Hey guys I recently picked up the Marines from the Dark Imperium set, and I've decided to paint them up as Red Scorpions!

Primaris Sjt Maximus

So this my first attempt, I'm quite happy with how he turned out. I really enjoyed doing the helmet!

Tips for posting pics:

Always take the picture with your phone vertical, or your camera in its "normal" resting position. This will keep your picture the correct way up when uploading.

Upload to Dakka Gallery, then use the tabs at the right hand side to post. ALWAYS select "Medium" for size as this is the most appropriate

Sorry to be snide, I just can't see your image because its so rediculously huge on my screen.

Lookin' good. Paint looks a little bit thick, and I'd like to see some brass studs on those pouches, but I love the Red Scorpion colour scheme, so I'd like to see where you go with this!

Ah that's not snide at all, I'll make sure to re-upload it as it's bugging the hell out of me too!

Thanks for that! I can see it better now, and I really like the tone of grey you've gone with!

I'm just going to echo what the other guys have said and mention paint thickness, thinning your paints, etc. Standard stuff really but you have neat and tidy lines and a good eye for colour!

Another tip I'll give you for painting black and grey, is start from a white basecoat or spray undercoat. You can use black wash heavily on the shoulders to dark them, then a super thin coat of black paint. A thin coat of black wash over white is also a good starting point for grey and you can then layer the panels in your chosen shade to give more depth to the model. This will also help with the yellow shoulder trim, as you'll need less layers of paint to reach the desired solidity.

You've got a good basis here and I think you should keep at it! Good job pal!

Uploaded some more pictures! My iphone camera is making the model look really grainy which is kinda annoying! Ah I will try and thin the coats for the current model I'm painting, any tips on making the paint thinner?

Just add a few drops of water to the paint on your pallette before application. I generally eyeball it myself but others have specific points and levels of consistancy. My personal rule of thumb is that Base Paints don't need to be too thin, just add a couple drops to loosen it up. For layers and highlights, paint a few lines on your hand. The paint should be thin enough to JUST colour your skin and NOT have an obvious "layer" of paint on your skin. Of course, this might be a bit difficult if you have a dark skin tone, I'm very pale skinned so its easier to see.

Using appropriate types of paint will also help. Base paints from GW, or equivilent from other producers under various titles, are very helpful as they have better consistancy, so use those first, then slowly layer up over those in progressively brighter colours.

Better brushes will also help. I will swear by Windsor Newton Series 7. I've been painting for almost 10 years but buying a Series 7 was an absolute gamechanger. I was a major skeptic, but I honestly cannot emphasise enough how much it matters to have good brushes. Get some brush cleaner as well as it will keep your brushes in good order.

As for picture taking... what phone do you have? Enough phones can take pretty decent pictures these days. Try a plain white or black background and some bright white light from behind the camera. Don't use the flash or a Flashlight app on your phone as it will over saturate the mini. If you're phone has a "Pro" mode or something similar, play around with that as much as possible for focus and shutter speed. Don't touch white balance if you don't know what you are doing as this can alter the final look of your paint on the image.

Okay I tried to make this one look a little cleaner, this is just a basic marine :3

I've got a few GW brushes but they've seen better days! As for my phone it's a Iphone 7 so it should have a good camera but it seems to be blurry when I'm taking pictures of models, I guess it struggles to focus on them?

I can see that this one's paint is a bit thinner. Well done. Hit the metallics with a wash and base him and you are good to go.

I really like the color scheme, keep at it!

Looking good!
A piece of plain, white paper behind the model can help with fuzziness, camera doesn't try to pick out details in the background. Plus, it showcases your model.

So I winged it on the color of the lieutenant's helmet, and I think he should stand out nicely on the battlefield! His helmet could've been a little cleaner but yellow is a pain to do, glad I didn't go for Imperial Fists. Now I'm just sitting looking at the Primaris ancient...That flag is going to be so hard to do! I might even have to try and free hand a scorpion on it, wish me luck!

Thanks a lot! I had my first game in store with some of them painted up yesterday, people thought they were space wolves :(

They're grey space marines...people will always assume at first glance they're space wolfies. If you had red painted space marines I'd glance and say "huh, blood angels?".

Yes, because most people these days care little about fluff or paintjobs when it comes to the game. Blue Marines are Ultramarines/Vanilla. Green Marines are Salamanders or Dark Angels. Black Marines are Raven Guard or Deathwatch. Yellow Marines are Imperial Fists. White Marines are White Scars. Red Marines are Blood Angels. Silver Marines are Grey Knights. And grey or ice blue marines are Space Wolves. That's just how it is.

Side question, How are the red scorpions faring these days? Anything good from FW?

They seem to be doing good! We haven't got any fluff on if they've accepted Primaris yet! Fingers crossed though. They've also updated their named characters rules for 8e

Along with thinning your paints, it's worth keeping in mind that blowing models up to 20 times their original size generally doesn't do them any favours unless you're a pretty spectacular painter, as it highlights flaws that aren't as noticeable in the 'flesh'. Taking your pics from a little further back will get you some better results.

Not yet, I've been using either the Ultramarines ones or the Salamanders tactics.
