So I've got plenty of genestealers in my plastic pile of shame. I'm thinking of painting them up to use in friendly games. Would the start collecting set for tyranids be a good entry point with the genestealers?

Army would be:

HQ
Brood Lord, 162 points
Hive Tyrant, 185 points

Troops
Genestealers x 20, 240 points
Genestealers x 20, 240 points
Tyranid Warriors x 3, 72 points

Fast Attack:
Gargoyles x 10, 60 points

Good enough for friendly semi-competitive gaming?

Looks like a very solid start.

Not a flying hive tyrant?

What do you plan on running with that tyrant?

Otherwise looks good. Genestealers are awesome. Make sure to cast catalyst on them and be sure to keep your broodlord stuck in the middle of them, but with the ability to hop out and around and charge something juicy

I had thought about just having him run forward with the warriors, I don't really know what he's good for, should I focus on his CC ability or his shooting? He's got 10 wounds so anyone can shoot him, which was my concern about his utility. I've only been playing guard or marines so far this edition, and neither of my armies has a lot of mobility.

The tyrant is very versatile, you can focus on both mellee and shooting I would not recomend just shooting, I learned that the hard way. Rending claws are ace until a new codex comes out. For gun it is your choise. BS3+ is very rare for nids. Strangelthorn, heavy venom or dakka guns are all good on him.

As you scale up your models try to get some tyrant guards, you are essentially buying more wounds.

The most efficient hive tyrant build right now is wings, 2 deathspitters and rending claws. It's cheap, has decent ranged shooting, is fast, good psychic powers and decent in melee. It might die quickly but that's why you keep it cheap. 5++ save will at least make him annoying to kill by shrugging off the occasional Las cannon.
