Hi all.

First time posting about this topic.

I am starting to get into making some sort of fun List for the Astra Militarum

what would you guys suggest? what wouldnt you suggest? Just looking to get some info on what is good and what is super fun to play with!

I love their Tanks and Infantry! There rules for an infantry squad confuse me a little for what is minimum needed.

But thanks in advance!

Hey!

I might not have as much experience as many here, but I play AM...

Mechanized Veterans is a fun and mobile army to play; Veteran squads loaded up in Chimeras, Tauroxs', and Vendettas to grab control objectives. I wouldn't say it's insanely competitive, but I'm sure some may argue!

Alternatively, gun-line guard often consist of artillery/leman russes, wrapped with platoons, and cheap conscripts, to keep them safe from mobile units deep striking into your backline.

Thats the basic flavours... but theres lots to try! Overall the formations for guard aren't as pivotal as other factions, but some to look into would be the Psykanna Division, or Emperors Wrath Artillery Company (In the Mont'ka book).

If you're just starting out, I'd recommend going for a Combined Arms Attachment with a good mix, and see what you like to play most! Maybe grab a squad of Veterans, in a Chimera with plasma guns, a platoon of 2 10 man squads, and a 5 man PCS, and a leman russ, and get a feel for what works for you.

Overall guard can be played very statically - a gunline army in some cases. Certainly not always true, but a lot of infantry heavy armies take heavy weapons in their squads, and combine the squads to form "blobs"...

Rules for the platoon are a bit tricky:

miniumum platoon is 1 Platoon Command Squad, and 2 10 man Infantry Squads. That all counts as a single troops choice. Past that you can add more infantry squads, conscripts, etc, but if it's under the same platoon slot, it still only qualifies as 1 troops slot. I suggest taking veteran squads if you're not eager to go so troop heavy!

Hope this helps!

so my advice if you like tanks and infantry than run the armored battle company list from fw. with a infatry shield platoon formation or two.
my advice would be to play either death korp or elysium drop troops to be honest both are super fun. death korp gives you a world War 1 army that uses a lot of infantry try and artillery and elysium are perhaps the most comeptive army for ig due to the fact they can take fliers as deity ates transports and play like a air mobile army.

If you don't like/understand the infantry platoons you can use Veteran squads. They are also effective and use the same models so just start with them until you feel like you have feel of it.

rules for Infantry: Must take 1 PCS and minimum of 2 IP(up to 5) the rest is optional. thats one troop choice but each unit dosnt need to be in coherence(that couple inches rule) so its like a formation.

This pretty much for infantry.

You need one Platoon Command Squad and minimum 2 Infantry Squad, that then gives you access to all the excellence that is the rest of the infantry platoon. I'm a huge fan of conscripts and special weapons teams

Personally I run the minimum two infantry squads with heavy weapons and use them for supporting fire/holding down an area. Conscripts (30 man group) with a Commissar/Priest are then used to advance forward as quickly as possible. Special Weapons Teams are deployed when/where appropriate. Last but not least, Veterans in Chimeras to move up fast and take areas/flank, tanks to move up behind the infantry and put out as much damage as possible.

You say Fiery Crash! I say Dynamic Entry!

*Increases Game Point Limit by 100*: Tau get two Crisis Suits and a Firewarrior. Imperial Guard get two infantry companies, artillery support, and APCs.
