I have the entire line of daemons from 40k for both Nurgle and Tzeentch. Plus greater deamons, character models, etc.

What would I need to get to use them in Age of Sigmar? Do I need some AoS special characters or units? I know almost next to nothing about the game.

Any suggestions?

You have almost everything you need to play. Just get Grand Alliance Chaos and GHB. I say GAC because there you'll get a glimpse on what else you can get. Here you can not only make an army of just daemons but include other toys the other factions have for you. If you just want to play daemons you're fine and dandy as it is with just the GHB and maybe a cheatsheet of rules for the god-specific batallions found in GAC.

Does Sigmar have certain builds that are powerful (like in 40k) or is it more balanced?

From what I've seen the top 5 armies at the two main tournaments have, in so far, been totally different. Still you'll get plenty of mileage from a nurgle tallyband and you will rarely (if ever) go wrong with a GUO and Kairos. There's more balance (in the sense that kill'em'all and forget about objectives is a strategy that will make you systematically lose) but there's still tiers. The good thing is that you can come up with a lot of ways of dealing with most stuff, some way or another.

I keep eyeing that Glottkin model, even those the $$ plus painting sounds like a nightmare.

I've heard people have varying stories from the Glotkin. From just okay to got trashed turn 1 of combat.

Nearly 3k+ points of Slaanesh (AoS)
2500 points of Ironjawz
Too many points of Space Marines.

There are several armies that have shown up multiple times at the top of tournaments, or at least 'categories' of army. Sadly Nurgle is not one of them but short of a very top-tier list Nurgle can do quite well, certainly well enough to top local tournaments. Balance in AoS overall is, from what I understand, not as bad as 40k. Very competitive lists are still miles stronger than average lists, but for the most part the average list is close enough to its peers that there isn't a huge issue.

Glottkin is extremely powerful, ridiculously so even, but has a notable learning curve. This is because while good at combat and good at magic, the biggest strength of the Glottkin by far is their command ability. Also somewhat strange is that the Glottkin benefit more from leading a daemon army than a mortal one, between their command ability (which is downright amazing on plaguebearers and plague drones), their signature spell (on 30-man plaguebearer units), and Epidemius they become a force multiplier like no other.

Road to Renown! It's like classic Path to Glory, but repaired, remastered, expanded! https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/778170.page

I chose an avatar I feel best represents the quality of my post history.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.

The Glottkin are good, but like anything in AoS they can be killed. It's difficult to do that in a round, but not impossible.

As NinthMusketeer says, the best thing about them is their command ability. Plaguebearers (or just about anything, actually) with +1 attack from the command ability, +1 wound and +1 save from spells, become extremely nasty.

Their command ability is quite unusual in that it affects all nurgle units. You don't give it to a single unit, or only units from a specific faction. It covers a pretty big area and works on marauders, skaven plague monks, blightkings, plaguebearers, chaos warriors, the horses pulling your chaos chariots, and everything else.

I find that this changes list building a bit. There's less reason to go for a single death star unit that you intend to pile buffs onto - because everyone gets the buff.

One other cool thing about them is that their melee attacks all have decent reach. If you can pull it off, you can get them fighting from behind their bubblewrap.

Having said all that, you certainly don't need them. Just download the app. You do need the general's handbook for points values and allegiance abilities and I'd recommend getting the physical copy. I got it through the app and I find it isn't particularly optimised. Small text, and you have to keep coming out of the app to look at warscrolls, and vice versa. But it does add points values to the app if you do it that way.
