I've learned a lot about modeling, painting, and the game here. You all are a wealth of knowledge for a re-returning player. I started the game in the 3rd edition, left returned in the 5th, left again and am coming back once again with the cobbled together forces of White Scars and Raven Guard I have. I've also been thinking about starting a second army of Necrons.
Reading all of the news, rumors about the 8tth make-over, and angst about what GW will do next bums me out.
I'm a glass half full kinda guy. So my question is what can I look forward to and what makes you have hope for this hobby?
Cheer me up please!

My Names Great Big Tree, and I've been playing since 2nd edition.
I really liked the shift from 2nd to 3rd. I did not enjoy playing a convoluted mess of a game that 2nd edition was. 7th feels like it's in that spot where 2nd was... too much crazy going on.
So the thing to look forward to, is either getting a game that's less of a hot mess, or completing my rules re-write and playing my own game. If GW can't make a decent rules set this time, I'm making my own. And I'll share it, so you can enjoy it to. Either way, win win.

I go with the flow. And hoard all of the old publications so that with my tiny group of friends we can still play older editions of 40k. It also makes army collecting easy since 40k models rarely appreciate in value and people are in general quicker to cast aside older models in favour of new ones.

Rumors are just that, rumors. We have no proof that 8th is going to be an Age of Sigmar level change. It might be the incremental upgrade we need! GW’s been doing a lot of things right lately, they might clean up their mess. And even if the AoS is, they seem to be patching that up pretty good and can learn from mistakes there. There have been drastic edition changes before and me made it through.
There will always be cool models.
There is a lot of negativity and hate on the internet. You can ignore most of it. If it’s getting to you here on Dakka, there are forums where there is less of it. Painting and background are pretty safe. N&R is getting a bit bad lately.

1. There will always be new shiny models to model and paint as much as you want
2. With those armies you can be sure you'll never have to worry about being left behind

Id personally be really really sad if they remove, BS,WS, S, T values, that would be my ultimate nightmare. If it happens with fixed dice rolls, im gonna feel the hurt. But fact is... I love the warhammer 40k universe too much to let it go. So im buying what i need. (Leman Russ from forgeworld is on his way to lead my Space Wolves and im super stoked!)

fething awesome models. Most of the releases in the last few years have been excellent. Only a few duds. Sadly, Guilliman looks to be a dud. However, the FW one is excellent!
I will spend 100 times more painting and modeling than I ever will playing, so rules balance, while annoying, doesn't bother me.
As for the timeline moving forward, I'm OK with it.
I enjoyed the Gathering Storm I: Fall of Cadia. I'm looking forward to the next few books.
8th edition will hopefully streamline some of the rules. While I prefer 5th edition to 7th edition by far, I don't hate 7th edition. I've had some fun games, mostly Horus Heresy.
People will always complain. There are folks on this board that haven't played 40k in 10 years that still bitch and moan. At some point, you just move on.

I really like AoS but people in my group want the old insane hard to play 8th ed fantasy bs.
7th ed is balanced in that anyone can bring counters and it's nearly impossible to bring an all comers list. LVO proved that, a really good player recognizes the meta has a GIANT weakness and he exploited the hell out of it in a fantastically awesome way.
I think if GW made units less stats based and more datasheet based it would speed things up drastically. It's ok to have a bunch of rules, but when you add on top of that a million other charts and tables it gets to be a hassle.
If you want to have a ball playing, play KDK. They are pretty competitive, no one will accuse you of cheese, and you pretty much skip two phases of the game which speeds up game play.

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

Well, GW have said they're not blowing up the Universe.
The rules do need something of a diet. Not necessarily the extent that Warhammer received, but definitely a good tidy up and re-centralisation.

I would say there's a lot to be optimistic about. 1. They've been running fresh narratives that have real impact on the universe. In effect, we went from "cold war" to "all out war." This creates a lot of interesting scenarios and fresh rules for the game, as well as COOL new miniatures and units. Celestine, Greyfax - I built these miniatures and they're top notch quality. I will be pre-ordering Guilliman, because (a) he's a primarch and that's awesome and (b) the model looks really nice, and i can't wait to play it. It will be neat to see Guilliman charge Magnus on the table. Primarch rumble! 2. On that note, look at the recent Cadia formations. They pull from multiple different factions within the imperium. It stands to reason there will be more of these, and more ways to play your army. For instance, with Guilliman, it's entirely possible there's a formation which unifies multiple loyalist factions. Maybe a formation which includes both Ultramarines and Blood Angels? Maybe a formation which has Eldar and Loyalists? Suddenly 2v2 is possible. "You play the BA faction and i'll play the UM faction," and just cap at your normal 1500/1850. 3. The renewed effort on the storylines, coupled with the fact that 8th edition will come out soon, suggests also rule changes (every edition has come with some form of change). However, they've been releasing numerous units as a part of this campaign. I highly doubt they're going to invalidate the entire Cadia campaign rulesets, or make sweeping changes that fundamentally alter the game at a core level - in other words, i would expect improvements and tweaks, but not "age of sigmarification" that people are panicking over. 4. Increased point cost of units, and formations leveraging troops, leads me to believe that the army sizes will be decreasing in terms of units, which speeds up gameplay and lets people field really cool units. And less units makes certain unit types viable. For instance, you drop off a billion pounds of DAKKA and suddenly in a "few units" game you could imagine terminators with their 2+ saves being actually cool and useful.

Honestly, give dakkadakka a break. Infact, give the internet a break for 40k. Full of naysayers and negative nancies. Don't get me wrong, I don't mean everyone, far from that, but there is a lot of it. I only just came back from doing the same thing, and it was worth it.

Because GW removed all reasons to actually take them. Like with Chaos, where the benefit is outweighed by the cost.

My advise wait it out. Gamesworkshop has a chance to delete anything from the game right now well except Ultramarines they will remain the main focus of the universe. Also if you are into good guys always win evil is there just to show how awesom something else is well GW is going in the right direction for you. In the last 2 years in aos they stripped chaos nude they all just wear loincloths now and gave it to the god good guys.
All books read the same ( big bad monster man who lived for thousands of years who the wolrd fears. Good guy shows up and shoots him this good guy is super awesom.) There is no real threat in 40k or aos just pointless bloat for fan fiction.

Uhh, well, some good news you may not have heard...
GW's major jerkishness for the past decade or so is at an end.
They kicked out their CEO, Tom Kirby, and a LOT of stuff got better.
Sisters of Battle may finally be getting their much-needed plastic infantry this year.
Communication with fans has increased MASSIVELY.
GW's FAQs/Errata are being written only AFTER taking in massive amounts of questions from the players.
It's likely that the next edition of WH40k rules will be massively improved.
The stagnant lore may be shaken up by advancing the plot. Hopefully the new management will mean that no armies are squatted in the process.
New character kits are in plastic, even the blister pack monopose ones.
In short, things ARE getting better. You picked a really good time to come back. Automatically Appended Next Post: corpuschain wrote:OK, I get that. I still find it hard to believe that people aren't even bothering to model the banners on, even thought it's not worth paying the points!
