I've had that mindset as well since I started playing in late third.
Then 8th Ed. arrived and my view of Super Heavies (or Titanics/Lord of War) changed entirely.
Superheavies are mostly fine in 8th Ed, since everything (i.e. every list) can theoretically kill them,
and because they get hurt and degrade just like regular vehicles, except of course that they have a larger health pool (but also cost substantially more.)
One of my
IG Superheavies is the Macharius Heavy Tank.
It's a "light" Super Heavy, which costs slightly more two fully kitted out
LRBT's, is easier to kill (22
HP vs 12+12
HP), and shoots about as good as two
LRBT's. If my opponent called it cheezy I would throw a shoe at him.
Baneblades are heavier and 'tankier' than a Macharius, but they also cost *alot* more. I think my Stormlord costs ~650 pts. 650 pts of Leman Russes is way harder to kill than a Baneblade-chassi.
Once you get stuck into close combat youre hooped.
That's why you bring Eversor Assassins to stab the enemy in the throat, or Bullgryns who smash them in the face, or Rough Riders/Death Riders who pierce them like kebab.
I've never understood the dread many
IG-players have towards close combat, but then I've always fielded close-combat elements of my own when I play
IG.
