give it a go and let us know what happens. I suspect a lot of people (especially elite armies) will hate the fact that rend is meaningless against this force, and its throwing out a decent amount of mortal wounds as an extra bonus. No hexwraiths though?

Thank you so much for you comment!

No hexwraiths. I own 30x but they just dont pull their weight compared to the hosts and their mortal wounds.

You think elite armies will have troubles against it?

I went to msu to counter small unit high cost unkillable units and zone defense against teleports easier.

I know this might be thread-o-mancy, but as an update. This list ran extremely well. Made it to top 10 at adepticon 2017, 2000 pt Aos champs. Played at the top 6 table day two. Was a great run!

Here was the final list.

Banshee - 80 - Cursed Book
Banshee - 80
Carin Wraith - 60
Carin Wraith - 60

Mourngul - 400 - Ruler of the NIght

Lots of people struggled with this army. Its a massive tarpit and with the deathless minions and ignoring rend, this army was monsterous at tanking wounds when the dice werent betraying me.

Game 1 Tabled an oruuk player in 4 turns

Game 2 nearly tabled a Sylvaneth in 4 turns

Game 3 tied/won by 40 points against Khorne daemons

Game 4 Tied/lost by points to Death archai nefrata mourgul list.. but it ran from my whole army for 3 turns and had to retreat to caputre obj. Barely lost by points. Lost the main obj and minor victory by one wound on one host. Damn!

Game 5 Lost to slyvaneth player with ultra hot dice. His trees ate 25 of the 33x hosts in 2 turns

Final thoughts.... dropping the banshees for wraiths. Taking the Triumph to re roll wounds or whatever....

Seems like hit penalties would screw this army royally. Moonclan Grots in particular would outnumber the hosts and tank them the whole game assuming a hit penalty from the Mourngul, or outright win if it wasn't there.

Fantastic looking army man! I love the coffin bases for the hosts.
Very nice to see such a theamatic army do so well at a tournament

Thanks for posting the update. If you don't mind, I have a couple questions for you.

1. Looking at your list, I guess it's safe to say that you prefer MSU over big tarpits when it comes to spirit hosts?

2. Why not a unit or two of hexwraiths? I imagine that they could provide back up punch incase the mourngul got taken out early. I can see them flying over tarpitting spirit hosts, potentially dealing mortal wounds, and then assaulting. They seem like a natural fit, so I am curious as to your reasoning, as obviously the list worked for you.

3. Any general play tips or tactics would be great. My wife is starting Nighthaunts as her 2nd army, so any advice would be great as to inform her future purchases.

1) MSU is hacks in AOS. Nullifying reserve mechanics, teleportation and summoning is just too powerful.

2) Hexes i find are very difficult to use. They will almost never make it over an enemy, clear the 3" with their massive bases, and then charge. Their damage output is weak, and the supposed balance is that you can fly over and deal wounds. But since that rarely ever happens, it doesnt make them worth 160 for 10x wounds, when I can do 120 and take 9x that have have a smaller footprint, still can fly, and have a better chance to deal morals. I own 30x hexes because I play ONLY nighthaunt and love their models. Also 5x mournguls. lol

3) Depends on your wifes level of comp play. Banshees are so cool. I ran two, but an now dropping them as the cairns are just too damn good and cheaper. Though, a banshee did roll a 12 and scream a unit of slyvaneth off the board in a single shout. Which is cool. But id rather reap my enemies bodies like corn with the cairns scythes. PLus it mows down horde armies much easier.

I wouldn't just charge with hexwraiths, run to get them over the enemy and let them charge you. Then retreat into their back line the next turn, dealing mortals as you go. It's a suicide mission but one that can seriously screw up an enemy battle plan.

Hehe, thread necromancy for an undead army

Nice looking army! While I usually prefer a greater variety of units in an army, I can see the effort and love put into those models, and it just looks so cool!

And good job placing so high! I like the rundown on the games and your overall strategy.
