With 8th Ed. around the corner, I'm hyped and want to start a new army, but I'm worried that it won't be able to stand up against my two power gaming buddies. One of them has pretty much every eldar unit painted or assembled, so you can bet he'll analyse the new eldar rules and put together the cheesiest list he can. The other has a ton of DA and daemons, so he'll do the same.

What do you think? Can I buy a couple units of rubric marines and some sorcerer?

Do not worry they are still unsafe or consumption and they will not explode.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Hower no one will know just how good they will be in the meta since you know, there isn't any jet nor do we have an idea of the complete rules.

Go for it! With the new AP rules I see TSons being quite good.

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

They look good enough to me (as long as they aren't too expensive), but none competetive (no points) games would still see them doing well:

I'd say, go for it.

mrhappyface has given you the confirmed rules for the Rubric Marines, as such you might want to start building a solid core of Rubricae squads. By the time you are finished building and painting them, we may have a little more info on the rest of the army. Besides, the Scarab Occult Terminators and the Exalted Sorcerers are such new kits, I would be fairly surprised to see those kits invalidated by the rules not complying to what the boxes can build.

I wouldnt say only build a few and save some for maybe use of special weapons, they havent actually announced the actual pricing of stuff (Power is used for casual kinda-balancing for quick use and considering he is playing with le hardcore I believe they aint gonna do that)

If you're set on running that army I see no reason not to. If you just want something powerful to pit against your friends I'd hold off until you know more.

Sort of? On one hand you may want to grab a range of stuff rather than building to the formations we've got now to avoid finding out when the details land that you need more/different stuff, on the other hand the Thousand Sons don't really have enough units to worry too much about the possibility that something might become obsolete.

From another thread I posted in:

DaPino wrote:
All I want to do is field an army where taking a squad of Rubric marines/scarab occult terminators doesn't result in an automatic loss.

The teased profile seems to be a leap in the right direction. They're going to be taking less wounds because of the wound table, on average their save going to be better than most marines and their bolters are shaping up to be an actual credible threat.

I'm just about drooling over inferno combi-bolters wielded by Scarab occult. A succesful deepstrike would result into 20 Str 4 AP -2 shots. That's 6 wounds on average (assuming T4) which not even terminators will shrug off easily.

Thousand sons can only go up from where they are. Currently they are hands down the worst models in the CSM codex, but it looks like times are a-changing!

You don't have to be happy when you lose, just don't make winning the condition of your happiness.

Game-wise I would wait.
GW is known for loop holes, gaps, OP and underwhelming units and models.

We've answered this several times before and it is entirely based on how/why/where you game.

Are you meta-driven/tournament-bound/OMGMUSTWIN gaming...or do you want to play a game of 40K with friends? (who hopefully are like minded).

Models rarely are removed from the game or become genuinely obsolete (meaning you cannot take them). Unit sizes are prone to change, but models - particularly new ones, will almost always soldier on. If you like 40K or gaming with your friends, or hell, if you just like the models - buy them.

Will they be the best army in the game, suitable for winning big tournaments? No one can tell you this. If that's your aim, don't buy anything.

The chances of chaos getting a update soon I feel very are...... Well they are odds not even a addicted gambler would try.

Plus the next chaos are going to look goofie as ol hell. Half marine half mutant with giggly smiles. More like a Saturday morning cartoon then evil. So buy them now while you can.

The Mutilator got its fix from free Legion rules for the most part. If you couple those with maybe a 5 point discount they're decent. Otherwise, the legions doing the most for them are basically anything but Alpha Legion, Thousand Sons, and ironically World Eaters.

What units would you guys start out with if you were aiming towards a 1850 list?

Some rubric marines, they are the only TSons that we have stats for atm and they are a troop and a staple for a TSons army so your most likely gonna use them anyway, there are also quite scary with -2ap.

Personally, I'd say wait, it's expected to drop in a couple months.

If you want, you are of course allowed to, and they did say no units would become obsolete. If you are trying for a competitive list then wait. If you are going on looks of the models, they probably won't change.

"Enemies of the Imperium, hear me. You have come here to die. The Immortal Emperor is with us and we are invincible. His soldiers will strike you down. His war machines will crush you under their treads. His mighty guns will bring the very sky crashing down upon you. You cannot win. The Emperor has given us His greatest weapon to wield. So make yourselves ready. We are the First Kronus Regiment, and today is our Victory Day. " - Governor-Militant Lukas Alexander, Commander 1st Kronus Regiment

I've also been looking at getting a tiny Thousand Sons force, mostly on the grounds of "i like the lore" and "these models look awesome." I'm waiting. I'd really like to see how the points pan out before budgeting for a force. I won't get much but to me that just makes it more important to optimize what I can.

have a datasheet isn't enough.until you have the complete picture i will not start a new army, anyway you dont know howmuch they will cost in competitive matches, they might cost too much to be played.
