Subject: Salamander on a Snowy Planet?

I get a little tired seeing everyone base Salamander on lava. Is there any background lore that would support Salamanders snowy bases? Maybe they had some campaign or mission on some other planet.

Salamanders have been around for over 10,000 years, I'm guessing they've fought in the snow at least once.
Were you looking for a specific piece of fluff to theme them around?

Well, millions of planets, with various atmospheric conditions, each orbiting a star of varied size, at various distances, spinning at various speeds, on various axes... The prevalence of snowy winters is probably fairly high.
Specifically though, maybe the Third War for Armageddon?

Ya I was looking for some specifics. Depending on the scenario maybe try to add some aspects of the fluff in there like Tyranid or Ork corpse or something like that.

Nothing specific, but volcanic activity specifically creates mountain ranges. Aside from the Space Wolves and Imperial Fists (Ice World homeworld) they've probably got the most plausible homeworld for a snowy base...

For a specific incident, the Salamanders fought alongside the Space Wolves of Grimhildr Skanefeld on Lykaar during the winter period, against Orks intent upon taking slaves and Promethium. Source: Prometheus Requiem by Nick Kyme pg 415 in the Salamanders Omnibus.
Aside from that, I can't recall any more. The Salamanders are too often typified by lava bases, but they fight as varied campaigns as any other Chapter.
Whilst, Nocturne does have loads of tectonic and volcanic activity, the largest (and hence highest) mountain is Mount Deathfire - which most certainly has no snow on it (The clues in the name I guess). I suppose other less volcanic ranges could potentially feature snow, but I would think the overall heat of the planet, the radiation from it's proximity to the system's star prevents snow from forming. That said, the one time it is known for Nocturne to be cold is after the Time of Trial (Once every 15 Terran years). After the intense heat, volcanic activity and destruction of the Time of Trial, a terrible winter sets in where people freeze in droves, unable to cope with a cold climate they are unaccustomed to. In that case, a snow base and Nocturne setting is perfectly fine.

Not sure why they're always on lava bases either, Nocturne has a bunch of ash deserts as well.

Put them on whatever you want. I'm inclined to agree that it's kinda repetitive and boring, myself. n0t_u has a good idea-- it'd be pretty easy to make a desert or ash desert base for them.

The salamanders also like all chapters defend a certain area of space against enemies.
That could easily include a winter planet that's also protectorate but also maybe a artic training combat centre.
Marines train for all from void to winter, deserts, under water, and urban warfare etc.

They were on armageddon so bases with dead orcs is very viable. However you would have issues with snow from that perspective. grass plains and city would be no issue.

Side note: I kind of want a story where a Space Wolf visits Nocturne during the Time of Trial. "What are you pups whining about? It's a perfectly balmy day if you don't mind the hail! Now Fenris, that's cold!"

Why not put them on snowy lava bases? Like snow covered rock with lava running through them and the snow around the edges of the lava can be melting via water effects! As mentioned above volcanic activity creates mountain ranges which would make me think there could be snow covered volcanoes and snowy lava regions as well.

I take it that's all before the winter ends and the Wolf has promptly melted into a quivering pile of steaming goo due to the insane heat and radiation of Nocturne - you know, the same stuff Salamanders stroll around in their shirt-sleeves. Or perhaps they'll just pant like tired puppies...
