I appreciate all of the comments, but can we please not get too wrapped up in the DKoK and what exactly they're exactly based on? 40k is a very fictitious universe, and I really don't think it matters who's based on what.

We cannot discuss what inspired a given aesthetic.. because reasons...

My reasoning is that going back and forth about one group's aesthetic doesn't really contribute much to a thread about which army you like over another. If someone were to say "I like the DKoK because they look like WW1 Germans", I'd be fine with it. But, constant posts going back and forth about how and why DKoK look how they look doesn't really fit with this thread in my opinion.

I like all 3 of them, however, I think that Steel Legion and DKoK do have rather generic looks to them.

To be clear, I do like their looks and being generic isn't necessarily bad for massed-infantry. However, I just don't think either of them really stands out.

On the other hand, Vostroyas have a unique look that really makes them stand out - not just among the IG factions but against Sci-fi armies in general. They have this semi-steampunk look but combined with hats reminiscent of Russia and then these very bright and elaborate coats. In terms of colour and decoration, their coats almost resemble something from the Napoleonic war (albeit as longcoats).

I think Vostroyas just have a really great and unique aesthetic.

Vostroyas Firstborn are the best and more proper 40k Imperial Guard regiment of all 40k.

The rest are either very movie/fantasy rip-off (Catachans with Rambo, Cadians with Starship Troopers), or too much Historical reality rip off (Krieg, Steel Legion, Mordians, Tallarn,, etc...) (This doesn't mean I don't like those other regiments too. Krieg, Stell Legion and Tallarn are beautifull)

But Vostroyan Firstborns? They are the PERFECT mix between a historical army fusioned with proper 40k grimdark aesthetics.

I would really love for these guys to get plastic models and an expanded range.

I love everying about Vostroyan but the hats
And that image is one of my favorite 40k art ever.
Nice lore too.

Sadly i dont like mustaches and fur hats too much. Even though i like the rest.

If i had to pick one to collect i would have to go with steel legion.

This is why I'd like to see an expanded range with more heads and such. Might not save you from the hats but you might at least be able to avoid moustaches.

On the other hand, you could learn to love moustaches:

The Vostroyans definitely fit best to the setting and as they are afaik the newest regiment bar the Tempestus their aesthetic is just more refined than the older ones.

But for me it's still the Steel Legion. Their look just works especially combined with their theme of mechanized infantry which they just defined for the whole Guard. Yeah everyone may use APCs but in the Legion just every squad has one and uses it the whole time. The picture of dozens of Chimeras crushing in the wave of Orks and assault squads storming out and blasting and flaming them to smithereens, is just so awesome and appealing.

Playing mostly Necromunda and Battletech, Malifaux is awesome too!

Rogue Trader Arcadians are my #1, I'd love an update for them.
2nd edition metal Cadians are my #2
Tallarn at #3.

Of the options above, Firstborn are my pick. Death Korps are too samey, Steel Legion too, too Nazi.

It also depends on what you want your regiment to be. Part of the problem is we guard players are so used to being ignored that we're like 'what if we got one other model range...' while Marines have 2-5 and growing.

I just finished reading Guy Haley's superheavy novels (there are 2 novels and 2 novellas) and the staggering array of regiments is just ridiculous. There's the Savlar Chem Dogs, who you could do with Steel Legion, and then there's the Borosovians who are essentially a stone-age tribe given lasguns and sent to fight. And the Paragonians, elite heavy infantry in carapace armour, and the Atraxians who are very martial but not very well equipped.

Right there are like 4 potential model lines, all of them are super badass and super 40k for their own reasons (Chem-addled convict hordes conscripted to the front? Ancient and savage culture conscripted irregardless of creed and thrown to the grinder? Medieval nobles with the finest weapons and armour of the era? Spartan-style 'trained from birth' egalitarian militarists with equipment that doesn't match their philosophy because the Departmento Munitorum is dumb?).

There's just so much potential.

DKoK.

I like the heavy stubber model.

If Khorne needs blood, will drown him in his own blood!
If Slaanesh wants pleasure, then we´ll give him DEATH, the greatest pleasure known to man!
If Tzeentch asks for forbidden knowledge, then we will enlighten him with fear of The God Machine!
If Nurgle wants us to embrace rebirth, then to hell with that, the Guard embrace Death, we live to DIE!

It's hard for me, I'd probably say Death Korps of Krieg for the background, especially after reading Dead Men Walking (they get Commissars so they DON'T waste lives). Though aesthetically speaking they're pretty close with Steel Legion. Vostroyans are definitely an iconic 40K regiment, but like others have said, I'd prefer if they had more helmeted options rather than mustached faces.
