Does anyone know what the biggest necron army is outside of the ones owned by games workshop?

I would be very surprised if that's a tracked statistic.

Is your whole army painted as well? I'm betting GW would probably feature that somewhere.

I was feeling pretty good about my 4k of necrons until the aptly named Necrons_FTW mentioned 40k worth of necrons. The neat thing is that 40k points is still only a small portion of what a tomb world could bring to bear Once fully awake. It is around the points two space marine chapters would be so that's pretty cool as well.

Constantly being negative doesn't make you seem erudite, it just makes you look like a curmudgeon.

About 85% of it is. I'm currently repainting all my warriors to match the colors of my newer stuff

Don't be discouraged. I've been collecting for about nine years. I started with 2000 points back at the start of fourth edition and have only been adding in bulk since sixth edition. It takes time and a lot of money and patience to get to where I'm at. I currently have around 14k points, but I'm doubling that amount this year

Why do you have so many points ( no rebuke intended ) ?
Does it have a purpose (like collecting a whole chapter) or is it just time passed and you acquired stuff ?

I mainly play apocalypse games. There's a yearly game that's held in my area where everyone bring up to 15k points and plays all day. Another reason is that a friend of mine agreed to play a 40k point game of apoc when I got up to that level. And of course bragging rights. Nothing like being able to say you have the biggest necron army in existence. And lastly, I always joked about putting a 200 model count infinite phalanx on a tomb citadel and daring people to assault it so I could roll 400 shots of overwatch.

Welcome to the "Insanely Large Army" club. As someone that has joined it a few times I can say that there is a satisfying feeling to it.

I have a pretty big Necron army myself (almost entirely metal). My carrying case is a brick when I have 300 metal miniatures in it.

Oh I don't doubt it. I currently have a 30 gallon Rubbermaid tote, a crusader case, one of the old gw cases, and a shoebox that house all my models. I'm about to replace the shoebox with another crusader case. If I could get my hands on more of those zig zag foam inserts, I'd probably be able to fill up a rolling 30 gallon toolbox with just the small models I have and the 15k points of models I'm planning on buying this year.

I love seeing large armies, but with two main caveats:

1) The army should be painted...anyone can horde plastic off eBay and claim X, Y and Z. More impressive if it's painted to an actual tabletop or better quality.

2) It should be purposeful. Now this is obviously a matter of taste, but it hurts me to see large armies which exist solely for the sake of being large. I like the idea of someone painting up a full Space Marine chapter for example, because it would allow them to play a number of different games - "Oh, I'm deploying my 1st company this game...all terminators" etc.

The larger an army gets the more you end up with units which never see the table (because of lack of paint, or they're on the bottom of the storage bin, etc.).

So if they're painted and they see gaming use, I'm 100% for it (particularly if you share the army with new players or attend large events, etc.).

I've been seriously considering buying a Crusader case. Or a KR WHS6. I've only got about 6k of dudes, but the Living Tomb formation is so ungainly to transport.

Do you have a recommendation? How much can the Crusader transport for Necrons?

My crusader case holds quite a bit. Was actually surprised when I got it. Mine holds about 60 warriors, 3 annihilation barges, 3 spiders, 12 tomb blades, 18 wraiths, 30 scarabs, 5 destroyers, 10 deathmarks, 10 immortals, 5 characters, and a handful of random models. It would hold more if I took out the wraiths and barges.

I'm just a fledgling Overlord myself, but as others have mentioned, when you get this whole thing painted, make sure to contact GW about it. You could easily make an Army of the Month feature with that kind of force!

I'll be sure to do that. I'm planning on buying about 15,000 points of models this year which will take me up to 30,000 base points. I'll be sure to send gw some pictures one I have everything painted and matching.

Wait what? Each person brings 15k points? And you play a game in under a day? I have played a 10k game and we barely finished in a full day! (Then again the guy I played against was a slow playing Ork player, those shooting phases... Never again)

I would be very surprised if your 40.000 point force was one of the biggest Necron armies in existence.

I play Eldar, I have about 35.000 points - didn't recount recently and I keep on buying for some reason...
The only other big army I know of is David Drinan's craftworld (about 100.000 points, painting in progress) but I'm sure there are others - not everyone wants to blog about their collection.

To me, what really matters in a force this size is consistency, structural balance as in 5 tanks for each super heavy tank or 5 flyers for a super heavy flyer for example, 3000 points of flyers for 30.000 points of forces ... whatever the ratio you pick it should make some sense - in that regard I'm missing a lot of Guardians lol.

Also, this is mostly Apocalypse driven and if I had no hope of playing it, I would probably stop collecting more.

I agree with Morgoth. I'm always more impressed by a balanced, logically assembled large army than the current obsession with huge super-heavies, titans, etc.

This is not a slight to the 40K community but it's not uncommon to see normal sized armies heavily slewed in one direction, vs. what you'd probably expect based on the fluff.

It's quite reasonable - how does it clock in at 40.000 points with so few models ? Are the citadels so expensive ?

Also, what I like about armies that size, is that you still don't have enough models to field any competitive force.

For example, I only have about 45 jetbikes, which might be short on scatbike spam, and just 20 Warp Spiders (10 of which are the russian dynamic ones, don't want to buy more until GW releases a better sculpt), when I should probably have 30+ Warp Spiders.
And still zero real Night Spinners (only Fire Prism count-as) and zero War Walkers (I'll get around to it some day...) for more friendly lists.

On the other hand, there's a good third of Apoc stuff, none of which would be taken in a competitive list.

I'm not up to forty yet. Once I buy the stuff in the right column, I'll be up to 30k. After that, I'll probably buy a bunch of tomb blades and random other things as I need them to get up to 40k.

I reckon the largest army in the world could quite easily be Dave's chaos stuff from MWG otherthan obviously Gws own stuff if they keep everything they build and paint.

Facts are chains that bind perception and fetter truth. For a man can remake the world if he has a dream and no facts to cloud his mind.

I doubt that, his video from 2014 says 34.000 points, that's about one third of WCWDB and about 60% of what he's already gotten painted.

I personally think there are other very large collections out there nobody knows about.

Roughly 10,000 points here, on a quick count.

200 warriors - metal
100 warriors - plastic
100 immortals - metal
50 scarab bases - metal & plastic
7 assorted lords- metal
50 destroyers - metal
10 heavy destroyers - metal conversions
2 monoliths
2 C'tan
20 Deathmark
20 Pariah
100 flayed ones - metal
10 wraiths - metal and plastic
3 canoptek scarabs
1 doom scythe (painting in progress)

Not going to argue the points total - 3 minute zoom through the codex and rounding up or down.

Theme is original Necron fluff - regiments of inhuman robots, uncaring. Still like the original self destructing scarab rules.
