These 3 characters can be taken as the HQ for *any* army of the Imperium. The Inquisition FOC only has a single HQ requirement, so you can therefore take one of these as the HQ requirement for an Inquisition FOC and hence not need to take any tax units. Completely legal right?

Usually this wouldn't be an issue as you'd have a CAD or similar anyway but there is always the possibility that you are either running an army of formations or have simply run out of HQ slots and want to take one of these.

I see no permission to take them as an HQ in ANY detachment. From Fall of Cadia...

"...but each of them can also be included as an HQ choice in a Combined Arms or Allied Detachment comprised of an Armies of the Imperium Faction (such as Astra Militarum or Space Marines), regardless of the individual character's actual Faction."

I only see to permission to take the three characters as 'replacement HQs' in Combined Arms and Allied Detachments. The Inquisition Detachment is neither a Combined Arms, nor an Allied Detachment. Remember, Allied Detachment with a capital A refers to specific Detachment named "Allied Detachment", which is presented in the BRB.

Greyfax can be taken as a HQ in an Inquistor detachment, which is 1-2 HQ, 0-3 Elite. Thanks what makes her special.

Well sure, she's an Inquisitor. You can do that with any Inquisition HQ and always have been able to. I think the OP must have been thinking that you could do the same with Belisarius Cawl and Celestine.

That's a good catch on the allied detachment. Damn need a troop tax after all then. Although I suppose 3 acolytes for 12 points from the latest dex isnt too bad.

Cawl lets you take Skitarii in a CAD, which is awesome as they are a fast army with cool rules that will benefit from ObSec and Canticles.

Also just realised that an Inq detachment will be unable to be taken as an allied detachment as they only have elites slots. Doh!

They have 0-3 elite slots, so a solo Inquisitor is still a legal thing.

To clarify, Poly Ranger:
Whenever you say "allied detachment," you are referring (purposefully or ignorantly) to "any detachment that isn't my Primary." When you say "Allied Detachment," you are referring specifically to the Detachment in the BRB that has 1 HQ, 1-2 Troops, etc. It is the second most common detachment after the CAD. (Although War Con is prolly up there, too; and Oathsworn.)

So while an Inquisitor detachment can be an allied detachment, it cannot be an Allied Detachment.

And Greyfax, Cawl, and Celestine are HQs for any Imperial CAD or AD, but not just any allied detachment.

I'm doing the same with Harlequins.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Hold on, if they CAN be taken in the Inquisition Detachment, does that mean they also get the Free WT roll?

Yes, if they could they would get the bonus of the detachment. But only Greyfax has the INQ faction so she is the only one who can be used in that detachment due to its restrictions.
