Thanks CK, the absorption really does give a nice effect. I’ll probably hit it all with washes in the future, but for now it’s done.

No new pics, had a second shelf of stuff collapse for no apparent reason. ninjas took the brunt of it with both shuriken tossers and a two sworded guy each losing arms and ever sword getting bent . Sashimonos everywhere and bases broken off. All my Ghar models for Gates of Antares took a hit too. Desk has gotten cleaned up a bit, but progress is halted for a few days as I decide what to do next to fix everything. The converted desk may disappear in its entirety, but that seems to be a big undertaking.

I should explain better. The back of the desk I use has pegboard attached. Both incidents had stuff mounted to the pegboard pop off for no reason whatsoever. The pegs stayed in place butstuff that was fully on it popped off. The second was a utensil drawer I use to place newly finished work on so I can admire it over a few days, or rework it if I don’t like it later. It popped out when there was no reason why it would have...I am seriously considering ghosts here.

Thanks I know what a Cat-man-do does when needed

Well just a quick one again today. I have seriously pulled a muscle in my shoulder/back. I’ve been avoiding the doctor (working at a hospital means that’s difficult), so I’m trying to take it as easy as I can. Sitting at a painting table and leaning my head down is quite painful so I only took a half hour today, backed up with lots of ibuprofen and Tylenol. I wanted to find a different way of doing some bamboo and the bandit I was working on recently looked like he had a bamboo walking stick or bo staff. I think it worked out pretty well.

The washes are still wet in many of the pics. I’m letting some possible bamboo dry right now, I’ll try and snap some pics before I leave for work. They are just wooden dowels with agrax earthshade was he followed by a beil-tangreen wash.

How do you like the paper/card buildings? I've got a number to build once I get around to working up some Blood & Plunder related stuff, but have had mixed results with the two I did to test them out.

Do you matte spray them or do anything to hide the scoring lines on the edges?

For test of honor you don’t need the insides of the building in most cases, they work fine. I used 90# weight paper when it says to use 110, but they seem fine. They won’t last forever, but eventually I’ll just use them as templates to scratchbuild more buildings or replace them with ones from sarissa-precision or 4 ground. I don’t seal them. I only bend them with my hands though and don’t score them enough to break the ink job.

Your new fort is coming along nicely.

Also I think I found a new 1:1 scale project. Really tempted.

I’m thinking about it seriously. Now I’m researching length of the Tetsubo. I’m 6’5” and most historical pics have them to the sternum to shoulder height.

I’m looking for a real thin (micron) marker in brown to possibly draw the bamboo bands in, but otherwise I won’t worry about it because of scale size.

I think it’s all just brain problems.

No modeling done today, but started to price out materials for the Tetsubo...
$60ish for the lumber
$35 for the carriagebolts
$20 for stains and supplies
Not to mention I personally don’t own a table saw. Knew I should have grabbed the monster one from Poppy

I may have to switch out the lumber from oak to something else, even if it’s just for a prototype. It would cut the costs dramatically.

On the bamboo side, the smaller diameter sticks look much more realistic than the large ones. Still not sure of the band/segments, will have to check them out later.

Very nice figures- I've commented from time to time on individual ones, but to see a large group of them was very impressive.

I like the idea of the tetsubo as well- stylish _and_ useful!

For the joint lines on your bamboo- could you score a line with a hobby knife and hit it was another wash of Agrax Earthshade?

Great work all around- like I mentioned earlier, I'm resisting (so far successfully) the urge to run out and get invested in samurai themed figures, motivated by your work.

Thanks Meer_Cat , really appreciate the kind words. A samurai army has always been my dream, and the game is a nice step towards it. We have a lot of talented painters here on DakkaDakka who have inspired me to attack the samurai models. I hope you decide to jump into the game...either one really as what I’ve seen of Bushido really does look good, so does Kensei and I’m tempted to try and get a copy of the Ronin rules from Osprey as well.

Well the guys who made the Tetsubo make lots of weapons.....and armor too. I was watching another of their videos and now I want to Cosplay as a zombie apocalypse samurai . I like their easy to make riveted washer armor.

Also I did some more searching and found the local Menards has the 2x2-8’ oak for $20 and the packs of carriage bolts (66) for $1.89. So for less than $30 I’ll have the main supplies for the Tetsubo..... I just need to borrow a table saw now. The other question is what color to stain it? Should I go with the Mahogany like in the video? Or they have colored poly shades where I could try and do a red, blue or black stain? My feeling is it should be dark so it contrasts with the carriage bolts, and then use color on the handle wrapping. I was also considering drilling into the base of the handle to install a eyebolt which could also get wrapping or just fabric strips on it? Also while at work I was thinking about the length and 5’ is just about right, though I might cut it 5’6” as that would rest across my shoulders for the full length.

Keep the comments coming, it’s really getting my crazy project juices flowing

Edit: used my micron pen to draw rings. Right side one was done after dried washes, left side was drawn on dowel before washes which are wet.

Japan

Somewhere on some terrain blog (Terragenesis?), someone put up a tutorial about palm trees. He wrapped making tape around whatever he used as the core to get those horizontal rings. Maybe that would work for bamboo-- instead of overlapping the tape all the way up, you could try wrapping individual segments with just a tiny space between each section?

That said, drawing rings with pen looks like it would do the job quite well, and with less work.

I saw one like it from Luke Towan, I think I’ll stick with the pen, much easier and way less time consuming.

As the Vorlon Kosh said.......”and so it begins.”

TETSUBO!!!!

The cuts didn’t come out great, but I think it’ll work just fine .

Resting now, killing a tree in a little while, then maybe some more work on it.

Oh and the grip already feels fantastic. I think 5’ will be fine after all. That fixes some of the bad cut issues.

I hope so, my brothers tablesaw had issues and he didn’t leave out the pusher or blocks so it was all done freehand. Not perfect, but messed up parts will be where I wind up having the handle at. It took me almost an hour to figure out he had a screw block keeping the saw from going past a 37 degree angle . Once I found that (his model is slightly different than the online user manual), everything went smooth. Best part is he lives with my parents still, so I got to visit with them after cutting the board. It’s still 8’ right now, still deciding if I’m going to go more than the 5’ build like the video, or just go 5’. Bloggers not always better . Besides I had to take out a tree stump just now and I grabbed my 8# sledgehammer. If this 5’ beatstick is 6#, I’m going to need to hit the gym. Even with 3’ of handle it will be a beast to swing.

Hopefully I can just use my sledgehammer for this sort of workout.

Edit: newest addition to my bandit crew

Im thinking of adding something to the back of his jacket. I don’t think the rising sun would be appropriate, any suggestions?

So scale shot

So I started with the 8’ 2x2 red oak and put 45degree miter on each of the corners. Also cut it down to a 5’ length like in the video. Tadashi the dishonorable on old GW hexagonal paint pot for size.

Scale shot of Tadashi with the 1/4”x 3/4” zinc carriage bolt to get an idea of the 200 of these which will adorn the business end of the Tetsubo.

Now to start marking off the drill spots 200 marks.

The hat comes on the bandit...but if your asking paint wise, it was zandri dust washed with seraphim sepia.

Also, drill press makes short work of 128, yes 128 stud holes on the short 3’ length of the off-cut Tetsubo. 20 minutes tops for the holes....putting the bolts in....20 in about an hour .

This is my Test piece, I’m learning a lot from it. The larger piece will get stained and the handle worked on before it gets bolted together. The handle on the little guy is large enough for both hands, but also good for just one handed swings.
