Has anyone ever added a third "army" to the table, which automatically attacked units within X inches?
A friend received a box of Tyranids as a gift, and, he doesn't play them.
We were entertaining the thought of using some of the miniatures as objective guards. Basically, when someone got within X inches, or attacked them, they responded according to a flow chart.
Basically like this:
(a) is a model within shooting distance? -> Yes -> Shoot at it.
(b) is a model within 10"? -> Yes -> Roll to charge
(c) if no models are within shoot or charge distance, roll direction dice and a d3. The creature moves this distance, provided it stays within 6" of the objective.
With the monsters getting a "turn" after both players had taken theirs.
The idea would be you'd have a few monsters guarding objectives, to add a layer of fun to the game.
You could get real creative with it, too. Roll a D6 and a D4 (D8/2, if you have it). A pack of monsters deep strike at this location (in feet) on the board during their turn. (still roll deep strike). Like, once a monster unit was fully eliminated, it would deep strike back onto the table.
I realize in larger games this would be pointless. But we play smaller games, so the board isn't overly cluttered.
Has anyone done this successfully, if so, what'd you do?

I feel like a better place for a third 'NPC' faction on the table would be kill team. Games are usually less serious and it would make more sense to encounter hostile aliens in unknown territory than them being sandwiched between two large armies
There's no reason not to try something similar in a full game though. Maybe when moving onto an objective you roll a die and on a 1 or 2 a unit of gants or stealers appear. Or some similar randomised system.

Well 2 armies, at 1000 points each, doesn't have a whole lot of models.
You're looking at maybe 20-40 models on each side. As 2 space marine armies, i think our total model count is under 40.

There was a chapter approved article on the GW site for this. Its no longer on their site but some fans have rescued it and are keeping parts of it on-line. You might want to track down the original WD's fr more info in this.
