A former sailor in the US Navy stabbed a woman 119 times when she revealed she was transgender after they had sex, a court heard.
Dwanya Hickerson, 21, "lost it" after learning Dee Whigham, 25, had been born a man.
Mississippi's Jacksonville Circuit Court heard that he knifed Ms Whigham multiple times in the face and slashed her throat in a hotel room before showering and leaving her for dead.
The pair had been chatting online for two months after making contact through a dating site.
They decided to meet for the first time when Ms Whigham was visiting the city of Biloxi, where Hickerson lived, on July 23 last year.
The hospital nurse picked him up at the gates of Keesler Air Force Base, where he was training to be a weather forecaster, and drove them to her hotel, the court heard.
CCTV footage showed them walking into her room together at Best Western at about 8.30pm. Hickerson was seen leaving 23 minutes later with his shirt around his neck.
Ms Whigham's body was found at about 9.45pm by her friends.
An Air Force instructor later recognised Hickerson in a police appeal over the killing and reported him to detectives, according to the WLOX news channel.
Hickerson later told police he and Ms Whigham had sex at the hotel before she told him she was transgender.
"I lost it, I lost it," he said, adding he did not remember much afterwards.
He was jailed for 40 years without parole after pleading guilty to second-degree murder. He will also have to serve 15 years for a robbery charge after taking Whigham's purse and mobile phone.
Hickerson could have faced the death penalty if he had been convicted of capital murder.
Ms Whigham's mother, Vickie Blackney Whigham, criticised Hickerson's sentence.
"I think the plea is a slap in the face," she said. "He gets a chance to see his family and I don't have that chance with my child."

He pretty much still got a death sentence. 40 years without parole, and another 15 after that, means he's in there until he's in his 70s. Assuming the 15 for robbery is consecutive and not concurrent.

This guy obviously went berserk, stabbing someone 119 times is insane, and robbing them afterwards makes the motive seem a bit suspect.
I think transgender people should be up front about it before starting a sexual relationship. It would matter to most people, I don't think many people would actually be cool with it, especially if they felt misled about it prior to having sex. Waiting until after you've slept together to raise this issue if you have had a sex change seems likely to create a hostile situation.

The guy obviously liked and was attracted to the victim when he thought she was a cis woman. The difference when he found out after that she was a transwoman is all in his head.
I'm thankful that "trans panic" did not provide a defense and this guy is going away effectively for the rest of his life. It's been a successful defense in the past.

The biological differences aren't all 'in his head'. This argument only stands up if you base everything about attraction entirely upon physical appearance, tell me where do you draw the line on what lies or ommissions of the truth are acceptable when getting someone into bed?

He was attracted to her personality, looks, etc. when he thought she was a cis woman. The only thing that changed was his perception of her gender.
A person's past is their business, really. What if your wife was an escort before you met her? Is that any of your business?

I think it is actually. Turn it around, if it's no issue then why keep it secret? You're supposed to be open with your partner not hide things about yourself to create a false image.
When I met my current girlfriend, I was getting divorced. As far as I was concerned, it was over, I didn't feel married and shortly I wasn't to be, and had little to no contact with my ex. Yet I think my new girlfriend deserved to be aware of those circumstance before we entered a relationship, despite it having no real effect upon us.
Also, I think being a man in your past is more than just 'your business' when meeting a partner, some things in your past have implications on the future. Secrets that size have a habit of coming out. Better to be open about it so everyone knows where they stand.

So, if I talk with a woman and after having sex she tells me that he isn't naturally blonde, but in fact he has black air, so I just kill her... she has at least something to blame, because she should have been honest about her past?
Look, I can understand feeling "cheated" about something like this. But to put it in light of a crime so horrible is just absurd. Theres literally 0 excuses for what he did. And having sex with something without telling him your real sex isn't a crime.

The guy was in the wrong. Absolutely. Stabbing someone for that is absolutely heinous.
All the same, I have to ask - why did the victim not mention their gender? Yes, it's still no reason to stab someone over, and not an excuse at all, but all the same, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect something like that to be told before a relationship.
All the same, a sickening loss of life.

Theres people that get drunk and has sex with people of their own gender. And nobody dies for doing that.
If you are a trasgender, and you go throug surgery, basically you want to be treated as the gender you feel you are. So basically, sufering years of hormones, surgeries, etc... to tell everybody "I was a boy/girl before" is a little... incongruous.
"In my early years I was from the Latin Kings/Anarco/Hitlerian youths". If you leave that behind, are you supposed to tell everybody? Of course if you are in a relationship is expected for you to be honest. But this "We need to know everything of eachother" is really unreasonable. People has a right to their intimancy, even in a relationship, even being married.

Yes, actually. If I'm going to make a vow to spend the rest of my life loving, supporting, and defending my spouse, I do have a right to know about anything that could flare up as an issue in the future. Just like my wife has a right to know about my past.

Noone here is saying the guy was right. He's a monster and should rot in jail. 40 years is too little for what he did, in my opinion. But she should have said something over the two months they spent talking, instead of waiting until after the fact.

Actually no, you don't have a right to know all of the secrets and past life of your partner. Of course is something that you can expect and in many cases honesty is a virtue, but theres no obligation for that to have a sane relationship, actually.

I didn't say all secrets. but anything major, such as jobs that could cause complications for us (she was an escort, and turns out I find out she worked a few co workers before we met, putting me in a very awkward position at the company party), I do feel I have a right to know. As I said of course this is about your standards, theres no law about all of this. You are in your right to put standards to your partner. They are in their right to not meet them, and normally thats the end of a relationship.

I didn't give it as an excuse, they guy stabbed someone 119 times, and stole their possessions. It doesn't mitigate the crime, but I did say that revealing something like that after just having sex, having been communicating for two months prior, is likely to be inflammatory. More so than revealing you dye your hair, those two things aren't comparable so why try?
There isn't much to talk about the man's guilt, we're all agreed on that. But generally the case invites discussion on whether trans people should be open about their past prior to having sex. I happen to think it is important to be open about it, it's a pretty big part of your past and identity, most people would want to know their partner underwent a sex change. Some people are more accepting of it than others. I've no issue saying I wouldn't be comfortable with it and they'd be better finding someone who was. But I wouldn't be 'stab them 120 times' uncomfortable, because I'm not a nutter.

Crime is downright brutal. And he deserves a very long time in the concrete can.
However.
The fact it was disclosed after engaging in a sexual relationship.
That's a problem. Something like that is kind of a need to know before that stage is reached in my opinion.
Walking away and calling out someone for hiding a rather big issues and hiding a potential deal breaker.
Not killing them. Sure call em a lying expletives, just NOT killing people.

Remember, even after transition you still must announce it at all times. You can never live in the present.
The amount of victim blaming here is absurd, especially since people are so at pains to try and hide it.

But once you reach point a full sexual relationship. That's more of a required time when its needed to be disclosed.

The fear is real for some.
We will probably never know why the victim never told her assailant about that aspect of her past before intercourse.

Yes, you as a transgender person might want that. Other people in the world might not want to have sex with someone who is trans. I personally disagree with that, but that's a preference for other people. Is it ever okay to stab someone for that? God no, but can you not understand that someone might have their own preferences as to who they're sleeping with?
If someone doesn't want to have sex with a transgender person, or a bisexual, or another man or woman, or literally anyone - they should always have the right to say no, regardless if that makes them a dick or not.
Everything is a little extreme, although there's nothing wrong with that. However, for something related to sex, and what should rightfully be an important part of their life, not revealing that information prior is... well, it's not something I'd ever advocate.
There's intimacy, but then there's "what might affect/change the mind of the person I'm sleeping with" to consider. If I'm a carrier of a sexually transmitted disease, am I permitted to withhold that, as my right to intimacy? If there's something about me which the person sleeping with me should know, and might be important for them to know, because they might withdraw consent if they knew, then I'd expect someone to mention it.
Again, I'm not making excuses for stabbing someone. Just because someone wasn't the gender they made out to be does not, and should never, justify stabbing and killing someone over 100 times. I'd hope the man gets far more time for this, but I'm not the judge.

The amount of victim blaming here is absurd, especially since people are so at pains to try and hide it.
Not hey.. I'm ... I'm trans, I was ...
But once you reach point a full sexual relationship. That's more of a required time when its needed to be disclosed.
'Disclosure'
Its almost something that is trifling

If I'm having sex with someone who doesn't know what they're getting into, I think it's more than fair to have a right to know.
Does that give them a right to stab you? No. No-one is suggesting that.

No-one is saying that the victim is the worst person here.

The fear is real for some.
We will probably never know why the victim never told her assailant about that aspect of her past before intercourse.
For all we know, maybe she thought she did, or actually did, tell him at some point early on. We only have his side of the story, after all.
