Hey everyone.
I decided to start Space Marines. Was able to get good deal on Strike Force Ultra and Knight Warden. Picked up Dark Imperium to get rulebook and Primaris marines. Already had Stormraven laying around.
My thoughts on expansion:
Fliers: Got two Stormravens covered, so was thinking of picking picking up two Stormtalons. Not sure if I need Stormhawks if I want to run Whirlwind.
Tanks/Transports: Have one Landraider Crusader/Redeemer (Is another one needed?). Thinking of picking up two Predators, two Razorbacks and one Whirlwind (Would Stormhawk be better than Whirlwind?). Was thinking to get two drop pods.
Heavy: Ten Devastators.
Elites: Have one Ven. Dread. Got two sets of twin autocannons coming from FW. Which second dread to pick up? Ten Sternguard Vets. Conversions for Apothecaries.
Fast: Three Attack Bike squads. Two Attack Bikes. Land Speeder. Ten Assault Marines.
Troops: Three tactical squads and ten sniper scouts.
HQ: Primarch box. Primaris Librarian and Captain. Space Marine Heroes. Convert different versions of Chaplain. Honour Guard. Convert termie Librarian w/shield.
Looking for feedback. Thanks.

IMHO the first thing is to decide what style you want or if there is a particular chapter you like what style do they use.
Marines are pretty much as versatile a force as you're going to get, they have a silly number of available different units from both GW and FW.
So, Chapter?

I am thinking on doing mostly shooty armies. Have some various units for versatility.
As for chapter, I am thinking of rolling vanilla/smurfs.

Smurfs is a good choice if you want to do EVERYTHING
id say just build out a demi company or full company if you want to go ham.
and maybe a full first company.
so 6 tactical ish squads (1 of them being primarus) 2 dev squads (20 models, 5 of which is taken by the hell basters), 2 assault squads ( 20 models, 3 of which are taken by interceptors)
Captain, Ancient, Apothocary, chaplain, company vet x 2

I am not concerned with fluff formations. Wouldnt 6 tacs be too much for <2000 pts games?
Maybe add 2nd primaris half of Dark Imperium.

My company I'm planning on splitting pretty much down the line primaris/ tacticals.
(Characters/ Special Units)
1 x Apothecary
1 x Chaplain
1 x Apothecary
1 x Primaris Captain
2 x Primaris Lieutenant
1 x Company Champion
1 x Primaris Ancient or Standard, haven't decided. I like my Forgeworld DA standard and don't know if I want to snip it to put on a Primaris.
(Tactical & Equivalent)
3 x 5 Intercessors
3 x 10 Tacticals
(Fast Attack)
1 x 10 Assault marines (I play Greenwings. If I want to go bikes/ terms my army is going to look very different.).
1 x 3 Inceptors
(Heavy Support)
1 x 10 Devastators (I like having the guards in the dev squads. How else the new tacticals are going to learn. )
1 x 5 Hellblasters
(Elite)
2 x 5 Veteran Squads
2 x Dreadnoughts (Plan for 2x of the Primaris dreadnought. It's a great looking unit.)
(Scout Contingent)
1 x 10 Scouts (Let's be honest, at least a few are always with a company)
If you go this route it cuts the number of units needed for a full company down by a solid 27, makes you a bit more future proof, and you can do the vast majority by buying 2 Dark Vengeance and 2 Dark Imperium. You could easily paint them up as Vanilla with a little filing on the shoulder symbol. (You aslo get a decent sized Renegade/ Black Legion + Allied Death Guard for the deal if you like or can sell to cut the cost by a solid third to a half.
If you're aiming for a Demi Company and don't mind losing some of the trimmings ,like the extra characters, a box of Dark Imperium + Dark Vengeance alone will get it done.

Oh well for a 2k game no a full company would be a lot (though i wonder how well that would points out
Demi company is easily do able.
3 troops and 2hq is fairly solid base to spring board on.

Hey, in all fairness, the Ultramarines are a very good looking faction with some decent lore and a wide selection of special models.

I'd second a number of the above comments. Particularly about waiting for the codex to drop later this month.
We don't know what's coming in terms of Chapter specific abilities yet but in a few weeks we'll know.
If you want to go shooty as you've pointed out Ultramarines can do that well but it's likely any benefits we get out of the Codex, whether it be Chapter specific stratagems or a doctrine equivalent will be aimed at maintaining a balance to Ultras abilities.
Chapters like Imperial Fists may get shooting specific bonuses so you may want to think about them when the Codex is released.
If you do settle for Ultramarines however (again a totally unbiased opinion) you've got access to certain units, especially characters, which are very economical for their points.
Just be prepared for at least one "poster boy" or "smurf" comment every time you enter your chosen gaming group.
Embrace it, deep down we really enjoy the fact so many people hate us.
Welcome to the marines son.

Definitely waiting for codex. My plan was get bunch of things beginning of August. Now it might be beginning of September.
I love color scheme and versatility of the Ultramarines.
As for comments from people, most of the time choice of answer is between "Your finger painting skills are superb" or "What chapter are those gray marines?"

I would paint them your own colors and play them as all the marine books + chaos if you want to.
I would also magnetize everything so you can change out options.

Speaking of options you could also take a look at the forgeworld chapters they all do diffrent things before but you may need to wait even longer.

I will use Vallejo Game Air Ultramarine so it will be different enough hue.
I magnitized models before. This time around will only do that to large models.

Only FW things I am getting are dual autocannons for dreads and ultramarine transfer sheet. I am sticking to gw things for this army.

You can stick to Gw things for this army.
Forgeworld chapter tactics are just chapter tactics outside of a few chapters like the minators and red scorpions and space sharks that have FW characters and upgrade shoulder pads and bits.

If i may offer a suggestion as someone who has an entire company plus a good chunk of the 1st company painted as ultramarines(who are of course the best chapter)... think about painting them or at least decals in your own chapter.
Once the codexes/codici/whatever start coming out you may find some other chapter has a bent that matches what you want to play better than the ultramarines themselves. Besides, sometimes it's fun to just change things up rather than always using the same special rules. People get weird about using an official chapter that's painted with alternate rules, but don't care if it's your own.

I personally never had issue with people using different chapter rules for different paint schemes. But I know what you mean.
I wanted to do custom chapter with custom decals. Main color would be yellow. Unforunately it is annoying to work with. Also metallic contrast wouldnt be as nice as blue.

Yep as a yellow imperial banana fist marine yellow is a pain and gold and silver doesn't look too good on them.

That is my biggest concern. Unless I can paint more detailed minis blue with yellow parts to fit into color scheme.
