Subject: Sort of simple question about Tau for Tau players...

So there is a Tau player that I gamed against in a mega battle with about 6 players total. 1000 points each side and we didn't allow formations for this game. Only 1 CAD.
....I don't have the Tau codex so here's my question. Is it possible to run a Tau army using only battle suits in a battle forged army? I cant remember but I think there might have been a few drones too...It looked like he
didn't run any troops, but I've never gotten to look at the Tau dex, so I'm kind of at a loss as to how this was possible.

Yes, if you run a Farsight Enclave list. Bonding Knife Ritual is mandatory on all units that may take it, and Crisis Suits become troops.

Peregrine - If you like the army buy it, and don't worry about what one random person on the internet thinks.

Why didn't you ask to see his codex? If you're skittish about accusing someone of cheating, just say something like: "Wow, Suits as Troops??? That's crazy cool! How do you unlock that?"
And then he'll tell you and you can say, "Farsight? Sounds neat, can I see his entry?"
And then you'll get the book and you can check what he said.
Simple. And instead of being a little and not doing anything about it, you can check right then and there. And if it's illegal you'll have made a fairer game. And if it's not you'll have learned something about Tau.
It's basically your responsibility to do this before harm comes from it, rather than much after the fact when no one can do anything about it. Step up!

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all

To expand on the other comments...
The Tau Empire faction have a number of different rules sources. The rules that allow you to take Crisis Suits as a Troops choice require that you take a "Farsight Enclaves" Detachment, which just means ANY Tau Empire Detachment using the rules presented in either the Farsight Enclaves book or the Mont'ka book. Mont'ka has the more updated rules, but in typical GW fashion, both are still available, so both are arguably still legal. The rules in Codex: Tau Empire alone don't allow you to field Crisis Suits as Troops.
I THINK that at least one of the Troops choices in the Detachment has to have at least three Crisis Suits in it. You can't get away with two single Crisis Suits as your two Troops choices.
But yeah... if you aren't sure about something, simply ask to see your opponent's rules. Everyone should carry their rules with them.

Ok the 3 suit thing is something new to me. Hmmm may have to ask my mate about that one. Seen many times a tau farsight enclave CAD only 2-3 single suits as troops

A FSE CAD can have just 3 Crisis suits in total, a Commander and two Monat Troops, ever since the Crisis suit squad size changed to 1-. A Drone Control Commander with Flamer Crisis Troops are a great way to support Stormsurges and Riptides.

That's gone with the new FSE and Mont'ka books.

Fair enough. I haven't actually played for awhile. It's really hard to keep up on the rules when you need to buy half a dozen rule books for your faction.
