So I have played a couple games against Necrons in 8th. The Necron list has a unit of 5 Sword and Board Lychguard, generally with an Overlord and a Cryptek nearby. These things are freaking invulnerable. 4+ invul save, 2 wounds, reanimation protocols on a 4+... I am at a total loss for how to put them down. I manage to kill and wound 1 or 2 of them, but they get back up before I can make a serious dent in the unit.

Anyone else play against necrons and find some way to bring them down? Mortal wounds can work but you need to drop 10 of them on a turn or you can expect half the models to get back up next turn. It's madness.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Move away from them and focus down everything else. Also, who are you playing and what are you shooting at them? They are WAY less durable than last edition, and quite frankly, not all that good. My tau buddy picked off a couple just from pulse fire.

You should take a look at custodes........

At any rate, I'll admit I haven't played against them yet, but 5x 2-wound guys with a 4+ invlun doesn't sound unbeatable. You could probably do solid damage with something as humble as autocannons (2 damage each), or a solid assault of terminators or nobz or the like. The trick of RP is once the entire squad is dead, they stay dead, and killing 5 guys, even with 2 wounds and a 4+, doesn't sound like a impossible task.

I'm honestly a lot more afraid of 20x warriors with 4+ RP than 5 lychguard.

Best bet for killing them is to snipe the Overlord/Cryptech. As long as they are within 3" (iirc) they must roll and on a 2+ they take the wound that the Character would of taken (assuming they failed their save) These are mortal wounds

Or get them into combat with a decent assault unit, preferably with D2 or better if you can.

Lots of (relatively) inexpensive two-damage attacks. Autocannons, for instance. Guardsmen hanging out near Yarrick need just under 200pts of autocannon teams to one-round them.

(The only time I've actually faced any on the board it was a unit of Shining Spears and their accompanying Autarch that did for them, but same principle.)

Assault them and pile in to the necrotech to kill him, or maybe use a flier and positioning to make him the closest model. They are also one of those prime units to deal mortal wounds to.

Lychguard are incredibly "eh" for their points. Take your example of sword and board lychguard comes to 185 points for 5. They have a 5" move so they are not chasing anyone down and tgey only 2 attacks each so hardly a beat stick. Not scary as they are just a defensive tool. Hell I can get 5 stock wraiths for 5 points more which have better movement, strength, and save.

It's am less worried about having lychguard run me down and what they could do to me personally. It's wound alloacation shennanigans. You don't have to ill 10 wounds on 5 models with a 4++ save. You have to also hurt a chacter they are protecting. Watch the character choose to take a couple hits while the lychguard RP refill their numbers. Watch the lychguard take some hits while the character regans wounds from living metal.

My opponent was smart enough to juggle it back and forth to keep their cryptek standing and I wasn't able to dent any of it in a meaningful way.

Yeah, focus on the lychguard first. By far the worse one to deal with because if you cannot hand out statisticlly 20 wounds on a t5 model (they will save against half) those wounds start regenerating 2 for every 50% dice roll. So kill the cryptek. But now any multi damage attack gets reduced to 1 mortal wound on the lychguard and you have to do even more to bring them down while your own target just heals itself with living metal.
