Question for you all, can someone please tell me the relationship between Citadel (GW) and Forgeworld?
The reason I ask is that i'd like to build a regiment of Death Korps of Krieg, which to my knowledge used to be manufactured by GW. However now they are made by FW.
Are they still a legitimate unit to use in the Warhammer 40K universe according to GW rules?

FW is a part of GW. DKoK were always made by FW.
So yep, they're entirely legitimate to use in 40k

I think you are thinking of the steel legion as the ones originally made by GW, since they have similar aesthetics.
Both are legal for GW games, at a GW store.

Of course, any appropriate miniature can be used to play any wargame. You don't have to use GW miniatures in 40k at all...

You do if you're playing at a GW location. Or in a tourney that requires legal models or you want to play WYSIWYG... the list goes on.

The list doesn't go on, these are the only 2 examples where you need to use GW models. Do such tournaments actually exist?
There is sufficient diversity within wargaming and 3rd party companies that WYSIWYG can easily be covered for just about anything.

Which isn't actually answering the OPs question, which is 1) are they the same company, and 2) can I use them under GWs rules (which I meant to mean at a GW store).
"Are Toyotas and Nissans buiilt around the same chassis?" "You can buy a Ford."
To answer the OP: GW and FW are the same company, as is Black Library. They are all branches of GW itself. So, yes, you can use them according to GW rules, and in GW stores. You have more options if playing with friends, in tournaments, at local game stores, or any venue that does not require " GW models".
But I'd still suggest going with the armies that really inspire you. I have a huge Dkok army because I just love the sculpting and the look.

I already answered the OP's question.
GW's 'rules' on the use of their models with their games should be treated with the contempt that it deserves.

The impact of peoples fear of having their models being "GW-illegal" is grossly overblown compared to what actual impact this have in the real world.
Apart from some players in the UK that have a GW store as their primary gaming-location the number of events (let alone casual games) where GW has any say in what models are used is minuscule.
Especially since GW stopped giving a crap about organizing tournaments etc outside of one [1] location (Warhammer world) a decade ago or something.

As pointed out, you might be getting confused between Steel Legion and Death Korps
Steel Legion were manufactured by GW in the 90s, made from metal, and some models are still available in the webstore:
Death Korps are manufactured by Forge World, and have their own army lists in the Imperial Armour books (though you could still use them as regular AM if you want):
Forgeworld is a subsidiary company owned by GW, so they're really just different branches of the same thing - think of Forge World as GW's specialist resin models department. Both are based on the same campus in Nottingham. Forgeworld models ARE Games Workshop models, and legal to use at any of their stores and tournaments.

Ahhh yes it was the Steel Legion I was hoping to get

If I say I want only GW models used in GW games in my garage that would be a third. If my friend says the same thing that's a fourth. THE LIST GOES ON.... And yes. They very much so do indeed exist.
There is sufficient diversity within wargaming and 3rd party companies that WYSIWYG can easily be covered for just about anything.
But those third party models aren't GW.
Which isn't actually answering the OPs question, which is 1) are they the same company, and 2) can I use them under GWs rules (which I meant to mean at a GW store).
His first question was what their relationship was, not if they were the same company or not.
"Are Toyotas and Nissans buiilt around the same chassis?" "You can buy a Ford."
And this is irrelevant. built*

Yea, I'm sure this happens a lot
Also, what happens if you go to the garage of friend number two, where you are not allowed to play unless you've included at least one non- GW model in your army? Sounds like just as realistic a scenario.

In that case you don't need to, you just want to.
Thats quite sad actually
