With C:IA, Servitors were introduced into the Cult Mechanicus as an Elite choice (just as an Enginseer was introduced as a valid HQ).
Minimum number of models per unit is 1 in the Elite slot.
The big hindrance of the War Convo is it's restrictive nature makes you extremely limited on what you can bring.
The Skitarii Maniple does not allow any extra units.
The Knights are too expensive to add more than a 2nd Knight.
The Cult Mechanicus part has very expensive troops, Heavy Support and nigh useless Elites in the form of the Electro Priests.
Effectively, getting a high unit count for the Canticles is nigh impossible. You can squeeze in about 10 , maybe 11 units before you run out of wiggle room, leaving not much casualties to take before you drop down on the Canticles.
In come the servitors.
For the price of 2 Melta Bombs you get a unit each, counting towards canticles you can equip with a free HB, PC or MM and hide them out of LoS due to their fragility.
This adds 4 units to the roster for a very, very low price, upping your canticle count by 40%!
You can maintain the highest level of Canticles way more easily that way (and with Cawl, a 2nd turn of 4++ for the entire fething army is no joke) as long as 4 other units (and Mr Invincible Cawl) are still on the board.
War Convo got even more cheese.
I need 4 servitors now.

You also need to take a ton of Enginseers. It's still nice, but you're actually looking at 25 points per canticles (40 + 10), not 10. Still not bad at all.

Why? Servitors are Cult Mech units so can be taken on their own in the relevant detachment and the War Convocation gives them Canticles.

I think he's refering to preventing the servitors from sitting doing nothing for a turn, an Enginseer babysitter prevents this.

Nah. You need a maxed out convocation to get Canticles on them, or else you need to take them as the mini detachment from IA. If a War Convocation isn't maxed out, then they don't get Canticles.

Ah, my bad.

You are thinking of Grand Convocation from Fall of Cadia. War Convocation is a detachment from a White Dwarf issue. It gives Canticles and free upgrades to everything.
