I was reading online about taking 3 inquisitors to deal with Magnus the Red. Can you take 3 inquisitors without going unbound? I have the Inquisition dex and 1 detachment only has 2 slots for Inquisitors. I guess you could take 2 Inquisition detachments, but isn't taking more than 2 detachments frowned upon? I mainly want to run IG and don't want to run just inquisition. Sorry, I know this is a newb question.

Well you can take more than one detatchment or the new gathering storm detatchment

You can use as many detachments as you have points / models for. Certainly a few years ago taking multiple detachments might have looked-down upon, but nowadays I can't see anyone throwing a hissy-fit over it if you're doing it to have a fun army rather than abuse some rule or other.

Some tournaments limit the number of detachments and other restrictions, but those are specific to whichever tournament you are attending.

OK. Maybe I got confused with some tourney rules I heard. Thanks for the replies.

How would 3 inquisitors deal with Magnus the Red?

The gist of it, as I recall, is that you run 2 Malleus Inquisitors and 1 Hereticus Inquisitor. The Hereticus has a Null Rod so they can approach Magnus without fear of maledictions and witchfires, while the Malleus are both outfitted with Empyrean Brain Mines and Nemesis Daemon Hammers. I think the Hereticus also gets a Thunder Hammer. One of the Malleus also has the Grimoire of True Names.

Grimoire drops Magnus to I2. Then he has to make an Initiative test against the Brain Mines or be unable to act. The Concussive on the hammers knocks him to I1 for subsequent rounds in which he'll continue to have to make tests.

It might take awhile, but the Inquisitors can just keep wailing on Magnus with their hammers until he's out while he never gets to respond thanks to low initiative and the brain mines.

Very clever although I'm not sure how you get him to land in the first place. Surely the opponent has quite the mobility advantage over footslogging Inquisitors

I can only assume that the Malleus and Hereticus Inquisitors have a Radical Xenos colleague hiding in the shadows with some "appropriated" Tau Empire weaponry.
