Got an infantry based imperial guard army with sister of silence squad and inquisitor with psyocculum. Looking for an extra ally to stick in there for around 200-225 points. Ideally something that is able to put a dent in something big. Anyone able to suggest something?

Any of the assassins, Belisarius Cawl, Celestine, Inquisitor Greyfax (if you'd like another psyocculum).

Any of the triumvirate can be taken as HQ choices in your existing CAD or allied detachments if you're using one.

Allied Militarum Tempestus, as opposed to taking them from the Elites section of Codex: AM for the bonus orders. I run a Command Squad with 4x Plasma and two 5-man Scion Squads with 2x Melta for 325pts. Dropping one of the 5-man melta teams would take you down to 235pts, maybe cutting a plasma gun to save an extra 15pts?

I deep strike them in and pop heavy armour with the meltas, and use the command order that effectively grants preferred enemy to the plasma gunners - especially good against MEQ within rapid firing range.

The small selection of allies have turned a number of games in my favour quite unexpectedly.

3,500 (and building) ASM
3,000 Blood Angels
1500 Eldar (abandoned)

AoS - Beastclaw Raiders, Ironjawz, Night Goblins, and Ogors - Destruction remains unvanquished!

I'd agree with the above, can't think of anything more points efficient without a tax than Cawl or Celestine if you want extremely durable hard hitters.
Another option if you can shave 30pts elsewhere is the plasma obliterator.

Ravenwing attack squadrons work nicely with my foot guard.

3 Bikers with 2 grav guns and combi grav 115pts
Land speeder with 2 multi meltas 75pts (or CML or AC - can change to preference)

These can outflank and help deal with heavies that the guard struggle against - e.g. imperial knights, riptides, wraithknights. They can also be good for maelstrom missions by zooming onto objectives with all guns blazing - guard really lack in mobility, and I find that these help with this as well.

They're incredibly points efficient, with no tax units and they're not even easy for the opponent to remove with their re-rollable jink save.

Fully Painted Armies: 2200pts Orks 1000pts Space Marines 1200pts Tau 2500pts Blood Angels 3500pts Imperial Guard/Renegades and 1700pts Daemons 450pts Imperial Knights

Nah, what you wanna do is hire some Blood Axes:

http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Blood_Axes

Fer 200 points you get a MegaArmored Warboss with Bosspole and 10 Boyz in a Trukk with a Rokkit and Reinforced Ram (allows rerolling Dangerous Terrain AND Tank Shock/Ram) Moves 24" a turn, open-topped assault vehicle, Ld 9, 10 ablative wounds, 2+ save on the Boss, 5 Str 10 attacks on the charge along with 4 Str 4 attacks for each boy who didn't bite it earlier. Extra points? Upgrade a boy to a nob with a Big Choppa.

Hide it in some terrain far enough away from the rest of your army and run it up the table turn one. Turn two: profit!

Fighting crime in a future time!

these units should be in nearly all competitive Imperial armies
