Problem with Grotsnik is that it costs alone as much as 3 meganobz and a painboy.
I have found Grotsnik to be a great force multiplier given Rampage almost always triggers with MANZ being a low model count unit. He also adds another PK to the group something that other Painboyz don't do.
*Edit
I get your point that Grotsnik costs a lot but not really when you consider Bullyboyz requires 15 MANZ to get that Fearless. Again, if you don't want to invest in that many models to get that buff go for the Mad Dok.
Well I like grotsnik, and I would love to field him more often but point wise it's not convenient, the mad dok and 3 meganobz cost 280 points but you have only four models that can be instant killed by 3 s8 and a single s10 shot. The bullyboyz costs 600 points, no FNP, but comes with 15 bodies and 15 pks, not to mention that you would have 3 killy units to dispose and not just one. It's awfully expensive in terms of money of course, and not that easy to scratch built, but it's probably the best unit that orks can field, especially if you're not allowed to bring two CADs or forgeworld stuff, like in my area.

Does anybody think meganobz on foot could ever work? Painfully slow, but with a screening unit of chaff for cover and bubble wrapping, a painboy and a lucky stick warboss to tank S8/9 hits they aren't completely defenceless against lascannons and the like
A unit of five or six is about what you'd pay for 30 boyz with a power klaw nob.

It's not gonna work as every ap2 weapons would target them. You can give those meganobz a 5+ cover and a 5+ FNP but still a lot of shots to take, and any s8 hits instant kill them, negating FNP. Furthemore they would engage close combat after 3 turns at least so even with lucky cover saves rolls or FNP they're gonna die before getting into battle. Best way to protect meganobz is to give them a transport so the opponent is forced to destroy it before hurting the meganobz. A trukk costs 35 points with a ram and is more efficient than a painboy to increase their survivability. 30 boyz on foot are going to die pretty easily too, 3 blasts and mob rule can kill half of them in a single turn. Transports are crucial in 40k nowadays.

Generally, yeah, too much ranged ap2 and just range in general. They can not run so they're only moving 6" a turn. They'd have finally reached the front opponent's deploy zone literally at the end of the game. I definitely would not be picking the lucky stikk warboss to tank lascannons. What is he re-rolling? He'd have no saves! lol. If this unit has MANz, DLS/MA boss, painboy, and a kff mek that unit is gonna be like 500 points, never see combat, and spend the game trying to hit something with their 6 shootas cuz they ain't getting close to anything with a run move. It's the same problem with killa kans. 500 points is like a blitz brigade, almost a bullyboy formation, or a buzzgob stompa.
The worst part about is that it lets the opponent take their shot. Warp spiders, wolfen, LR demolishers, certain MCs, wraiths, thirsters, etc. would all actually very much like to meet and greet you. If you're on foot you're basically at their mercy. The transport is as much a defensive measure as an offensive and utilitarian one.
I don't even want to imagine deploying the MANz on foot vs Tau.

the battlewagon usually dies turn 1 so they are on foot and do well Automatically Appended Next Post: get that KFF in that unit or in range at least, as well

I love mine. Never had a game where I've used them and they haven't caused significant bother for an opponent. I like to stick them in a trukk with a ram, give one a skorcha, and fire them up the field to make a nuisance of themselves. Going to start painting up a second unit of them soon.

However this isn't due to liking them tactically, but rather because I just like MegaNobz. However with the Bullyboyz formation it does solve their leadership problem and they have more wounds than terminators, so I can see them ripping and tearing through armies that don't have much in the way of mobility (say, gunlines).
Main reason is I cannot justify paying somewhere in the neighbourhood of 25 bucks for a model I need 15-30 copies of and I haven't been able to find any on second-hand markets. If there was a cheap, good looking alternative then I would jump on the wagon faster than the Boyz can.
You could use Ironjaw Brutes. They're a good deal cheaper than Meganobz and there are two more models in the kit.

Their size is a bit off, they're actually smaller than they look so you'd definitely have to bulk them up a bit before reaching the size of the current mega nobz. Luckily, Ork players are rarely at a loss for spare PK's...

Bully Boyz are one of the best units in the Ork arsenal. Them, alongside Warbikers and Biker Bosses with the Lukky Stikk, Lootas, and... Eh, maybe Burnas in the right circumstances?
Most of the Ork formations just aren't very good, but Fear, Fearless, WS5, and FNP make them into a truly devestating little bundle of hate that require dedicated firepower in order to kill. If your opponent is lacking in massed AP2 and melee deathstars that can tank hits and dish it out, then Bully Boyz are going to mop up the floor. (Yes, those counters are fairly common, but... Eh, Orks aren't doing so hot right now. Take what we can get.)

MANz in a trukk is never a bad thing. Huge bullet magnets that either draw fire and die or get stuck in an smash in some faces. Not designed to beat dedicated melee units packing good invuln saves or at initative AP2 but stuff with AP3 or worse bounces right off of them while unwieldy AP2 tends to result in mass death on both sides which MANz tend to trade well considering they have a lot of attacks and are not very points intensive for a unit of 3 to 5 (don't need more than 5 in a squad). Always take 1 Killsaw per squad as the ability to VERY reliably crack open AV 13/14 is worth it plus it also gives +1 attack at the cost of a TL shoota (who needs that?). Always give them a trukk as they are dirt cheap transport and if their transport gets shot out from under them then send them another trukk (dem boyz can foot slog it, da Nobz need dem-selves a ride).

True, never tried Meganobz in a trukk I confess. Never even thought about it.
