I'm actually quite curious what they're going to do with IG sniper rifles, considering what we saw in the Tau preview: the sniper drone didn't have Strength X, it had S5 AP0, a pulse rifle profile.

Of course, IIRC Tau have been an exception to "snipers are SX" in the past, so it might not mean anything. Still, if they gave IG snipers a lasgun profile that would be a little bit silly for sniper SWTs. "Oh no, Reboot Girlyman is being targeted by three lasguns! Oh wait..."

They'll probably do something or other to help IG snipers do their job though. Like I said earlier, maybe SX is still a thing and Tau are just the exception.

Longshot Pulse Rifles had Strength X previously..

Deathmarks got a major buff from that. Assuming they keep some of their already okay selling points, they'd be able to appear and wound characters on a 2+ and wound-spam them to death.

Man I really hope not, using long range carpet bombing weapons as precision character killers was one of many things I hated about 7th.

Think less of snipers and more of assassins. Something to remove heroes. It might be lictors, or deathcult or vindicar or swooping hawks,. Every list will have to decide if they need units dedicated to the task or make do.

Personally I could see ork kommando's with sniper rifles as long as they are like the big anti vehical over sized kind http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b24/hybenamon/LAND/INFANTRY/WW%20Antitank%20Weapons/ANTITANK%20RIFLES/TB41-1.jpg I'm sure they be well up for that kinda bang. Either that or grots would be obvious choices.

I could see ork kommandos being able to drop in and assassinate ICs, or the loota deffgun getting some variant of precision fire. As for tyranids lictors are probably the assassins of choice.

Grot snipers would be fun.

Maybe Tyranids will get a psychic power or a new psyker unit that can target characters?

in terms of new sniper units, I dunno.. the problem is that it's the big exciting units, or the ones that are important to large numbers that sell really well, a support unit like snipers may not sell well eneugh to justify. and with GW's "if it ain't models we don't offer the option" policy unless a kit has sniper rifles, don't expect sniper options for it.

with that said, given what we've seen and heard I think forge world may be more accepted then in previous generations of 40k, and it's possiable that we could see forge world producing "upgrade kits" and giving rules for them. such as a space marine sniper kit (something that already exists for the HH anyway, so this would just be more 'letting you take 30k into 40k) , and giving a points cost for giving chosen space marines sniper rifles. (the idea of alpha legion chosen snipers, infiltrating and wacking an HQ at a critical time makes me grin)

Well the Sniper Drone unit, which I own a lot of is a great tool now so maybe they will be even cooler in the new version. I've enjoyed using them for a long time.

The hexrifle as written now is really good and could see some increased popularity although using characters to kill characters seems expensive. On the other hand if the Wracks can take more of them there's a thought.

yeah me too. might have the build a squad with em it'll be intreasting to see how kill teams work, I suspect that'll be changed as the kill team conbstruction rules where a little more complex then they needed to be. I could see DW assault marines and terminators just being listed as characters

I think it will be a single unit choice. You'll have Veterans, Vanguard Vets, Terminators, Bikers, and Librarians all in the same datasheet. Start with 0 guys, then can purchase up to 5 models from the following options, then another 5 models.

Each model type will have unique wargear options as per, and the unit will have various rules such as

If the unit has at least 5 Veterans and at least (2 Vanguard Veterans, Bikers, Terminators, a Librarian, any combination with X wargear) then it gets this bonus. It may only have 1 bonus and this is selected on the army list.

Not all factions would need assasins/snipers. The only thing protecting IC's is distance.
If you can close that distance so they are the closest target, you can unload.
So any kind of infiltration or deepstrike would work.

That would be my guess for CSM. Terminators teleporting in and cutting off the head of the snake is pretty much their thing in the lore, at least for the Black Legion.
A terminator annilhilation equivalent with the new combi bolter would certainly provide a threat to characters.

Only problem I see with those kinds of anti character tactics is that they are easily enough countered by surrounding characters such that they can't deploy withing 9 inch of them.
Whereas actual snipers are free to shoot no matter what. On the flip side though, a unit infiltrating next to a character is probably going to be way more dangerous for that character than a your average sniper unit.
Plus they could assault, either immediately or the turn after (provided they survived ofc), so there is merit to both methods I guess.

That said, I wouldn't complain if we got a new csm assassin type unit lol. No clue what that would look like though.
I wonder, could the challengin mechanic from CSM be turned into some form of assasination?
You know, like luring out characters or something along those lines, where if they don't they get some kind of debuff.
Sowing doubt into the opposing ranks, perhaps via dark apostles? Certainly would be fluffy lol.

Re: CSM assassins

I think you nailed it already in terms of XVI Legion/Black Legion tactics, but for generic assassins you already have Warp Talons which do that job in fluff. They suck now but if they can still DS and get their Blind ability in some form they might kick ass, especially if Lightning Claws are any good. Plus they're Daemonic so probably getting an Invulnerable.

Depending on how "shooting pistols while engaged" works (vis-a-vis: can you shoot it at other stuff than what you are fighting?) you could potentially charge into his bubble wrap and shoot through it at him with a unit of gunslingers.

I have a sneaking suspicion flyers are gonna have a harder time shooting at ground targets. But maybe skimming to him will be easy. Who knows.

As I said in another thread, I can only pray that Death Guard get some marines that are so heavily bloated, that all they are good for is getting plonked down somewhere with snipers in their hands. Maybe they can shuffle a few inches.

Pyrovores get an unintentional buff from a slight range increase on their flamers. Can't wait to see what else they get though.

Dark eldar could really use a sniper. I know technically they have one with the hexrifles but snipers make sense with a shock, awe, fear and terror army like dark eldar.
