So I actually used to have a thread on this forum for my first army, which were Nurgle CSM. But then I lost access to the email i used to sign up with that account, and had to make a new account, and then my modeling and painting kinda fell by the wayside for a while for a bunch of different reasons. But now I'm back and I've decided to keep a log on here in hopes that it'll keep me going. I'll post pictures of the Nurgle CSM that I made years ago once I find all the pictures on my computer, but for now I'll just give you guys a look at what I'm working on now.

I currently have two armies in progress: Word Bearers, and Dark Eldar which I'm calling the Cabal of Empty Night (Cookie if you get the reference there). The Dark Eldar aren't painted, and I'm working on painting the Word Bearers right now, so that's what you'll get pics of. I only have access to my iphone's camera at the moment, so the picture quality isn't the best.

Right now, I'm working on the first squad of chaos marines for this army. You'll notice that I converted them by attaching CSM torsos to the legs from Warriors of Chaos. I saw someone else do that on the internet a while ago and liked the idea, although they modified them with GS and cutting so that they looked like they were actually wearing power armor greaves instead of leather boots. But I was lazy so I didn't do that.

Here they are with all the heads picked out. Though I did change around the one on the far left, since I decided i wanted to save that particular head for something else.I wanted to give each one a different head, and I had enough bits to do just that.

Here they are when I primed them about a year ago

And this is after I finally started painting them again, last week. I'm really regretting putting them on those bases for two reasons. First, because I realized that it's a pain to try and paint around them to do the detail on the bases and on the legs. Second, because of the change to the slightly larger 32mm bases that GW made recently. But, nothing I can do about it now.

Here's the Aspiring Champion, partially painted

Here's one of them after I started on the metallics

A group shot after I got most of the metallics done

And a close up from that group shot

I've done all the metallics by this point, and touched up the Khorne Red on the armor where other colors got on it, as well as the yellow on the shoulderpad flames, and the brown on the boots. Next up is another little bit of touch up for the metallics, followed by washes, and then highlighting.

I'm thinking that I need a second metallic color for some of the details on the weapons, like the various arrows shapes and stuff. I was thinking of using Warplock Bronze, but I'm open to other suggestions. Thoughts?

In addition to the CSM, I've also converted a Dark Apostle, though I've been having some second thoughts about it. Namely, that I really should've kept it in separate parts so it'd be easier to paint.

(Note: I have since filled in the gap between the fist and the arm with greenstuff.)

And here's his backpack and his Combi-melta, which may or may not end up attached at all.

I've also got a squad of Raptors in progress. Nothing really special here. The only difference from the basic raptors is that I gave them Word Bearers Shoulder Pads. Which, now that I can't get anymore and I only seem to have 4 left instead of the 5 I should have, I kind of regret, since my 2nd squad of CSM won't have a full set of them.

Looking good! I really like the Dark Apostle conversion, what models did you use for that?

It's not too late to change the bases, if you've used superglue you should be able to 'pop' minis off the base, if plastic glue you'll have to cut the base off. Inconvenient, but totally do-able if you wanted to go down that road.

I used mostly this Chaos Lord, but the head and the mace are from some Chaos Knights, I think. The fist is from the Raptors/warp talons kit, and the pistol that I mounted on the fist I'm not sure about. I got it from a box of older bits I bought off ebay. The brazier on the backpack is from the Battlemage kit, I think.

And yeah, i used plastic glue, which is the main problem with re-basing them.

Another part of the army, one that still needs a little work, is my squad of Obliterators. I converted them from the Ogryns that came out with the other Astra Militarum stuff, along with a bunch of other bits I had lying around, some plasticard, and some guitar string for the cabling. I'm particularly pleased with these. All that really needs to be done before I paint them is some greenstuff on the areas where the cables go into the armor, to make it look more like a part of the mini.

Update: I have pried most of the minis off their bases, so that I can rebase them on some 32mm bases instead. I haven't done that with the Raptors, because they're glued down much more securely, what with being glued to the actual base, rather than the plasticard on top of the base. Can't decide whether to get some plain bases and do the theme myself, or just splurge on the Sector Imperialis bases.

I also haven't bothered removing the Forgefiend from its base just yet. Anyone know what size base it uses?

Forgefiend definitely needs another coat of primer.

And, as a bonus, here are two non-Word Bearers models i made a while ago.

First up we have a Night Lords Chaos Lord, complete with one of the (vastly superior) old chaos jump packs. I swear, one of these days I'm gonna learn how to cast parts out of resin just so I can make more of those.

And next we have an old Iron Warriors Warsmith. I messed up on his backpack, so he doesn't have that yet.

Anyone got any ideas for a good basing theme, if I don't go with the Sector Imperialis? I found an old base I made as an experiment that was supposed to be brick/cobblestone, made by cutting up sprue into a bunch of pieces and using them as bricks. That's easy enough, but I'm kinda hoping for something a little more interesting. That's why I want to get the Sector Imperialis bases, since they're more than just rock and sand or whatever.

Well, I decided to order all the Sector Imperialis bases I'd need, plus a blank one for the Forgefiend. Everything's been removed from its base without much trouble.

Apart from the Forgefiend, that is. I'd forgotten that when I first put the Forgefiend together, I originally put the back hooves on wrong, and had to cut them off and reposition them. So I've gotta re-attach them. Not a major issue, thankfully.

So I realized that Squad 1 was missing something, and luckily I had 1 more set of Chaos Warrior legs. So here's the rough mockup of Squad 1's Icon Bearer, in case I decide to use one.

Couldn't find the actual Chaos Marines icon bearer arm, so I cut off the forearm from a bolt pistol arm, and used the one from the Chaos Warriors kit. I'll have to do the same thing with Squad 2, unless i find the icon bearer arm.

Ok so I've been busy with other stuff but I'm going to do some more painting today. But I've run into a separate problem. I'm almost out of the wire I use for pinning, and I can't seem to find the right size. I don't know what gauge it is, just that it fits in the holes drilled by the old citadel drill. It's larger than 18 gauge, and none of the paperclips I've bought have been quite large enough. Anyone know where a good place to get wire is?

Ok, so Squad 1 is almost finished now. I just need to do some highlighting on the metalics, finish the eyes (which means I need to go pick up an artificer brush or some other really small brush), and finish the backpacks.

Here's the color scheme I'm probably gonna go with for the backpacks. Khorne red for the body of it, with Leadbelcher for the arms and any details, and a wash of Nuln Oil over the whole thing.

And here's a look at the Aspiring Champion. This first pic is from a few days ago, and the other two are from today. I finally got a better desk lamp, so hopefully that'll make my pictures come out better.

And here's the rest of the squad

There are a few errors I made when painting these that I should be able to improve on for the next squad. I think I might've used too much Nuln Oil in places, and the edge highlights need work. Part of me wants to do another group of conversions like these, with the chaos warrior legs. But I've already got all the parts for the next squad, so no point spending money on that right now.

I completed the squad yesterday, getting the bases done and the backpacks painted and glued on. All in all, I'm pretty pleased with how they turned out.

I think I'll take a break from Word Bearers, though, just to paint something with a different color scheme next. I've got a few options sitting around to choose from.

So I decided to take a break from the Word Bearers and work on the Morghast Archai that I got several years ago. Like an idiot, I glued pretty much the whole thing together before I started painting. (I would slap past-me upside the head if I could), so there's some areas that are a little tricky. I'm missing a couple paints that I need for highlighting the ghost-y areas.

That is a great model, and your paintjob is nicely on its way, should look great. I too, am often over enthusiastic on assembling models before painting, no way you can separate some of the problematic parts ?

I thought about it, but it'd probably be more trouble than it's worth. I do have the head and the weapon separate for this one (well, the head's been glued onto the painted one) and for the other one, which I haven't started on yet. I'm thinking of priming the other one white, and experimenting with different ways of painting the bone and stuff.

But that'll have to wait, because I've decided to finally get around to painting my Dark Eldar, which I have dubbed the Kabal of the Empty Night. I'm thinking of going with a dark purple color scheme, with some hints of blue in places. Here's the model I'm using as a test piece, since the pose gives me access to the whole body without much obstruction

In addition to the Kabal of Empty Night, there will be Incubi from the Shrine of Slowest Terror. Or at least, there WOULD be incubi if Games Workshop would restock the damn things in the webstore! I mean come on, either release plastic ones or restock the resin ones. I'm not a fan of finecast, but for the Incubi, I'll take it.

I'll also be converting Wracks and Grotesques, once I get some new Greenstuff. The Wracks i'm making out of Empire Flagellants and Bloodletters, and the Grotesques are going to be based on the Crypt Horrors/Crypt Flayers/Vargheist kit, with various bits from the Talos and other Dark Eldar stuff added on.

(A cookie to anyone who can spot the references in the names!)

Here's a look at the Archon, who I think is coming along pretty well.

Primed, with the head I'll be using

And with the painting partly done

Unfortunately, I've run into a slight problem. See, I decided to transfer all of my paints from their GW pots into eyedropper bottles, because it makes it easier to get it out in the amounts I want. But I think i might've used too much water in some of them, because some of the paints aren't going on properly. So i'll have to figure out a way to fix that.

Well, the Archon is almost complete. I just have to do a little more work on the head (Can't decide whether to paint the hair or just leave it black) and then figure out the best way to attach it. Might have to use some GS to sculpt a better neck. I'm particularly happy with how the blue glow from the cracks/runes or whatever in the armor came out. Though now I can't help wondering how it'd look if I'd used red instead. Ah well.

So I decided to get myself the Visarch off of ebay, since I don't feel confident in my ability to paint cloth and other subtle stuff that I'd have to do with the other two members of the eldar triumvirate. I just finished priming the various parts, and Now I'm trying to decide what colors to paint him. I could do the canon color scheme, but on the other hand I kinda want to try something different. I'm thinking he might look good in a dark blue color scheme. Thoughts?

So I decided to just go with the official color scheme for the Visarch, more or less. I don't have any Wild Rider Red, so I used Wazdakka red for the highlights instead. I have no idea how people manage to paint all the spirals on the armor without getting paint on the areas around them.

Here's the Visarch and his base. I decided to try and make something Eldar-themed, inspired by some stuff I saw when I did a Google Image Search for "eldar Bases". Still needs a bit more work to clean it up, but I'm happy with how it turned out.

Here's the base on its own

and here's a side view of the Visarch.

At this point, all I have left to do is to paint all the little details like the soulstones all over his armor, and then the sword, and to paint the base. I ran out of black Primer, so I suppose we're going to have to see how the base looks when I'm working from a white undercoat.

I finished the soulstones all over the Visarch, and I'm really pleased with how they turned out. Kinda wish I had more than one color for them, but I only bought the green technical gemstone paint. As a side note, I absolutely love it, and I really want to paint more stuff with it, other than just gemstones here and there. I'm just not sure what.
