For 60pts I could have a 5 man squad of renegade infantry veterans armed with 1 meltagun scout move 6" from the 12" deplyment edge. Or can have them deep strike near rear/side armor facing.

Note: Renegade infantry Veterans are worse than Imperial since Imperial gets better options. It doesnt matter for this topic.

I was thinking about spamming these veterans with a melta gun. Half as many maybe deepstriking instead. It would get my veterans closer but not as close as a scouting immolator. I can also deep strike them with a small foot print and if they misshap then its no big deal at 60pts.

Compared to infiltrating Alpha Legion Marines at 25pts more for 5 CSM and 1 meltagun (bs4, t4, sv 3+).

However it may sound better, they still have to keep away atleast 12" out of sight or 18" being seen. Their 1st turn would be moving 6" regularly and be 12" to use a melta gun on a walker/tank pretty much against front facing.

I forgot if Alpha legion gave them free votlw or was it only a black legions thing.

Both options can outflank. However which is better in a vacuum. Which is more reliable? Which would you prefer?

You are paying 60 points for 5 BS3 guardsmen with a single melta gun

You can spend those 60 points on 10 renegade infantry with militia training and get 10 bs3 guardsmen with 2 melta guns just with out scout

I have used 15 renegade infantry with 3 melta guns in unending host and it doesnt work as good as it sounds on paper.

Those infantry models spend all game trying to move and run just to shot a melta gun 2 or if lucky 3 times in a single game. Most of the time, as soon as they get close enough, they get shot, suffer casualties and fail moral and retreat taking a turn extra before running off the table to
continue unending host.

Scout gets them 6" closer allowing them to shoot sooner before losing bodies. Or for the same points, they can deep strike hopefully and pop off 1 shot at rear armor before getting rekt.

You start 6" closer but die twice as fast, and with a single Bs3 shot (that still has to roll armor pen and get through and cover save) your one shot is more likely to do nothing then do any damage. Its not a better tactic then the blood of infantry. At least with the blob of infantry you have a ton of bodies in the way of the special weapons so you can afford to take some wounds.

You're better off with 10 infantry in a chimera or a 20 man blob with 3x meltas + Chaos Sigil (IA13's is basically fearless-lite)
