Not the most inspiring of project titles, but once I've gotten a bit more of my project done I may have a better idea about what I want it to be, and then name it!

I've got a few plans for this army, a couple of conversion ideas and some normal units to paint up. For now, I'm mostly trying to find a paint scheme I like.

And so, doing the most unhelpful thing possible, I decided to start off with a big model - a Maulerfiend.

In white.

With red flesh and copper trim.

Appreciate any feedback on this work in progress, as well as suggestions on improvements on the scheme for all the upcoming models!

Model is obviously still a work in progress, I haven't yet finished all the trim and haven't done any highlighting yet either... not sure the best things to do to give the beast the best boost! It's also not assembled, and is only held together by blue-tak in the pics

Yay a plog. Good work, now I don't need to chase you around all your other p&m threads

I'm watching. At this stage I wouldn't even bother with shade and highlighting. Just get your base colours and themes down, a consistent basing method and plug away at a squad or two. You can always go back and touch them up later (oh er/phrasing etc.).

I really like the colour choice though. White and copper works well together although I'm not sure if this will suit the model range you are using without heavy weathering (aren't these meant to be ancient nasties? I'm not sure - my warhammer chaos lore was arrested in the early 90's! ). I suppose though it would make sense if these beasts were freshly manufactured from some dark secret forge. Or someting.

Anyway looking good and you know where I am if you fancy a game sometime.

Looking good. The white is an interesting choice and think, as MLCS said, you'd want to weather that back a lot, that isn't hard and could look really nice. Look forward to seeing it develop.

Yeh I do plan on doing weathering, I have a ... Tamiya? weathering set that I am yet to use. I want to finish all the basic colours and then varnish it first, so it's then (supposedly) easier to clean up any mistakes I make when washing and weathering. I don't want to make them too "chaos-ey" and dirty though. Not until I've finalised my own Lore for them.

Yeh I need to get a bit of weathering on there for sure, but I haven't even opened my weatehring set yet so I need to practise on something less annoying to repaint if I mess it up haha. Also need to watch some more guides on it but it does seem pretty straightforward.

I've never bothered with the powders, I might eventually. You can do a lot with few washes and drybrushing.

My history with drybrushing is that I've usually found either not enough going on the model, or way too much. Need to practise getting the right amount of paint on the brush!

Try a tiny bit of foam, it can give a really nice stippling effect which looks great for mud, rust or chipping etc. Experiment till you get the right paint load for the desired effect.

The weathering set comes with a brush that is a foam head, instead of bristles. I have got a few spares coming in the post too hopefully. Never tried foam before, but it does seem like the recommended option!

I did consider changing the white to more of a "bone" colour, as it could still be kept relatively clean while still looking chaos-ey. Problem I had when I used the vallejo "Bone White" is that it came off a little pinky rather than brown. I did consider trying to do a wash to brown the white to more of an old bone colour, but washes pool on white and leave marks that dont seem to quite work.

Not sure where I would find a better way to turn the white into bone, when a paint called "bone white" doesn't do the trick lol

Automatically Appended Next Post:
EDIT:

So I decided to give the bone look another go, and this time actually give the piece the proper edging etc so that I would see how it looked as a finished piece instead of just the off-white colour with a white border. Thin coat of bonewhite, a thing umber wash, then another thin bonewhite, and it ended up like this -

Have to say, it ended up growing on me more than I thought it would. Properly in place it does look more brown than pink, though it could probably use another brown wash (or maybe a drybrush... not sure yet).

I've been doing some work now and then on this army over the last few months, but I haven't posted any updates in a long time. I will post the maulerfiend in the next couple of days, but for now a small pic of something I'm working on and is almost ready for assembly...

Finally some photos of my Maulerfiend, though I still need to do some weathering and also paint/glue the lasher tendrils.

Thankyou! Still not sure on the colour scheme. Considering changing the bone-white panels to black instead. Or red. But then black and red are both super common for Chaos, and common isn't very interesting!

My next work in progress:

A little unsure on the weapon, as it's a bit oversized for him...

I wish I had the money to model a Contemptor booting Guilliman in the jaffas..

I like the black and red and your Maulerfiend is excellent.

Nothing can save the Guilliman model though. Except a toe to the minerals.

Couple more photos with the arms and wings magnetised, and the shoulderpad in place. The wings would be more stable if I glue them (as would the arms) but for now until I know how I'm likely to field it in the long term I'll leave them magnetised.

Here we go, only phone snaps for the moment because I need to figure out how to set up my DSLR to actually take decent model shots, but the model is now 95% finished I think. I'll check for any more touch ups needed, and then will be varnishing it.

One thing I need to work on is the blade of the axe... not sure how to do it really.

Edit: Also, the head isn’t glued, as I may end up changing it to something else... haven’t found anything suitable yet though.
