So, with the Hosnian system (and a good chunk of the fleet with it) destroyed and starkiller base destroyed (with a sizeable chunk? of the first orders military) It looks like the gloves are coming off and the Republic and First Order are gonna throw down. Considering they (even though the last 2 death stars got it) had no idea that starkiller base could be destroyed, what do you all think the First Orders chances are ?

Id say it really depends on how large the First Order actually is. They took over several systems didnt they? And I doubt they called everyone to the Starkiller base for its big reveal. So Id say if they are still sizable then itll be a fight for sure. If not.....well lets hope the Republic starts building giant moon bases with vent shafts that lead to its total destruction. Barring that the Republic would be too big and well established

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices. |

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

This is galactic civil war we are talking here...
But yeah not knowing how much the First Order had to begin with or where they are hiding, other than the unknown regions...I would like to think the Republic would have the guts to fight back and not just fold up.

First Order are looking like being crushed.
In the accompanying novels, The Republic itself didn't have a large military. That was a deliberate choice, as they didn't want to simply be The Empire by any other name.
Instead, individual systems have their own standing forces, and the Republic Fleet was more support/policing - a way to tip the balance should it be necessary.
But with Starkiller taking out the Hosnia system, the First Order have committed an atrocity. And with the subsequent loss of Starkiller Base, they've also lost the ironfist necessary to avoid a mass ganking by Republic Systems finally seeing them as the threat General Organa always maintained they were.
Now, I suspect neither side really has the resources for a war anywhere near Clone War or Galactic Civil War in scale.
The First Order are now limited. If they attempt to take other systems, they're far more likely to meet a united front - and they can only engage so many at once - and it does look like they're horrifically outnumbered in terms of loyal systems.
Me? I just can't wait until December!

I'm not so sure the First Order is suffering from a lack of men or materiel. They, aparently set up major bases of operations in the Unknown Regions, have the support of several Republic Systems and Senators that are Pro-Imperial and going off the guides that came out, have a fleet made up of Star Destroyers that require the truly obscene crew size of 55,000 Enlisted men, 19,000 Officers and have a complement of 8,000 Storm Troopers.
And Resistance Intelligence believes the FO has even bigger ships than that.

A lot would depend on if the Republic systems come together as a unified force, or fall to infighting.

It's a sad statement about Episode 7 that I can actually see this as the plot of Episodes 8 and 9. :(

Its impossible to say how big of a threat the FO is. However the NR defeated the Empire, and FO are dissident fragments of that correct? Therefore they could not be as strong, absent the NR somehow having is GDP shrink considerably. Logically, the moment after the FO shoots Starkiller the NR leadership -in a "secure location" declares war which would lead to them bringing their combined forces wiping out the FO or, building fleets that will in turn wipe out the FO. The Empire was massively powerful because it could draw up the resources of the Republic. Assuming the NR makes up the same worlds then the NR would have the same productive capacity: ie the the New Order would get hammered like a wimpy guard standing between Vader and the secret plans... Frankly I'd rather see more of THAT war...
