Subject: What force has the most variation?

So with 8th edition coming, it appears I'll finally be able to start playing with no more rules price hurdle to get over. So I have a question with what army I'm going to start. I keep telling myself i want to play chaos(marines and daemons) but then I also come back to Eldar(craftworld and dark). I want to know what force has the most variation in playstyle and also painting, as I don't want to be stuck playing the same playstyle everytime.
My Chaos pros list: cool models, generally a tougher army, lots of model variation
My Chaos cons list: Really don't like fluff
My Eldar pros list: cool models, like the fluff, very colorful
My Eldar cons list: generally weaker army(as in low strength and toughness models, no big armor tanks, etc)
So help me pick which way to go, I want an army that has a lot of variation in painting and playstyle. Or somehow try and sway me elsewhere. Thanks a bunch

Have you looked at Ynnari? Combines CWE, DE, and Harlequins into one army, giving triple the depth of CWE!

I actually know nothing about Ynnari, but I will look into it.

Basically they combine units from all three armies into a seperate factions.
Some stuff isn't included, mandrakes for DE for example, and also the homculeous(?) covens. But most of the big units are there, gives the army a different playstyle/feel than the other three, allows you to collect three seperate factions and play them seperately or together, giving you 4 seperate armies to play in one.
Just dont buy the codex's until 8th, theyll be rolled into one and their playstyle may change/be altered from what it is now.
Hope that helps!

I actually like the sound of that, I like having the ability to play a few different forces, but like that they can all be played together. It's why I looked at csm and daemons

Exactly!
So im planning on building a harlequin heavy Ynnari list, with some DE units splattered about because the models are gorgeous, and some wraithblades from CWE because the models are pretty.
But ill be able to also play a pure harlequin army, and if I collect some more models a DE army and also a CWE army.
I love chaos, the models are gorgeous. I considered them too (even bought some KDK) but when ynnari came out I sold it all and got my hands on some space elfs!

Yeah I like that. My only concern is that it won't be a very durable army because they're eldar

the real answer is "we don't know yet" eldar could end up a monobuild army while CSMs are "everything and anything are good" according to GW they wanna make every army be variable, we'll have to see how that works

Currently in 7th Eldar are an increadibly durable army. Jink saves on all vehicles and bikes, side armour of 12 on all tanks, speed and range to stay out of shooting or assault range of many opponents units, 3+ saves on many units, insanely durable unit in the WK, psychic abilities to get things like shrouded and reroll saves.
I really hope 8th takes Eldar back to actually having a weakness... which used to be low durability.

To be fair, between jinking jetbikes and Wraith units, Eldar can currently be hard-as-nails. We will have to wait and see how things shape up in 8th edition.
Even when I play Eldar without the tougher units, I don't find they die too quickly. The idea with Eldar is to use your speed and superior firepower to overwhelm one part of the enemy line while avoiding retribution from the rest. They require a bit more skill to play like this but are really good fun. They are not as durable as Marines for sure but they are so fast that you shouldn't really be caught in the open with them.

Eldar have plenty of durable options. Wraithlords, Wraithknights, and the CWE tanks are all highly resilient, even when compared to Marines etc. Similarly the Dark Eldar Haemonculus units can be absurdly durable.

Tau has some great versatility. Cool vehicles, could go suits, you have auxiliaries, you can do mechanized army, foot Tau, and they have plenty of great aircraft models if you include FW. Not all of that will be super competitive, but it's a lot of visual variety which is why I like the army so much.

yeah Tau are very veristile, you can shoot. you can shoot or you can shoot
seriously, the Tau have a number of good units, but I'd not say they're partiuclrly versitile given they lack any real melee options and have no access to psykers

Yeah I do like Tau a lot, they are visually one of my favorite armies. But they lack the ability to do cc or psychic abilities which kind of turns me away, otherwise I would play tau without thinking twice

Yeah I always do consider them. Psykers aren't too important to me and I could go without them or very little but melee is something I do want to have in my army

I highly recommend you try out several armies at your local gamestore first! I know three people who jumped into their army, without reading the lore or learning how they play (going just off their visual whims, which is not the worst way frankly) and after spending about $200 decided they rather play a different faction because they didn't enjoy the playstyle.
Try out several games with several different factions proxy and learn the basic rules. Otherwise, you may find out, that you love Eldars look and their cool tech, but you actually much prefer how Orks barrel in charging like nut jobs. Or find you don't like psykers or weak models and you find you much Tanks or blobs of infantry and go Imperial Guard instead.

I did specify visually. Rule wise it's gunlines or mobile suits. I hope kroot get a buff this edition I want them to be more viable.

Do you mean different units operating under different colors? Units from different cadres, possibly? Alternatively, you could just have different unit types set up ala Eldar Aspects as that is their Cadre's traditions.

Different units of different Septs working alongside, or as Charistoph says, just differnt units.
One thing that you should remember is: Tau aren't Space Marines. They normally wear faction colours, but at the same time when they are deployed normally change the color of their armour to mix with the enviroment. They are reasonable afterall!
(So, white in a snow planet/enviroment, brown in a desert, etc...)

While i like DA, Space marines seem boring to paint to me. Smooth armored guys that are majority one color. DA have some more colors than most, but still predominently green

The thing about the chaos fluff really is like the dark eldar and necrons your own background for your own guys likely cares the least about the setting. I mean you can do whatever you want with your army as it's your dudes; but to me those 3 seem to have the most freedom within the setting.
