Personally, I would sell out and list tailor to counter guard tanks.
They are everywhere. I might not win against lots of small units, but i'm sick of everyone throwing their Guardtide Wing every game.

Well, guard functions incredibly well at lower point values. Partially because things are undercosted, and also because you have so many cheap options, whereas a lot of anti-tank to other armies is rather pricey.
For example, an Eldar AT choice can easily set you back a good 300-600 points.
- Fire Dragons or Wraithguard
- Wave Serpent
- Farseer or Yvraine
I could see Eldar being bottom tier in a 500 point game. Speed matters basically not at all in a 4'x4' game. There's really nowhere to hide from a 48" range gun. If i was playing against Eldar, and it was 500 points on a 4'x4', i'd park an Imperial Knight in the center of the map and laugh. Well, if i had a Knight.
If I were playing Eldar in a 500pt game...yeah. My ability to play against a pretty significant percentage of lists hinges 100% on the Warp Hunter existing, without it I don't know that I'd try.
(That or set up the Heavy Support detachment with three cheap Wraithlords and a Wraithseer. Shuriken cannons and flamers to threaten infantry, melee weapons to beat up hard targets, and then just sort of wander across the map hoping that they can't beat through forty T7/3+ wounds.)

That's not actually a terrible idea.
It wasn't just IG I saw loading 500 point lists with tanks, so I think a lot of people had the same idea. While you'd be leaving yourself weak to the green tide, 'gaunt rush, or conscript blob, I only saw a little of the latter and a lot of tankhammer that day, and I'm still seeing a whole lot of tanks out there on the board. With a heavy dedication to tank killing, you're still capable to processing the little bit of infantry that was riding in the razorback or was supporting the Leman Russes.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades! |

Play some 350-500 point games with a squad plus character. Really rewarding, really quick, and VERY strategic.

My FLAGS does 650 point games every Tuesday night. We DO have a few special rules, though, like no Monoliths, no Landraiders, No Russ tanks, no Monstrous Creatures. That sort of thing. Really tones down the cheese factor.
It makes for quick, fun games, and you can usually get two games in before the store closes.

I find infantry games rather, well, uninteresting, and in the end, tedious. Dealing with more than 100+ infantrymen on a 4x4 board rapidly becomes a chore.
Tankhammer is fast and fun to play, on the other hand.

Necrons OP at low points. Its very difficult to wipe out a squad in 1 turn so their RP build becomes crazy good.

Agreed, Reanimation Protocol working every turn until the entire squad is wiped out is OP as hell, especially in low-point games.
I played a 3-player 500-pt game (Daemons, Eldar, Necrons) and the Necron were savage. My friend used Illuminor Szeras's Master Technomancer ability to improve RP to 4+ and Mechanical Augmentation to buff his warriors to T5 or BS 2+. Add to that the fact warriors are Leadership 10, meaning they almost never lost models to Morale checks compared to the other 2 armies. Necron warriors murdered Daemontees and Striking Scorpions in close combat with the Szeras buffs and lack of morale failures. TL;DR, Necron are OP in 500 pt matches.
Morale is by far the worst thing in the new 8th edition, especially since there are no longer 'fearless' units. Daemons are basically getting shredded big time now (at 5+ invulnerable saves and Ld. 7, you're losing way too many models from shooting phases). Based on my experience, you can expect to lose half of your army to morale, especially in low point games. Wouldn't recommend playing 8th unless it's 1500 points minimum.

Played a few 30 PL games on a 4x4 with no transport, no "OP units" (such as wulfen, very subjective view....).
It was great fun, short games and a good way to handle the new rules. I would say that the board should be densely populated with terrain elements.

Small games using the old '40k in 40 minutes' rules is great, you can find them in one of the old white dwarfs.
I think 40k has always worked best at lower points values, anything over 1500 points is just incredibly long and tedious!

Not exactly a small battle, but we will be having a battle on Thursday with 4 or 6 armies of 500 points each (multiple players on each side with an army each). Picking the armies was fine - we are not going for power builds, and because of the flexibility of detachment types you even have options to try out interesting stuff at the low point limit (we are using all patrol detachments)
Mark.

My group has done exclusively 750pt games so far and all of the games have been incredibly close. We have SM, CSM, IG, AM, ork, DE and Tau players and don't think we have had a single blow out game. It's a friendly group though and nobody is list tailoring I'm sure if someone wanted to they could easily break the game at low pionts. But my consensus is that 750 works fine and makes for fast fun games. We will be making our first jump to 1000 in the next couple weeks.

500 point games end very quickly. That's my main observation. Did not enjoy the 2 I played as much as larger games.
