Hey guys, just wanting to showcase my Ultramarines. Been painting for years and never had taken the opportunity to paint Ultramarines, just wanted to know what you guys think. All comments and critiques are welcome!

This.

Crisp, clean, smooth, paintjob. Looks like they stepped off the box or out of an official painting guide.

Excellent job.

Having looked at these again, because they're so damn pretty...I would say I think a different type of tuft would suit the bases much better (the green on there is really super bright).

Maybe consider something like Army Painter tufts...perhaps Wasteland, Highlands, or Swamp versions? I think they would work much better with the basing.

I agree.. I bought them and didn't realize how bright they were until I put them on. To make matters worse I ended up finding the box of tufts that I already had that had a much more muted color. -__-

Thanks for all the positive comments! There's so many great paintjobs on this site that I honestly didn't expect much of a reaction other than a few pointers.

On another note I ended up finishing a Rhino for the squad today however the clouds decided to roll in and now the lighting is pretty poor for a photo. I'll update tomorrow when I'm able to take a proper photo.

Thanks again guys!

Very nice!

Really nice weathering on the Rhino. The hunter killer looks great mounted like that.

Have you considered weathering the greaves of your marines to match their ride?

I did think about it, however I felt that I wouldn't have liked the look of it on the SM themselves. I considered not doing it on the rhino either, however after seeing it painted up it looked a bit too clean to me personally.

I actually have a preference for the clean look, and it would have given you an excuse to have a servitor or two with buckets and sponges. But none the less, it looks good.

Great work, regardless of dirti/cleanliness! I guess Ultramarines have that self cleaning armour then (or bucket and sponge serfs as suggested by icn )!

I recently attempted dry brushing some turf pieces that needed a little adjustment in color, if you keep minimal paint on the brush you can easily tint the tufts of grass ect. without clumping or sticking together.

Neat and tidy. Hint with the arrow on the rhino;

Get some 1/4" strip plasticard and cut at 45 degrees about 5cm from the end. Use that in line with the centreline of the hatch to draw out (with a pencil) the top of the arrow. Use the square end against the side of the hatch to draw out horizontal, and use the width of the strip to draw the verticals.

Then it's just painting in the lines, and use the basecoat to tidy up a bit.

Ehh.. I'm actually quite happy with the arrow as is considering it was just straight freehand and it didn't take me very long. Still practicing and looking to improve so I'd like to use as few crutches as possible.

Get the thought that using correct tools is a 'crutch' out of your head. It's flawed thinking, and it will hurt your development in the long run.

Edit: Part of that development is knowing what tools to use, when, and how to make those tools if necessary.

Draw a long straight line on a flat surface with a ruler. If you want a consistent angle, measure it, mark it out. These aren't crutches, they're the right way of doing things, and draftsmen and artists have been doing them for centuries.
