Just to clarify, shooting was always a flat roll and close combat might as well have been for how little it varied.

Yeah, literally the only thing that's changed about shooting is that they now give you the roll you have to make instead of making you do the math or memorize the table. And there are like two extreme exceptions to melee roll to hit values being nearly always the same as well.

I'll miss, and already miss, having glancing hits take out vehicles sometimes in one hit, and sometimes surviving the whole game. For some reason, to me, that made vehicles extra terrifying.

But even that I'm not feeling too bad about going away.

My Necrons being OP

I'll miss formations, for as much flak as they caught (and much of it deserved), they sometimes had awesome and fluffy results. Like Lions blade with a single demi-company was a fluffy and not overpowered formation, I'd run it with the Deathwing and Ravenwing add-ons, and it made everything perform like it should in lore. The new FoCs don't seem like they are going to be as rewarding, but hey maybe the Faction specific FoCs will provide fluffy benefits without going off of the deep end.

Constantly being negative doesn't make you seem erudite, it just makes you look like a curmudgeon.

I think this is ultimately what they're going for. Whether or not they pull it off in a balanced way is yet to be seen, but I think people are making way too much of formations going away. The sense I get is that formations will still very much be a thing, with a different name, and with command points as a standardized bonus instead of some of the more outrageous and unbalanced formation bonuses.

Yeah, I'm not sure how it's going work. My assumption is they are going to give each faction specific things they can spend their command points on, such as:

When a unit with the "Dark Angels" keyword is charged, you can Spend a command point and allow them to fire overwatch at their full ballistic skill. You may only do this one per assault phase.

Whether that comes from the faction of your warlord, as an effect of taking a faction specific FoCs, or all of your units sharing a keyword is a mystery to be revealed.

It brought fluff to a lot of armies. It's a shame a few of them were overpowered.

40k is going to be "AoS in Space"? Interesting it will be embracing it's roots, then.

I won't be missing hideous bloat and having rules spread across tons of publications to keep on top of. I want to get back to a game where the rules aren't a barrier to enjoying the setting.

All of the people cropping up who are lamenting that the game will be "dumbed-down" or sigmarized crack me up. Most of the major rule changes so far were present in different previous editions of 40k and WHFB before AoS was even a gleam in GW board members' eyes. 40k was basically BORN as WHFB in space, and then WHFB was gradually changed to be 40k with swords and sorcery. Now things are coming full circle again, and 8th is pretty much a hybrid of 2nd edition 40k and WHFB with a sprinkling of AoS streamlining and administrative practice thrown in.

The big thing is that this time, they are starting fresh instead of being locked into the cycle of making each new codex OP to compensate for the years of inattention and neglect each army gets between updates, especially for the less popular factions. It's the best chance they've had in literal decades to actually create a well-balanced game that works. But of course, all of a sudden, some of the most maligned aspects of 7th edition have their stalwart defenders and honorable champions of tradition

I don't like all of the reveals so far, just as I'm sure most people have their reservations on one thing or another. But it's hard not to see that with a pared-down rule set, more granular and adjustable mechanics and the promise of frequent updates based on community feedback, this edition at least has a fighting chance to be pretty good compared to previous ones. What's really important is that they're waking up to what it means to manage and develop a game system and they're showing a willingness to support it as a product.

I've only been around since 7th so I'm not sure there's really anything I'm going to miss. The only thing I can think of is armor facing. It was honestly a lot of fun winding my way around to the side of an enemy vehicle and then charging it because I play orks, there's no way I'm killing a vehicle in shooting.

It's honestly a mix. I liked the tactical aspect, but it also ended up with a lot of arguments of "that's totally side armor" and etc.

Yeah, rolling that 2++ ball around the board was just the pinnacle of stragic thinking. 'Should i murder these 3 units with no possibility of counterattack or those 3 units?'

Tbh, I think I'll miss the flamer template. There's just something about placing that template B2B with your miniature and see how many heretics/bugs you fry.

Yeah, templates are just plain fun, and they should always have a purpose.

Well. I suppose the odd time a trukk of burna Boyz gets to lay a template on a unit after they been tank shocked into a cluster. Stick the template down from any point of the truk to cover most models and multiply by twelve. Good chance your opponent will generously save time by removing the whole unit before rolling to wound. Sounds like a mob of burnas might still be srs business just unfortunate that its in an army already up to their necks deep in anti infantry weaponry.

While there were the few broken ones.. Most of them were for making a themey army..

At this stage while they were promising a bonus fro themey armies I haven't seen anything to show it yet.
