So having started back up in 40k for 8th edition I am looking for a good list builder. I used to use Army builder awhile back when i used to game. They were pretty decent with file updates and such.

So my question is what list builders are people using and what is the associated cost with them? I might as well mention I am using a Windows based computer as it might effect the options available.

Thank you for any help in advance.

BattleScribe. It's free, usually accurate and doesn't have stupid self imposed restrictions like Army Builder did. It's got a github to report errors and they are fixed quickly. The people running the Github are donkey-caves though so bear that in mind if you decide to help them.

They have a mobile app but a lot of features are locked behind a paywall which is extremely gakky IMHO. Atm there is no reasonable alternative to it and pen-and-paper is a pain due to the format of the codexes. So, yeah, unless you want to make a custom excel sheet, BattleScribe is the way to go.

100% agree. I've used Army Builder and Battlescribe extensively. Army Builder was first one I had used, then tried Battlescribe...for me personally, Battlescribe is way better, cleaner...and it really seems to be the majority of what people are using for digital list building.

I, as a paying app user also (use it on my iphone and ipad in addition to PC), would highly recommend Battlescribe.

Battlescribe I downloaded it and tried it worked great for a week then they came out with an update and then you couldn't modify any selections or change out wargear at all so I stopped using it.

Is there something I missed?

Yes, you probably did something wrong, or the update broke your saved rosters (but that realistically shouldn't happen). Sounds to me an error on your part rather than the programs.

Battlescribe all day.

Easy to understand, free (or really cheap if you want to pay), accurate, and updated fast.

The only way I build lists.

Isn't there supposed to be an official list builder coming out? I've been using Battlescribe though for as long as I can remember.

Even if there was (no news about it, probably squatted) it will be gimped by design due to lawyer fethery. Make a better product? Hope you hired a lawyer to sanitise the gak out of it or go full CleanRoom 2: Electric Boogaloo, because otherwise GW will crack down on you harder than Mecha AdolfStalinErdoğan. Battlescribe will ALWAYS be better than anything GW produces, simply due to the fact it's not made by GW.

Another vote for battlescribe. It isnt very intuitive, but once I got it all figured out I liked it much better than army builder.

I don't know if it's what you're referring to, but sometimes an update will effectively make your previous lists read-only (I assume this happens when the files change too much or something). However, you should be able to look at them and then recreate them in a new list.

Regardless, I'd highly recommend Battlescribe.

GW made an official list builder years ago. It was bad and the product support was worse.

They got me once. Never again.

Call me old school, but I just prefer using a regular composition book for each edition, and write my army lists that way. You can't beat $1 for a 100 pages of Army lists for your chosen faction.

I'd say free for seemingly infinite lists beats it (BattleScribe) but I do enjoy pencil and paper to an extent myself.

I use to use Battlescribe as a quick way to build lists on the fly, or when bored. Stopped using them when they reformated behind a paywall. The current version doesn't seem to have a complete database of factions and units available.

There is no pay wall. Its free. The only thing you get for paying is custom names, and other bells and whistles.

I also have not seen one missing faction or unit. Which ones are missing? Or as you assuming?

It was free until they changed the format and went subscription. They are free again, now. Probably from the pushback.

Grey Knights are missing from their database, which is currently up to date on my Battlescribe.

It was never not free. That never changed.
The change was from "buy" to "subscribe".

Grey Knights are up as well and have been for a while. 19th of June, even.

Please don't spread untrue rumours (or switch to an actual repository that works. There are several, but the main repro is pretty good).

What are Grey Knights listed under? I guess I'm not smart enough to decode the options.

Grey Knights are called just that. Are you per any chance using the other repo for mobile?

I just downloaded what Battle Scribe told me to download.8th mobile v34. I'm not using a mobile device but Grey Knights aren't showing up as an option. It does show updates from Aug so according to the people above this post it should be there.

Subscriptions are paywalls, a wall take block you unless you pay. If you purchased the pro-edition like did only to having that invalidated by a subscription service, you'd be a little salty too.

And there was never anything to block you from using it....for free. Again BS is and has always been free. If you want the extra features (which are ok, but nothing necessary) you can pay a stupidly low price.

As far as the change from V1 to V2, for paid people sure, be a little salty, but at least be correct on your facts.

Use the 8th ed regular data, not the mobile one.

Every faction/unit is in there.

8th is a single guy reoptimizing the data for mobile use.
He's far behind and hard at work to get it all up, but its a BIG task.

Try just the one that says "warhammer 40k".
That's the regular one.

No, they are not. You are not blocked from using the app or anything. You see some small banner ads, cannot save and rename your units but that is about it.
Otherwise it is fully functional.
Also, if you purchased a desktop licence, you can redeem that one for a life-ling subscription.

As a BS Data author, do you really think I do not own a BS Pro?
