Im looking to paint alot of 40k terrain and want to base everything in Stormvermin Fur, but $20 for a can seems painful. Has anyone used an alternative colored primer? Doesnt need to be 100% the same color but anything other than black or white.

Army Painter is good, but not a whole lot cheaper at around $13-15 a can.
If you're painting terrain - skip all that nonsense and go get some Krylon.

Get a cheap airbrush and compressor. You can get airbrush primer for MUCH cheaper than rattle can and once you do it, you'll never look back.

How much terrain.
it might be worth it just for the sake of not having to experement with 3-4 companies and possibly not getting exactly what you want.

It's very difficult to get primers that aren't black white or grey.
GW spray paints are not primers.
Army Painter spray paints are primers but they do not shrink like a good primer making an overly thick application all to easy.
I'd be tempted to go with grey primer and a brown wash to get the base colour.

Have you considered car primers? They usually have more choices besides black and white.
I use a grey one from Motip here in Europe. Works perfectly and doesn't stay thick at all, I can prime a figure in one go (and I spray it on generously).

Again, GW sprays are Not primers. Just paint.
I personally love Army Painter spray primer. Not cheap, but it's really pretty good imho.

This man knows of what he speaks. Auto-primers are grand and generally reasonably priced.

Krylon Ultraflat primer is great stuff-- IMHO the best for the price and pretty easy to find at hardware stores and the like.
