in which formation would i find the rules to make a riptide wing?
i have codex tau, farsight enclave and montka/kayun books.
played an opponent that used a unit of 3 riptides, saying one was the HQ
a unit of 3 ghost keels, a unit of 4 stealth suits, and allied with necrons
taking 2 units of 6 wraiths. all i want to know is where can i find a formation
that does not require an HQ that allows 3 or more riptides in a unit.
any help would be useful.

Riptide Wing: Mont'ka P.80
Riptide HQ: the Eight, FSE softcover (printed 2016) P. 68
Unit of 3 Riptides, current TE Codex (printed 2015, blue cover) P. 91
I think that you got snowed. the 8 costs just shy of 1500 points and cannot be taken piecemeal anymore, as it could in the first FSE supplement. Unbound, it certainly is possible, but my feeling is your opponent pulled one over on you.

'Tis in Mont'ka I believe. If you've got all 4 books, it should have been a simple enough task to glance through all the formations, especially since you know the name of what you're looking for.

No it's not.
Also, op, do you really need to come here and type out a question when you could just flip through your books instead? Or use Google? Is this really a question that hasn't been answered before or one that discussion can build around?

Yep, riptide wing is in Montka, only reason I bought it, since everything else literally is in FSE or Tau codex. And if you do own all 3 then it is seriously easy to find. Like flip through and BAM 3 riptides standing there.
As per rules in BRB, if you have no character, then you choose one model to be your warlord, however he will not get a warlord trait.
The list you just described is unbound though, as there is no way to get a ghost keel and 1 unit of stealth suits in that list without going unbound.

As stated Riptide wing is in Mont´ka. Riptide wing requires 3 units of riptides. each unit can have 3 riptides in each so making 9 riptides.
If this is all that was in his army then the army is unbound (not an issue in itself).
With out any characters in his army then he can choose any model to be his "WARLORD" (Not his HQ. Significant difference to be pointed out. This model may not have a warlord trait as he isn´t a character.)

Really he did nothing wrong. You don't like it move on. It's not like he has changed your life some how by posting this. A lot of times, Googlefu doesn't work for me so I come on Dakka to ask questions. Lots of times people can look through their books and because of multiple page flipping a lot of times it's staring you in the face and people can miss it. Pages stick, you double flipped a page and thinking you went page by page. So many reasons why someone could have missed it.

None of what your opponent played was a real formation.
3 individual riptides can be a formation - riptide wing
3 riptides in 1 unit are just a unit of riptides
3 ghost keels in a unit can be taken as an elite choice
he'd need 2 more stealth suits to take the optimized stealth team - 1 unit of ghostkeels, 2 units of stealth suits
2 units of 6 wraiths are not a formation.
Sounds like he just played unbound.
Next time ask to see his list. Also those armies are not battle brothers so I hope he used this rule when dealing with his 2 different armies.
Allies of Convenience:
• Treated as enemy models that cannot be targeted, so are affected by attacks that effect ‘enemy’ units.
• Cannot move within 1” of each other.
• Cannot benefit from any battle brother abilities
I believe any model can be considered a warlord but would not get to reroll warlord traits or get a warlord trait at all. I dunno don't have book for that.

Don't just stop at the list. Let him show you the codex/codices that lets him do this.
