So Devil Pig Games released a picture on their Facebook page of them holding a Games Workshop headed letter and hinted an announcement in future. They make board war games and card games so could they be a new game licensee?

With lots of announcements about licensees coming this weekend at Warhammer Fest, anything is possible.

Card games? Probably a new ccg. It's been a while since they last tried one.

Good God, a 40k game that played like Heroes of Normandie would be hilariously fun. I love that game to death, ever since I played the game engine in their first game, Frontiers. It literally could be Epic, without miniatures.

Please, this!
It's not too far fetched, either - they did have a sci-fi version of the Heroes of Normandie engine years ago (was that Frontiers?), but it never caught on. I'm sure it'd do much better with the 40K universe to pull from.

It never ends well

Yeah, Frontiers was the first, I have it. It was open-table, without the grid, who's addition made it feel more like a boardgame, but actually greatly speeded gameplay and measurements.

Frontiers had some really great ideas, which Heroes of Normandie made freaking awesome. A simple re-skin with the same art style would be amazing.

I've thought before about making blank tokens with the basic HoN stats, and glueing 6mm figures and vehicles on top to play "Epic", though a huge part of the game is the flipping of tokens to their 'wounded' side, with reduced stats, or smoking debris for vehicles.

I also am down for this. Sounds like a lot of fun actually.

Could you imagine Heroes of <insert Imperial World here> with tiny plastic 40K things?

The problem is part of the charm of the Heroes ga e system is the flip side of (most) of the units showing weakened stats and missing unit members, and the vehicles automatically become terrain. So minis would look sweet, but get in the way of that.

Also, I'm not sure it could ever happen because even "New Games Workshop" would never accept the idea of two people playing any type of 40k with pretty sizeable armies for 50 dollar board game prices.

Love their games and I would love to see an HH / 40k / AoS version of the Heroes games.

I think it would be very well received combining systems and IP's.

I'm still a bit surprised Devil Pig will get to make a 40K Heroes System game, even though it seemed the obvious answer.

They usually Kickstart their games so it'll be interesting to see how long this takes to come out, what price and how well translated and error free the rules will be...

Wonder if Talisman will be farmed out or done in-house now.

I was just about to write "NO WAY would GW allow this to happen - no miniatures = no way!".

Good thing I held off...?!?

I guess with FFG out of the equation there is now plenty of room for 40K and AoS board games

(without minis so they don't compete with GW of course)

Well crap, I'm going to be having to get in on this.

I liked Frontiers. Owned it and had to play solo since nobody wanted to play a miniature-less game around here.

I've wanted to pick up either Heroes of Normandie or the Shadows version, but have held off due to hearing about poorly written rules. Is that the case, or should I go hunt down a copy?

Poorly lit photos of my ever- growing collection of completely unrelated models!

Wha...?!?

That's not the case, as far as I've seen.

I played quite a few games with Lorek, and we had a blast!

I love the "Heroes of..." series and would definitely recommend that you pick it up!

Color me extremely interested!

I got heroes of Normandie on my ipad and definitely enjoyed it for a while...a 40K version of that would be super sweet!

Sonuvabitch.....now I have to buy both the Heroes of Normandie stuff I still want, AND the new 40k stuff?

That sucks in the best way. I was thinking we'd end up with a Heresy Marines vs Marines mirrored game, but Black Reach is Astartes vs. Orks, so awesome..

I was going to say there was also another HoN-style Devil Pig game (HoN Tactics or something) that had players moving tokens each displaying whole platoons of tanks and troops instead of 5-man units on a more abstract map board, but holy crap. Heroes of Black Reach following the Heroes of Normandie engine could really just about be Epic without miniatures, with rules for destructible buildings, super-quick combat resolutions, and a pretty decently working unit vs. unit close combat mechanic. Hell, even the platoon building feels a bit like Epic, with infantry, wargear and vehicle slots in each platoon.

The only stepping stone will be the notoriously bad DPG rules translations, but those are getting better. Even the 'bad' rules translations are more newbie friendly than 40k lately. I taught my 63 year old father in one setting.

Only bummer is if it does too good a job at relegating HoN to the back-shelf, as I already own a couple hundred bucks worth of it. At least the boards and terrain overlays will hopefully be compatible with the 40k tokens.

IF they can get the larger things in here?

IF this is EPIC, more or less?

That will be awesome.

Titans will be a tough fit, I think.

They've got Cthulhu in one of their games, and he takes up a LOT of board space!

Well, yeah. But superheavies should probably work, normal vehicles are a 1x2 token versus the grid, a Baneblade might be 2x2 or 2x3, but that might not mesh right with the grid with how vehicles move.

Also, if the game is close enough to be a re-skin, US, German, or UK forces from HoN would make automatic counts-as Imperial Guard.

(*PS, I'm not a huge fanboy like the above Picard gif makes it seem, I just wanted to show off what I think is a truly disturbing Picard gif, ).

Knights would probably be as big as the could/should go?

But I'd love to see Superheavies in there, like Baneblades and the like.

When I was doing some units for a flat-token Epic Armageddon project of mine using vassal sprites (pics in my gallery), I found that anything taller than a tank was really, really unimpressive as a flat token. Probably too big for the scope of HoN, too. My best games of Heroes usually end up being reminiscent of kinda large 40k games, with 3-5 tanks and 8-12 squads of troops.

Incidentally, I looked and a 2x3 superheavy token could potentially still function using all the standard Heroes vehicle movement rules, though, so that'd be sweet to see if they get that adventurous. Could probably give orders to each turret or the chassis itself for movement, like in Frontiers (and I think maybe HoN, too).

Makes sense for GW to partner with a smaller, in comparison to FFG, company. More appreciation both ways in what is being brought to the collaboration.

Well, other than the fact that almost all their games are tokens, cards, and hard card items....

BOUGHT!

Gah! Why Ultramarines though?

It'd be great if they expand it out for other races/chapters, but if it uses the HoN system, won't be hard to make our own units.

It never ends well

Does this question even need to be asked these days? Ultramarines are the main customer-facing brand for Space Marines and 40K as a whole, and have been for years and years.

Not only that, it's called Black Reach, which is something they've done before.
