So it's widely understood that 3+/5++ means a 3+ armour save and a 5+ invulnerable save.

With Weapon Skill and Ballistic Skill no longer being based on an unnecessary sum, might we have opportunity for a little shorthand here?

For instance, Khârn effectively has WS 2++. Overwatch is at 6++.

Seems like a useful turn of phrase that will immediately bring people up to speed when they think Prescience, or using both barrels on a combi-weapon, affects accuracy when shooting at chargers.

What is the difference between WS 2+ and 2++?

WS2+ can be effected by modifiers that adjust what you hit on, I believe. There aren't many modifiers in melee except self-inflicted ones like Power Fists, but they are out there.

Ok, but unmodifiable hit characteristics aren't particularly numerous and don't actually denote a different class of thing like with armour and invulnerable saves. not to mention they aren't actually unmodifiable, it's just that the modifiers don't change whether you hit or not. Overcharged plasma on overwatch with a -1 is still going to cook on a 2.

At a guess 2+ is hits on 2s, 2++ is hits on twos reroll misses. Personally that seems obtuse for the sake of being similar to the armor saves, I'd probably go with

3+ Hits on threes
3R1 hits on threes reroll ones or could be 3++
3RM hits on threes reroll misses or could be 3+++

Constantly being negative doesn't make you seem erudite, it just makes you look like a curmudgeon.
