatures by default. an article that specifically features well painted miniatures starts to be redundant imo. Plus, I wish there had been more about Cadia. This is such a huge event for the 40K setting/players and it feels like they're treating it no different than any other basic campaign.
EDIT:
On a side note that has less to do with the magazine - I really dislike the new Celestine. She looks unfinished to me.

8/10. I haven't read it all yet, but I've read enough to know that I want to go back to enough articles to read them properly.
Most liked: Golden Demon articles.
Least liked: Review of the Year - would have liked this if shorter, but after a little while began to think "space filler..."

Still waiting on my copy. To date, only one time has my copy arrived on time. First month - two weeks late. 2nd month 10 days late, which it would have been 12 days late, but I called and they dispatched a replacement copy and then the subscriber copy showed up two days later. 3rd month - in my mailbox day of release. 4th month 4 days late.
GW is doing a lot of things right at the moment , but they are failing subscribers miserably on their delivery commitment.
The anecdotal evidence is undeniable that significant numbers of subscribers are not getting the issue on time. There is no excuse.
They have more than enough feedback that shows that their current mail date results in consistently late delivery. What's worse is they had two extra weeks between the December issue which released on Nov. 25 and the January issue shelf date. You might think the Holiday's might have had an impact, but because of when Christmas and New Year's actually fell there were no postal delivery days lost. Also the extra two weeks gave the printer plenty of time to make up for any days they might have been closed, and again no GW went without having copies in their stores the Wednesday before to make the Friday shelf date.

Honestly I'd expect problems for the first 6 to 12 months. This wasn't a pre planned thing where they got everything organised before launch, did a few issues in advance and were good to go, they literally kicked the idiot out, and completely changed direction. they need to catch up and get ahead on everything from writing and design all the way through to production and delivery.
Remember, white dwarf was published 3 months ahead. Give them time, there's a fair chance they're working their guts out at the moment.

Is it mainly US subscribers having problems? I've gotten mine more than a week before retail release every time.

via the FB page :
Thanks for your comments on January's issue, everyone. Keep them coming. But we've got something else we'd like your thoughts on, too…
Did you know that this year White Dwarf turns 40? That's right – White Dwarf first appeared all the way back in 1977 and needless to say later in 2017 we'll be celebrating. We'd like to hear from you about your thoughts, your favourites, your recollections on this milestone, and we'll print the best of the responses in the anniversary issue later in the year.
So, for starters, we'd love to know the following:
What was your first issue? Had you been in the hobby a while or was it White Dwarf that got you into it?
Which issue is your favourite ever? Tell us what it meant to you.
Which articles or features do you remember the most? Tell us what you remember about them.
But you don't need to stop there. We're sure you've all got plenty more to talk about besides, so let us hear it in the comments.

Same here.
At this point, I'd rather just support my local FLGS and buy from them when my subscription runs out. I'll get it sooner, at any rate.
I like the quality of the White Dwarf magazine. I have enjoyed reading them and feel I get my $$ out of the experience. But getting a subscription AFTER the FLGS in all cases but one is not acceptable.

White Dwarf

Hello folks. If you've seen our Review of the Year in this month’s White Dwarf, you’ll know that we’re after your votes for Model of the Year. Want to join in and cast your vote? Well here’s how…
YOUR MODEL OF THE YEAR
2016 was a great year for new miniatures. But how do we pick a favourite? Well, that’s where you lot come in. All you need to do is choose your five favourite Citadel Miniatures from amongst the many released in 2016 and email your list to team@whitedwarf.co.uk or include it in the comments below.
Feel free to tell us why you picked the models you did, too – we might even include your thoughts when we publish the results later in the year. We’ve included a few examples of the models that came out in the image here but you can pick any five Citadel miniatures from 2016 you like, not just the ones shown here. We’ll close the voting on Sunday 29 January and bring you the results later in the year.
All the best,
The White Dwarf team
Crates FTW !

Was a pretty good issue for me, 8/10. Though, I'm mostly interested in the hobby content (usually glossing over the battle reports, which I agree are not always the greatest).
The real standout articles to me were the army painting and terrain articles. While none of it is necessarily game-changing advice, they both highlight great techniques to get stuff on the table faster.
Was disappointed that we didn't get more info on that sweet new Lord of Change though.
